This is Lou Reed's song primarily. Even stoned out of my fucking mind, Lou Reed is fucking boring to listen to. The only part of it that's remotely listenable is when Lou shuts up and James takes over for like 15 seconds, and even then the lyrics are shit. I honestly think this was metallica going "ok, we'll do a song with you" and then after seeing what they're working with coming to the realization that Lou Reed is a talentless piece of shit. Metallica is usually a REALLY high energy band, and listening to this I can tell that they put absolutely no heart or effort into it at all.

Seriously.

I'm kinda baffled that people legitimately like this band. Their songs just don't... end.

It sort of sounds like Metallica were trying to mimic early Black Sabbath, with a doom-style riff, but it just sounds dull. Lou Reed's vocals drone and both he and Hetfield are hidden beneath the guitars. Kurt also hasn't lost his taste for bland solos.

As the first track from their new collab album, it's disappointing. I hope the rest of the album outstrips this by a mile.

Hey now, that's just too mean... there are some pretty awesome Strat knock offs out there :3

Seriously though, I completely agree with you. I thought this was a joke at first but it was just... truly awful. There really isn't one thing going for it in its entirety. Nothing about it is redeemable and the only thing good to come out of it will be that meme. Dear God, that is funny and I hope Metallica won't be able to get away from being the table. XD

I stopped caring when The Black Album came out. Mind you I think Lou Reed's vocals is the biggest problem with this track. He'd sound better with different music behind him, and Metallica would sound better with some completely different vocals to this song.

First: this isn't the new 'Metallica' song. This is Reed's project and he's teamed up with Metallica who have contributed to arrangements. It's a collaboration.

Second: to the idiot who brought up Cliff Burton: he was the most progressive musician of the lot -- introducing the band to influences like Thin Lizzy and The Police.

Now, pedantry out of the way:

The album is based off a theatrical production, among other things. I would like to hear the entire album because there should be a narrative and other creative elements/arrangements which create a cohesive body of work. I actually dug this track, as it builds up to this cathartic release and could be an interesting bridge for Lulu's story. Also has a Stoner Rock vibe which I dig. This isn't classic, or even straight up Metallica, though.

What I like about Metallica is that they're not afraid to do things that aren't 'Metallica'. This collaboration will divide fans and the posers who have never followed the band will assert their opinions, as usual. And I sincerely hope it does -- it has been the reaction to every Metallica project since Ride the Lightning.

Looking forward to giving Lulu a good listen. Thank god for bands which explore new ideas. *Listens to Heritage*
Sorry, I just couldn't help but quote you - everything you've said here, I agree with.

Also, Heritage is fucking brilliant, isn't it? A lot of people are saying it grows on you, but I dug it from the first listen. It's probably my album of the year so far.

They won't die because they made millions suing their fans. Why did you even give them this much attention?

Woah, that really really really sucks. It sounds like something a college band would come up with as their first song. Jeez, I really do hope they go into a hole and DIE!

Metallica was the first band I ever really got into when I was probably 15 or so. I remember Load had just come out. For 3 or 4 years all I listened to was this group so they'll always have a soft spot with me and my musical development even if I don't really listen to them anymore. Unlike a lot of people I even think Reload is their best album, it might not be "metal per se" but musically it's varied and interesting, filled with lots of interesting harmonies and progressions. I like that, love it even.

But this?

Awful. I recognize that it's really a collaborative effort but it's hard to imagine everyone involved didn't at least think maybe they shouldn't release this.

Don't have an issue with people not digging a piece of music. That's just the way of subjectivity and art-appreciation. But look at this thread -- comments which go way beyond 'I don't like this for reasons X, Y and Z' to pure unrestricted and unqualified vitriol.

Becoming as big as Metallic is something a lot of artists want to avoid, because whenever Metallica puts out, or is involved with a new artistic work, it brings out a whole bunch of people who assert empty opinions, ie. "this sucks", "Metallica sold out", "I listen to real methulz clazzic metlica". This has been the way of things since the mid 80s and has just become more pronounced as the band has progressed in their career.

It's really quite funny. It becomes even more comically absurd when the arm-chair generals haven't even gone out of their way to see where the source material is inspired from, how it has been written and where its context and thematic nuances lie. This isn't just music, but an infusion of drama, poetry, impressionism, intense yet detached emotion and most assuredly music -- all of which you can hear masterfully played out in this track.

For most people: the significance will fly well over their heads, because this isn't 'pick up and listen' music and a large number of people have a 'NASCAR' understanding of what Metallica is as a musical outfit.

For a few, they will understand but won't find it in their taste and for those of us who 'get' it, we will appreciate a progressive and challenging work. I wasn't excited originally because I would love to hear a follow-up to Metallica's great Death Magnetic. However, the more I've learned/heard about this collaboration, the more exciting it has become. This is as far away from mainstream as Metallica have ever been in their career -- I applaud them for that. A monolithic band with artistic merit and passion. And for Lou Reed, this is a bold undertaking. This is pretty much all his work.

I gave Heritage a whirl. Very different, and jazzier. Lots of subtle grooves and melodic nuances that are quite subtle, yet daring. Still trying to piece its story together, but I really dig it. When you consider what 'Heritage' denotes and connotates, it becomes less disjointed and morphs into something beautiful, yet brooding and sad, like the old family photo album at the back of the family cupboard.

Some great music out this year, that's for sure. Should definitely check out 'Unto the Locust' if MH's music tickles your fancy. Very powerful. Very passionate. Stunning musicianship.

I get it, man. I do. Also, I won't judge you at all for liking this. My dad for some reason enjoys St. Anger and I liked Death Magnetic quite a bit, so I learned to respect different opinions.

I really do believe you're overthinking this, though. Songs can be wonderful and deep, poetic, progressive, weird and different. But... I can't say that about this Metallica/Lou Reed project. The lyrics aren't gripping, and it doesn't sound like there's any passion in the words at all. For something that's supposed to be artsy, it seems soulless. I don't believe the band is as horrible a sellout as people claim they are, if they were, they would've never even started this project, but it just doesn't work. Musically, it doesn't work. I honestly cannot think of a single redeeming thing when it comes to this song. It just sounds like a collection of nothingness. Literal nothingness. It's almost scary to me.

Also, don't think of me as someone who can't appreciate what he doesn't understand. I'm actually quite into different music. From the insanity of Devin Townsend, to the absolutely senseless yet beautiful auditory assault of Behold... the Arctopus to the simplistic and ultimately soothing, almost soundless tunes of Stars of the Lid.
