The game is building. They're not asking you to make the game yourself.

The graphics are horrible, the physics are a joke, it's coded in Java so it crashes as often as Fallout: New Vegas, yet it's better than any of the Ultra-HD bullshit everyone else is playing. It's just fun, and it lets you turn your creative side loose.
How are the graphics horrible?
Last time I checked the Sun and the Moon were round.
Its a game world made out of building blocks - of course the Sun and Moon aren't round.

The graphics are good
The physics are as they are meant to be
It doesn't crash ever for me.

I don't really get it either. I bought the game and enjoyed it for a while. Not a bad game, but really nothing special either. I prefer games with a story and characters. I can somehow see the appeal of the game, but I imagine how you can play it for months.

I remember the first time I played Minecraft, I didn't like it that much either. The lack of instructions and any kind of story nearly put me off. But I kept trying to play it, because I saw that so many other people were enjoying it, and now I have a hollowed-out mountain city with a castle on top.

This [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MqkEZn8pN4&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_959953] really helped me, I hope it'll help you too.

It's amazing how many people crawl out of the woodwork to defend a game from someone praising it despite bad graphics. It's astonishing the knee-jerk reactions around here.

Keep it up guys, you're making me laugh. Now, to flesh out some interiors for the seven story iron skyscraper I built yesterday...
Yeah, that's why I only quoted you on the bit about the graphics, not the bit about you liking it, bright spark.

Have you played it?

I did indeed try the game, although I didn't last very long. Little or no instruction (at the time) or much of anything. And with my apparent lack of (self diagnosed) creativity. Its just not for me I guess. I remember the first time I played Morrowind, on my brothers Xbox. it was hard adjusting to such an open world with only a little direction, it got a little better when I played Oblivion. I just don't think I am up to making my own game lol.
/facepalm.

This opinion could not BE more misinformed.

You played it for only a little while - that's nothing like what people usually play MineCraft for. You're not designing a game, I have no idea where you got that idea from. And finally, MineCraft is pretty much impossible to play without the wiki. Major flaw, we all know, but it's necessary.

And on a sidenote, how much of Morrowind have you played?
I know I am not designing a "game" per se, but what I mean, is you build everything... whereas, in a more traditional game you don't. Unfortunately, not much morrowind was had for me. As I mentioned it was my brothers Xbox and we lived on different coasts... it did get me to pick up Oblivion though.

"I don't like shooters, why does anyone like shooters, I don't get it" <- can you see the problem there
Or let's go one up to really ram it in: "I don't like boys, why does anyone like boys, I just don't get it"

We don't all like the same things, if it's not for you then you should need to find another game, tip for life right there.

while your thought is a little over simplistic, its not wrong. I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to understand something new, however. I get a little insight into something I don't really understand, and (some) people get to tell me about a game they find enjoying. Win/Win if you ask me (you didn't) I will however "find another game" I don't think Minecraft is what I am looking for in a game. Nothing wrong with the people who DO enjoy it, but I am looking for something with more structure, something I don't have to build myself lol.
See this is what I'm talking about, if you were actually trying it rather then to publicly boasting about your dismissals we wouldn't even have this conversation, that is why I cut to the end and offered what you are looking for.

Anyway Minecraft is mostly just wrongly labeled and leads to confusion, because it is really not a game, it is simply a toy.
I did not dismiss it, I tried the damn thing till my head hurt. I am not publicly boasting about not liking it. I was attempting to gain insight into why other gamers did or did not have the same feelings. How are we going to grow as gamers if we don't try anything new? Do you automatically not try games based on prior experience? I wasn't trying to insult your game, dude, no hard feelings ok?

No, says the man at Bethesda, you have to pick the lock!
No, says the man at Bioware, only jedi can do that!
No, says the man at Konami, you have to find a certain item first!
I rejected those answers. I chose the impossible, I chose... Minecraft.
Minecraft! The only doors are the ones
you make, and if you decide you don't want them, you can always tear them down."

