Having difficulty finding games with longevity these days

Lately, I find I've been increasingly regretting game purchases that i've made. I usually just take it home, boot it up and rush through any singleplayer content.

By the time i finish the game, I usually end up to bored of the game to bother with multiplayer (either that or i don't think i'm good enough for competitive play).

What with PSN being down, Wii running out of any good games to try, 360 hardware sucking and failing, absolutely NO games to get for the 3DS...

What with video games being my life-long hobby, it saddens me that after all this time, i'm starting to become bored more quickly.

Anyone else ever experienced a similar slump or recommend any good "kickstarters" to get into?

Well... it doesn't really seem like I can convince you otherwise regarding the multiplayer. I'll just say that I know there are a lot of multiplayer games that aren't fun, but I personally have greatly enjoyed the Killzone 2 and 3 online, it's a big change from the singleplayer, when you actually play against human opponents.

Anyway, as for longevity of singleplayer games, RPGs really are the way to go. If you want some of the newer ones, I'd recommend Dragon Age: Origins(haven't played the second) and the Mass Effect series. The latter I've spent 60+ hours on, in just one playthrough.

I don't know you have a decent computer available, but if you do, the kings of longevity and replayability in games definitely are the old Bioware and Black Isle RPGs, like the Baldur's Gate series. I'm currently in my second playthrough of Planescape: Torment, a game I would recommend to anyone, if only for the story and the fantastic universe.

If you're sticking to the PS3, one of my favourite games is Demon's Souls. From my point of view, the gameplay is just plain fun. I've spend 100+ hours in that game on multiple playthroughs and I'm definitely not done with playing it. I plan to play in a not too distance future.

Hope that is of some help.

I notice you didn't mention the PC on that list.

You could give old-school RPGs like Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, and Fallout a try. Also, if you want longevity, the PC versions of Bethesda RPGs last forever with their extremely prolific modding communities.

Play some older games.

If you're aware that games can have longevity, surely you have some games that have lasted to the present day for you.

Have you tried Super Paper Mario for the Wii yet? And come to think of it, both Super Mario Galaxy Games provide a hell of alot of content.

I've had that feeling for a while now, I have no desire to play anything on my Xbox or PS3 really apart from maybe Motorstorm or MAG every once in a while. It sounds like you've just killed it, take a break or something or try and get into a completely different genre you've never tried before.

If you're looking for a game with longevity, I'd recommend Oblivion/Fallout for PC or an MMO. For console, I don't really know, single player games get boring without mods and multiplayer can grow tiresome, especially on games like COD, Battlefield etc.

You mention that you don't think you'd be good enough, try and get some people to play with you online, you won't care. That's the only reason I play multiplayer games on console now, for the people I play with, it changes the game completely for me. I know the PSN is down, but you could still go on Xbox if you're Gold, if not maybe Monster Hunter online or something?

If your computer can handle it you may consider getting Witcher (only five bucks till may 24) on the good old games website. You can also get Planescape: Torment, ARcanum, Baldur's Gate 2 and plenty of other long RPG games for the pc on that site for a reasonable price.

I recommend you do what I did which is to check out a local play-n-trade (assuming there's one near you), a flea market or, failing either of those two: amazon.com and invest in some old-school games/ consoles. Who knows? Maybe you'll find something great that you overlooked years ago. That's what ended up happening with me and the gamecube. Since you have a Wii, you can get gamecube games to start that you may have passed up like Paper Mario, Wind Waker, etc.

I've gone through a similar lethargy and I found going into the past helps.

Thanks for the quick replies!

CRUD! I did forget to mention that i do have a PC that i actually just recently upgraded like crazy. So feel free to suggest graphic-heavy games.

As for Wii titles i've played all of the first party Nintendo ones.

360 is broken, so no use for that brick. =P

Have you ever thought about playing an MMO? Course WoW is the best, but also the most expensive since you'd need to buy every expansion also. Rifts has a decent following as of right now, so I wouldn't expect it to disappear as quickly as a lot of the others have. Might even recommend waiting for The Old Republic.

Other than MMOs, old-school RPGs are about it. I did get a lot of time out of FallOut 3 and both the Dragon Ages, but still not as much as I did stuff like the Baldur's Gates and especially Diablo 2 (though a lot of that was also multiplayer.)

Also I've gotten a ton of playtime out of Plants vs. Zombies.

Me and Betsie (my 360) mourn your loss.

Old games are always the way forward. With the new age of digital distribution it's so much easier to go nuts with things you've never played before, heard of before, cared of before.

Go for Abe's Oddyssee and rescue all the muddokkens, that'll keep you busy.

You say there aren't any decent games for the 3DS and while I agree that does ignore the, plainly, just stupid amount of quality software on the DS. It's easily the best system on the market in terms of breadth of quality software.

One of the Mount and Blade games might give a lot of longevity for you if you get interested in it.

SpaceChem, currently $7.50 on Steam, has many, many levels that will have you scratching your head for a while, and has a good soundtrack while you're doing so.
Also, I challenge you to get 100% completion in Just Cause 2.

Try older games? Or wait for skyrim, I'm really excited about that and it will have hundreds of hours of playtime in all likelyhood.

It's funny how money can create this sort of situation. Up until I got a better job, I used to re-watch movies and TV shows constantly, I'd replay favorite games. Re-read books and comics.

In the past three years, I have too many movies, TV shows, books, comics, and video games to deal with... and I know I'm getting a much shallower experience that I used to.
