No it isn't. Ubisoft only got the rights to M&M when 3DO went bust.
This, however, it -is- arguably a franchise zombie at this point, one that refuses to die at that. I hope this new one is going to be better than the last one.

Well. So much for that. My interest has immediately been set to zero.

I was hoping they were actually going to revive the original franchise- I'd love to see what Might and Magic X could do to compete in the modern Bioware-dominated landscape of PC RPGS. Hell, even a sequel to Dark Messiah would have been interesting. But if it's just another friggin' HoMM game I just couldn't care.

I thought that too, but...something tells me they aren't going -that- far back, and most likely are looking at the success of the new King's Bounty and Armoured Princess, both of which got pretty excellent reviews.
Perhaps, but the way the article was written (to me) suggests either the writer linked the wrong King's Bounty game by accident or something else. King's Bounty: The Legend came in 2008, i.e. after the last HoMM game (HoMM:O excluded), Armored Princess in 2009/2010 and Crossworlds next month as I'm sure you know, so perhaps we'll see them take some cues from KB, but I don't think there's much they can do without "betraying" what the franchise was about.

We're either going to end up with something similar to HoMM V, or in a very weird twist, a clone of King's Bounty: The Legend/Armored Princess. I have to say I'm more excited about Crossworlds, but it's the closer release.

Count me as one of the few who thought HoMM IV was actually pretty good aswell!

Always enjoyed the HoMM games, so I eagerly await this new one!

I haven't cared about this series since 2. 3 was ugly and boring, and 5 was just off my radar. I hope there is a real return to their former greatness, it was a pretty good series in it's day.

Yes, beacuse turn-based strategies are certainly ten a penny (read: common) these days. :p Although I suppose I understand your feelings, given that RPG's are only doing marginally better.

It's kind of ironic, actually. Even though Heroes of Might and Magic is a spinoff, it is arguably much more famous than it's original RPG counterpart. Heck, I personally didn't even know about the Might and Magic series for a very long time and HoMM was one of my earliest gaming experiences.

Anyway, I am not sure how I feel about this news. While it is always exciting to have a new HoMM game (especially considering how scarce turn-based strategies are on PC platform), the big question mark here is Ubisoft's infamous DRM method. While R.U.S.E is said to use Steam experimentally, there is no telling if they will decide to use that method with HoMM VI. While I am not very fond of Steam either, I would still much perfer having to use it rather than the method Ubisoft has employed for most of it's latest PC titles.

Well, I disagree, but I respect your opinion.

I'm also more excited about Crossworlds, but not just because it's sooner. I've actually been having more fun with the new King's Bounty games than I did with the old HOMM ones. Don't get me wrong; I liked HOMM3 as much as the next guy, but there's just something about KBTL that drew me in more right from the start. I'm sure it probably helps that it has the classic gameplay and nostalgia factor while also being a fully modern game with all the improvements I'm used to in terms of better interfaces and stuff. I'll wait and see how HOMM6 turns out after the last couple games have been kind of meh. For the time being, though, I'm more confident in Katauri's ability to turn out consistently fun games lately.

Tom, you've linked to the wrong King's Bounty. That one is a much more recent reinvention of the series. You want this one [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_bounty], which was done by the same people as HoMM, but predates the HoMM series by four years.

Pedantry aside, I'm very excited for this. Now to wait for information from the 1C booth.
I did link to that purposefully, but only because you can't really buy the original King's Bounty in many places anymore. Though I suppose I could link to the Commodore 64 one... I just figured I'd link to the remake/re-do.

Heroes of Might and Magic (the first 3, at least) are, like, my childhood and my present.

Not to mention King's Bounty, and the RPG that spawned Heroes of Might and Magic... Although I haven't played most of those games, I think I've only played VII and VIII of all the 9 or 10 of them.

In short, I'd love to see how it turns out... Although I haven't even played HMM 5 yet.

Is it any good? As in, any better then HMM 4? I mean, that one had it's redeeming moments like being able to use your heroes in combat and stuff, but the cities and the story were just shit, I miss the old plot of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 with that Tarnum guy. Or whatever his name was, the immortal dude who kept reincarnating to fix his fuck-ups...

I thought II and IV were fantastic, not to say III wasn't good but I personally loved playing the Wizard in II and hated the way Tower played in III (their units are way too slow). I absolutely loved II's map editor (interface was more user friendly personally) and the only bad thing I can say about IV is the annoying fog of war.

Whoa. When I first saw the teaser trailer I was already expecting a first-person, real-time, "reimagining" of the series. My faith in humanity and Ubisoft has just gone up a notch. I'm really looking forward to this. XCOM can suck it.

Remasterized? That's actually the word they used?

Questionable grammar and vocabulary aside (on Ubisofts part, not the actual article of course) I'll be curiously awaiting the arrival of this game. HOMM 4 was an unmitigated disaster, but 5 was pretty decent, it still lacked the polish and appeal of 3 but it was okay. Unfortunately ever since they made the baffling decision to not only allow a book adaptation to blow up the original world (literally, I'm not making that up) and then actually allow it to be considered canon, will probably always prevent me from getting into HOMM as much as I did with 1-3.

You know, this would excite the hell out of me if I'd actually spent the time on playing through HOMM V like I've always meant to. HOMM III remains my pick for greatest PC game of all time (alongside Master of Orion II). HOMM IV was disastrous for a number of reasons. With V I was just too late to the party and didn't give it the hundreds of hours it deserves.

p.s. I have all the games going back to the original King's Bounty.
