Help with Okami, please?

I know a lot of people here love this game, so I thought I would ask this here (as well as the Gamespot Okami forum) because I am very stuck...

I'm just completely lost. I really want to like this game but I am rapidly losing interest.

It's nothing about the gameplay that I don't understand, there just.. doesn't seem to be any clear indication of what I have to do next? Up to this point I enjoyed it because my hand was basically held through the whole thing by Issun who gave me helpful tips and told me what to do. (call me crazy, but I like that in my games) but now I have no clue what I am supposed to do next. It's difficult to explain exactly which point I am at since the game is so open ended, but I'll try.

I am in Shinshu Field, I seem to have restored it. I restored the Guardian Sapling in the area anyway. I have learned Bloom, Cherry Bomb, Rejuvenation, Sunrise, Power Slash... I also talked to the trainer who taught me two new moves. Near the moon cave entrance there is a little house that I went inside and was given a list of monsters to kill that only appear at nighttime, and I have only killed one so far.

I really don't know if that's a side quest or an integral part of my progression that I need to do next. Do I need to wander around at night for a while to come across all these monsters and kill them all?

I read an FAQ that was basically a checklist of things to do in each area, and it tells me I have to feed all the animals and collect stray beads and other things... Do I really have to do all these arbitrary things to proceed with the storyline? I just don't want to do all that stuff, I like a constant progression in the games I play and its just holding me back and unenjoyable. Really sad if this is the case because I love the aesthetic design and general uniqueness of the game. But perhaps it's just not my kind of thing.

No I have not encountered any bosses yet at this point.

Been a while since i last played but here goes:
I think you are at the point where you have to restore all the black cherryblossoms. They can be found around shinshu field and the village. After that you find Mr. Orange (or lime?) on the look out in front of Sakuya's tree.

That should be it so far.

It gets even more cryptic later in the game... I had to use a walkthrough to get through Okami because I didn't have the patience to go searching all the options.

Hrm if you just want to beat the game you don't have to feed all the animals and neither is it necessary to collect the beads.

In the menu button on the PS2 version you can view the Logbook which is basically your Questlog. It usually tells you where you should go. Amusingly after played it through some months ago i started it again for som hours an i'am at the same point.

Over here it says that you should visit Sakuya by the tree back in the starting village.

Thanks mate, this helped... I didn't want to find all the cherryblossoms by wandering around until I came across them so I used a detailed map on the internet to find them all. I passed that bit now and Mister Orange did his dance, but this game is really not looking up to be appealing to me... I don't feel like consulting the internet every time I get stuck and I really dislike it when games don't give me clear objectives and mark things on the map. I preferred it before when I had an arrow pointing to my next objective.

I don't think I am going to play any further.

I say give it more of a chance, there are only 2 or 3 points in the game where the path ahead becomes unclear... and there is always (EDIT: nearly always...) some hint or NPC to tell you what to do.

Biggest tip I can give, as in most adventure RPGs:

Talk to everyone every time you enter an area, even if you've spoken to them before

The flautist in the village (he's at the entrance as you come back from the field) makes it very clear that you should restore all the trees, if you take the time to talk to him. 2 other NPCs tell you go to and talk to the Village Elder.

When you get into the next area (Forest) there's even a fortune teller who can give you tips on the entire rest of the adventure.

You have to use Bloom on every tree in the town, forgotten the name.

Talk to Mr Orange to see how many are left and talk to him when you are done.

Also the Hunting side quest is useless, the items you get from it only pay off when you have a few weapons, at the start you end up replacing weapons once a dungeon, mid-way through you start getting weapons you use consistently because youll pick one kind and use them all the time. And you can buy the items but money is mostly pointless, if you get about 60 small bones/30 medium bones you dont have to buy anything except for weapons and a few key items.

And at the end the game just vomits treasure worth 5000 yen + in almost every chest, so money becomes worthless. Horde the fangs/horns/ what ever they are, those give some VERY good gear later on.

I really need to go back and get all the beads some day...

Gah, I do love this game but it's one of the few that I actually had to use a walkthrough to finally beat it.

Pretty much that. The only other time I had to use a walkthrough for a game was Casltevania: Symphony of the Night. That goddamn inverted castle made me want to throw my controller through the wall.

Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker were two more I had to use walkthroughs for. Not for the dungeons, but to progress the damn story... how was I meant to know to bomb that lone rolling Goron??

That actually was my first instinct when I saw him. I kept trying to hit him with a sword and an arrow, then I got pissed and said "I'll just blow up the fucker" Probably not the best thing for a 6 year old to be thinking :p

And other than Castlevania SotN, I used a guide (or walkthrough) for Oblivion just to find quests and the Daedra shrines and for Majora's Mask to find all the extra masks.

Yeah, I mean with Oblivion you could search every damn ruin until you stumble upon the Ayleid statues, but it's so much less painful to just look it up.

Indeed it is. I actually tried wandering around until I stumbled across something, but that took ages and while it was fun, I just ended up looking up all the quests on the Oblivion Wiki.

You can wait for night fall and go to the fireworks shop where you'll be able to learn the "bomb" brush technique.

But your main order is to return to Konoha and bloom all the cherry blossom trees wich will allow Mr. Orange to preform is shuffle dance and bloom Sakura's tree. Wich, if I remember correctly will give another brush technique that will help you cross water.

Geez, kids these days. I never used any kind of guide and only ever got lost for about ten minutes at a time.

This is what happens when you make every game as easy as "follow the marker/compass indicator." Everybody loses their game-sense. They're called adventure games for a reason...
Kids?? Yeah I am nearly 20... I've also been gaming for about 11 years. There's something called different tastes, and yes I do prefer it when games have a clear marker and routes to objectives. You shouldn't act patronizing just because I am more of a casual player than you are.

Anyways back to the topic at hand, I have gone back to the game and I have played a few hours more. Still not sure if the game is appealing to me or not, at times I am really enjoying myself and other times I lose interest pretty quickly and don't feel like continuing. I will keep going for now. I have played 7 hours so far so it must be doing something right for me.
