I am just about to get into World of Warcraft, thinking of creating 1 Horde and 1 Alliance toon (may as well try all sides of the game)

Was wondering whether any current players could recommend a good realm to play on for either faction? I am on European servers.
Somewhere with a high population, active, friendly etc.

As for PvP/Normal-wise, I don't really mind. I hate getting ganked a lot, but don't mind the occasional bit of casual PvP. So either.

Thanks in advanced dear friends!

I enjoyed the quieter realms such as The Venture Company and such.

Good Luck!

No idea about EU realms, so I can't help there.

But if you are new to the game and are worried about being griefed by other players, choose a PvE realm, if not, pick anything. You should be safe until you hit Lv20-25 anyway on a PvP server due to how the game handles PvP in low level areas.

As for factions, probably just a better idea to focus on one, as you are unable to send items across faction if you have more then one character.

I wish I could help ya, but I know very little about European WoW servers, having played only on North American ones.

I hear it can be pretty harsh on some European realms given the number of spoken languages all around... But I think it's safe enough to assume that there are plenty of English-speaking realms. I've just had an unfortunate experience in my first year of WoW (back in vanilla =p) when my main server turned from a fairly diverse mostly English-speaking server to the unofficial Brazilian server - and when more then half of your server speaks languages you don't (Well, I've got a grasp on very basic Spanish, but that's about it) it really is a pain in the ass.

Although given the cross-server grouping, it might not be such a big problem, at least until it comes to looking for a guild.

You should probably go to WoW European Forums to find which servers fit you better in terms of languages (really, I don't know how it works, but I assume there would be some kind of groups of mainly English-speaking servers, mainly French-speaking servers, Spanish, and so on) and the timezone. Then check over [link]http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php/[/link].

I don't know if it's very correct, but it provides a general idea on server populations and imbalances. Because some servers, even today, might have something like 1000 Horde and 12000 Alliance, or vice versa, and it changes a lot of thing. The Auction house is rather bad for the side with very very few players, grouping and guilding might be a problem and so on.

As for server types, I've generally stuck to PvP servers until about 2 years ago when I made the transition to an RP-PvP server. Frankly, I like it. RP in WoW is sadly mostly gone for various reasons, but RP-PvP servers seem to attract at least some of the more mature and interesting players to hang around with. All my best guild experiences come from an RP-PvP server.

And it generally allows you the flexibility if you do want to roleplay at some point. Although about 90% of the population, in my experience, doesn't give a shit. But at least there might be a few % of people less annoying then your average PvP ego-head.

Hope that loooooong rant helped.

P.S. And you can make characters on both factions of the same server even on PvP realms now. It generally helps, after you get to level 80 you'll have access to "Bind on account" items that can be a major help in leveling new characters. You can't send 'em cross realm, but you can send 'em cross faction... So after getting to 80 on one side and playing for a while, you can send out a set of BoA leveling gear (that levels with you and is generally better then most drops until high 70s outside of raids and heroics, and certainly less troublesome) which would provide you with up to 25% extra experience and a decent weapon that levels with you.

Higher population servers are generally better, lower ones everyone has ridiculous high expectations of gear and won't let you do a raid unless you've already done it.
So really you need a guild to make any sort of progress in end game.
Also being on a PvP server with zero alliance is a bit strange... I would love to change server but the costs of me and my friends on the server transferring all our characters would be ridiculous.

I have heard that the NA RP-PvP servers are reasonable, unfortunately, there are no NA Oceanic ones. =(

I would also like to add that if you post up what class/style you were thinking of playing as we might be able to give you a few pointers from the get-go. o_O

My Advice For Alliance: Draenai. They are incredibly awesome, especially in the late 10-20's. I was thinking I wouldn't like them (especially since I really wanted Furbolgs to be the Alliance Race in BC), but they are just incredibly fun. My main is a Draenai Pally (Lvl. 27... I suck). I will definitely try Worgen when they come out though.

My Advice For Horde: None really. I prefer Undead, but they aren't addicting enough for me. Orcs Trolls and Tauren are Bland, and I haven't Tried Blood Elves but they don't look too fun. I will definitely try Goblins when they come out though.

Emerald Dream is good for English speakers - high population of people from Norway/Denmark (or so it seems) but I've had few run ins with angry bastards ^_^ Alliance side anyway :p

And my main is a Human Warrior, so my lack of imagination probably tells you how little I can help with that choice :p

Lets let him choose what Class he wants himself before we start feeding him opinions, 'kay?
Remember, not every race gets all the classes, and some races are quite bad at various classes.

My advice stick to horde and one character ----- alts just take up more time

game starts at 80 (sorry I won't listen to any different on this one)

be prepared for it to take over ------- over 100 days in playing time on two chars for me

if you are EU ---- go to steemwheedle cartel horde side and join PCG the official pc gamer guild, hundreds of members and a fantastic community.

You should start your Horde character on Dunemaul. High population and good PvP.
Another vote for Dunelol-- my friends and I all relocated there from our shitty underpopulated server and are pretty satisfied. If you roll on Dunemaul, though, go Horde-- our server's Alliance is pretty weak.

I used to be there!:D Rerolled Horde on Shadowsong though :)

My suggestion would be to go on a low populated none PVP server (RP or Normal, doesn't matter), and roll either Horde or Alliance, not both. Once you've had your full of one Character at 80, try the other Faction perhaps.

As for the game only beginning at end game? That is only true if you enjoy raiding, which not everybody does.
Everyone has different parts of the game they enjoy more.

What are the best EU servers community wise? you should start from one of those, because the community tends to be very arsh, expecially on newcomers :(

Maybe a roleplay server, PvE, i guess the folks there might be more friendly.

What do you guys think?

Don't take the WoW Community too seriously, 90% of the time you will be confronted with some of the most rudest and juvenile people you'll ever meet on the internet. Brush it off, say to hell with them, and go on your merry way.

The community is the reason I quit WoW Pre-Burning Crusade. I came back after Wrath of the Lich King was out to play with a best friend and I quit again from pure boredom of repeating the same cookie-cutter garbage content over and over. And that time I even was given an arbitrary "Fuck you" by someone for doing nothing other than asking them if they were on a certain quest that I was on...

Unless this resembles your own attitude towards other people, you just might be irritated by it too.

Anyways, the only US server I can badmouth is Stormrage. Don't play there.

Other than that, I just flat out don't recommend playing WoW at all... especially if you're easily addicted to micromanaging menial tasks over and over again.

I'd say yes you will most likely find nicer people on a Roleplay server. In WoW however, I came to discover that no one really roleplays on the roleplay servers... the occasional "cyber" but that's about it... God help you if you're a guy that likes to play female characters.

6 Basic things to know about World of Warcraft! as compiled by JonnoStrife.
1. Dont stand in the fire
2. If you wanna be a dick, be a paladin or a rogue. (Rogues are cheap dicks, Paladins are invincible dicks.)
3. Hunter's are easy mode. If you just wanna learn to play, go here first.
4. After you've played a hunter to about 30 or 35, Play a Shaman (Preferable Elemental. A shaman is effectively the Red Mage. Plus you can reincarnate yourself if you happen to die.
5. The raid fails if a warlock tanks.
6. Don't stand in the fire. Seriously.

Yeah, why even have roleplay server rules if they are not enforced?
I did some roleplay in WoW years back, but most of the times you have to ignore all the randomness around you, expecially in populated areas.

I had some brief but awesome roleplaying moments in LoTRO, thought.
