Nah, there are some conflicting ideas to suggest that humanity needs to perfect itself socially first. Instead of exporting all of our problems to space.

I'm on the boat for space but perhaps the most efficient strategy would be to do both.

If anyone is curious, the exploration through which we would find other planets and map the galaxy is theorised to be through the use of robots.

You send out 100 robots, each of them programmed to find a planet, land, and then create a centre to develop 100 more robots (Obviously the numbers will be different of course, probably closer to the thousands or millions). The robots will find the planet, send back data to the HUB, whether that is Earth or the earthling's favourite colony/space station.

Then they build the new robots and send them out to all their own planets to repeat the process.

Then BOOM, map of galaxies. Human search teams will be highly unlikely except for immediate landing parties to set up colonies or anything.

Or so I've learned from Michio Kaku's theories, there will of course be other ones so his shouldn't be considered the only possible solution.

But, if you're interested in physics, Michio Kaku's books and speeches are a really great place to learn and they make it accessible to mostly anyone.

Damn... I sound like an ad...

That's all!
Your talking about something like a von neumann machine:

seems like a good enough idea to me send out a one or two of these suckers to properly explore our solar system while gathering resources and building more of them selves, then send them out to explore. then every time they come across more resources they use it to build more and keep exploring.

something like this would also come in very handy against any hostile aliens we come across, give them adaptive A.I. and weapon scematics and watch as they self replicate and destroy our enemies.

what could possibly go wrong.

Pretty much!

And the only thing I could see going wrong is an overdose of awesomely good idea with no downsides.

Hawking's logic doesn't make a lot of sense; if humanity is always predisposed towards conflict, how would spacefaring change any of that? Everythign would just occur again on a larger scale once the technology to wage war at that distance became feasible.

I'm sure he just means in the beginning. It'll take a long time to travel around and warfare is hard and pointless with those sorts of constraints. Who knows what will happen in a few hundred years? What if we still don't have FTL? What if any sort of FTL actually is impossible? Worry about war once the weapons to wage it are at least in the realm of theory.

I'm growing tired of sci-fi pictures whenever Stephen Hawkins says something. Can't you include an actual picture of him?

OT: A nice space community turned wild is the plot of my upcoming short story.
You gotta send me that when you're done.

OT: Well, if we do colonize space, we'll be dead by then. So, I guess our great-great-great grandchildren will experience it. If it does happen, that will be awesome even if we never see it.