1: Oblivion/Fallout
2: KOTOR
3: Metal Gear Solid [any of]

OT:

I played Minecraft nonstop for about two months last year, then got bored. There is a limit to what you can do before it gets samey.

Makes us do the work? I thought games were different from any other medium because they LET YOU DO the work. Otherwise, your just watching a film in which the main character messes about for half the movie.
I see what your saying about the whole 'no objective, what do I do' stand point, but linear games are always better than sandbox games. I personally think sandbox games are much better because it's easier to connect with the character and be immersed. Admittedly this is hard in Minecraft when your character has no name or personality, but that leaves a blank slate to be filled by you, the player, so you can feel like there really IS a green dick exploding in your face.

I'd say Minecraft is fun ~for a time~, it's great fun when it's new, and you're discovering the world around you and figuring everything out, and then you make your first little house, and then you make your first little mine, and then you dig deep and discover redstone and diamond and gold and make yourself a compass and a clock and it's all neat. Then you make yourself a castle with all that excess stone you collected while trying to find the other materials. And then you use your excess sand to make a bridge of glass... aaand then you really start to lose interest because anything highly creative requires many hours of tedious labour if you want to do it without cheating the needed materials right into your pocket. Multiplayer adds some longetivity to it. But to me Minecraft honestly isn't a game I could play forever.

It's a world builder. The same people who play it play farmville and all the other non games. It's a sign of the times where the new gaming crowd is coming in. Look at angry birds, it's a game that has been around for years but someone repackages it and the least common denominator of gaming eats it up. Look who plays it, look what other games they have played in the past, and then you will know why it's so popular. Same with Minecraft, it's a poorly designed level editor, the same type of thing that's been around for years, repackage it and sell it to the same people who are playing browser games and phone apps. It's a fad and will fade in time. It's not novel, it's not a new idea, it's just accessible. So is Happy Fun Time Barbie Island Dream Maker.
You'd have to really try to top this in outright "wrongness". Look at who plays it? Look at what other games I play?

What is it about me?

What games have I played in the past?

Yeah, trying to stereotype everybody that plays minecraft is pretty absurd; I was playing gears of War earlier, Shogun 2 before that, minecraft after gears, and Bad Company after that.

Minecraft wins because it (and I'm going to get hanged for this) is a level editor set to "easy, fun happy kid times" mode. It breaks level editing down to its rudimentary forma and gives the user the key to use it. This makes it significant easier and mroe fun then opening UDK, the geck, or the NWN editor and messing around and also means less asset creation and design but also gimps the whole process to such an extent that its no longer visible in its original context. Its a lobtomization of the process of level design in order to try and extract one of the most core fun parts of it. People just latched onto it like lamprey (my god, the teeth) and started treating it like crack because they could finally understand the process and make stuff without heavy technically knowledge. Now, I have to go find my flame shield as all the minecraft people are probably preparing to fire a volley of flaming arrows at me.

Watch Zero Punctation's review he'll tell you why.
If you don't have the patience for 7 minutes of biting english humour then i'll tell you:most sandbox games give you all the tools and just go have fun! and leave you alone. But eventually you get bored of instant satisfaction, and you will get bored eventually. now with minecraft you actually have to work for your creation and it feels much more satisfying since you worked for it.

I have never been one for creating my own games anyway, I never built my own level in LBP or designed my own campaign in any of the Civ games, but all of those games at least had a game at the core, but MC doesn't as far as I can tell, yet its being put on such a pedistle, why? creativity? They are making you guys do all the work? Keeping the fact that its an INDI company, I say again... I DON"T GET IT.
Here, watch this video series. They're fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/show?p=M-_uPjfjVzc&s=1

It's fun because it uses your imagination and exploding bush penises. And if that hasn't sold it enough, mod in some planes for flying penis dog fights.
