Don't take the WoW Community too seriously, 90% of the time you will be confronted with some of the most rudest and juvenile people you'll ever meet on the internet. Brush it off, say to hell with them, and go on your merry way.
While this is probably the most accurate thing I have read all evening, Sometimes what they will say will have merit. As long as you play to the best you can be and take on any and all constructive advice past along to you you will be fine.
(While not to derail the topic too far, I myself have a) Called a Ret Pally a moron after he keeps insisting on using SoJustice over SoCommand. b) Insulted various people on a daily basis for not buffing the rest of the group like everyone else is doing. c) Berating on Shaman that don't drop Totems) =3

My Advice For Alliance: Draenai. They are incredibly awesome, especially in the late 10-20's. I was thinking I wouldn't like them (especially since I really wanted Furbolgs to be the Alliance Race in BC), but they are just incredibly fun. My main is a Draenai Pally (Lvl. 27... I suck). I will definitely try Worgen when they come out though.

My Advice For Horde: None really. I prefer Undead, but they aren't addicting enough for me. Orcs Trolls and Tauren are Bland, and I haven't Tried Blood Elves but they don't look too fun. I will definitely try Goblins when they come out though.
I know this is getting close to somewhat derailing the thread, but oh well...

Why Draenei =o

Their accents are so annoying! And their weapons are so badly sized! Seriously, it's especially noticeable on female draenei. It might fit your character idea if you're into that sort of thing (I certainly am) but when most 2 handed swords look like longswords, and most one-handed swords look like daggers, it becomes a bit silly.

More on topic, when it comes to choosing races, you should really consider how they sound, how gear looks on them (I suggest going to wowhead and checking how various class raid armor sets look on most race/sex combinations. Seriously. There are some bad ones) and how their attacks are animated (That, you will have to look for in-game, mostly...).

Some races/genders have incredibly animations which you may or may not like. Some don't. But it goes a long way when you play a character for the equivalent of a few real life days over time. The female orc casting animation made me give up on a warlock alt (I still miss my old main from BC) until Cata, because their animation looks buggy and simply annoys me personally.

You might be less nitpicky, but still, consider all that.

Agreed, seeing as the one that needs to spend the most time looking at the character and listening to it is you, pick what you like seeing every time you log in and play. (Coming from someone who has almost every character a Blood Elf, go figure)

If you are not too concerned about appearance, there are some Class/Race combos that are better then others. (Example, Nightelf Priest? It works, but the racials are wasted for the most part, Human Priest? Most of the Racials are put to use.)
