Have you ever bought a game you knew nothing about and upon playing it found it to be AWESOME?

In my random gaming experience it was Guilty Gear X2 which I initially only brought because liked the anime look shown on the box but BOY does this game have more to it then that. Its one of the most underrated fighting games of all time and to repeat the topic title found it to be AWESOME. I played it so much I was muttering HEAVEN OR HELL!!! in my sleep. I only wish Arc System Works will finally start working on Guilty Gear X3 instead of another X2 update. Some people say that Blazblue (another underrated gem) is its spiritual successor but Daisuke Ishiwatari himself said Blazblue is not meant to replace Guilty Gear. Guilty Gear fans will know what I talking about.

Deadly Premonition
All I knew about it was that it was bad, but freakin sweet.
So i played it, and while the game itself is horrible there is jsut something charming that comes from the characters.

I got KotOR on the Steam Summer Camp sale about a week ago because it was really cheap and I'd heard a lot of people talking about it, but I didn't know anything else about it. Now it's one of my favorite games, despite the old graphics, because it actually presents a reasonable argument for being evil.

Syberia, Psychonauts, Oblivion and Fallout 3 were all purchased by my dad, who didn't anything about them except that they were supposed to be good. Boy, was he right.

Beyond Good & Evil.

I was at some big-ass store with my mom when I was 16, I think, or whatever age I was when BG&E was released. I was feeling really down because of incidents in school (School for me was....troublesome. Not the actual classes, but everything else.), and I walked by the game shelves. I didn't intend to look at any games, as I had no real reason to buy one. It wasn't any special occasion, nor did I have any money of my own.
As I walked by, I just caught a glimpse of the cover of Beyond Good & Evil, and I was like "Hm, I think I've heard of this before. I wonder if it's good or not.". When I put it back, my mom was like "You want it?". At first I said "nah", but after a while I said "Can I have it? Just like that?" and she was like "Meh, why not.".
On the way home, I was feeling so guilty about wasting her money on something I had only heard the title of, without knowing if it was good or not.

Turns out it was. Really, really good. One of the absolute top games of all time, in fact.

An indy game called Night Sky. Great puzzles, great soundtrack, moody atmosphere.
Another was Portal.
A friend mentioned it so I thought I'd give it a shot. Best game I have ever played.

Edit - The Orange Box in general was probably the best purchase. Half Life 2 and TF2... plus as mentioned my favorite... Portal.

Fire Emblem 7! When I first got my GBA for X-mas, my dad took me to an EB Games so I could pick up some games for it with my Christmas money. I bought it and Onimusha Tactics (Being a huge FF Tactics fan at age 13, but never having played another tile-based SRPG). Onimusha Tactics was pretty meh, but to this day I've strong emotions about FE7. Game was HYPE dawg. <3

Every good game that I got during my younger childhood.

A more specific example would be Half Life 2. And Rare games like Banjo Tooie and Donkey Kong 64.

A more unique example would be Condemned: Criminal Origins. Seemed like a decent horror game, looked alright by the box art, maybe looked like a "6 out of 10" sort of game, one of those that looks pretty average but pretty alright. I had no idea of the fantasticness of what was to come.

Yes, Star Ocean 3. Never heard of the series prior to that and bought it strictly on the recommendation of the clerk at EBgames.

Rogue Galaxy. Cover looked interesting, so I bought it. The game has a couple of faults, but overall it's fantastic.

Oh yea, and Cel Damage Overdrive.

Okami, my chinese friend bought it for me as he is very enthusiastic about things he likes lol. I didn't know what to expect but I adored it. I love art and it was just beautiful, my sister loves it too and she usually doesn't give a second look to games.

Definately a game everyone should play.

Fallout 3, I had no previous background or knowledge of any games in the fallout series. Read reviews, everybody said it was awesome so I tried it out. All I have to say is fallout 3 is really awesome and was very fun to play, I even got GOTY.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Monster Hunter Tri
Fallout3 (I was expecting a typical run-and-gun shooter)
Armored Core: Last Raven

Animal Crossing. I actually went and bought Animal Crossing at the recommendation of my friend (without even seeing gameplay) at 10. I have never regretted it.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine. A friend played the beta and said it was awful, but I tried it about a year and a half after that and was impressed.
