Hey anime fans, is the Dragon Ball series actually revered as a good anime?

Well personally I liked the Dragonball manga, but I do not like the anime as much. I think this comes from the fact that when they are charging up their power that takes maybe a couple pages in the manga rather than minutes when you watch the anime.

I also thought it was better in the start when there was more humour and less focus on the intense battles. The battles are cool, but I liked the part of Dragonball where I was reading it rather than looking at pages.

I don't think it's good enough to be universally revered by anime fans. The important thing to remember is anime fans enjoy different types of anime. If I introduced someone today to anime through it, they'd probably be too sceptical and expect something amazing to justify my obsession with anime, and they'd be disappointed and probably ragequit saying something along the lines of "all anime is shit".

Well Dragon Ball is considered a genuinely good anime and one of the most influential. Dragon Ball Z however jumped the shark but in a good way. It's just ridiculous

DBZ is good... in theory... but is badly in need of an editor.
If you've seen Yatzhee's review of the Metal Gear Solid,you know what I mean.

I've heard the original DB series and DBGT are better, but I can't verify that.

Dragon Ball is a freaking masterpiece, tugs all the right strings, fights aren't as long as are a lot more reserved, there are a ton of fun side characters and it's silly moments are actually pretty damn funny.

DBZ is what Dragon Ball was leading up to, people liked the fighting and the "I MUST BE STRONGER" mentality, so they went with that in ever more silly ways, this time more WTF than funny. Though the battles do sometimes drag on for several episodes on end this is more due to the fact that the studio behind it ordered so many filler episodes and instead of relying on conventional anime fillers like bs slice of life or Gohan's school life they dragged it on in the fights, or preparing for the fights. It's all centered around God level beings duking it out until the other and everything around them, and their planet, is down and out.

DBGT is like bad fanfic. The show tried calling back to the Dragon Ball era by being, in it's beginning, Dragon Ball hunts only in space. Goku became a kid again, by sheer amount of scriptwriting fail 'cause they retconed that the first chance they got by making the super sayan 4 an adult. They had frieza and Cell join forces to fight Goku which just blurted random crap like "Oh that's krillin's attack" "oh man you guys your tough but I'm better", and don't get me started with Pan. The problem with this series is just that they make all these weird changes to the lore at a moments notice so freaking fast and without warning that it makes your head spin.

So in all.

DB - Pure absolute win.

DBZ - Goes off the deep end but is awesome, especially the Namek Saga.

DBGT - KILL IT! KILL IT BEFORE IT SPREADS!

EVA is waaay overrated and was crappy even for it's time, on the other hand DBZ is awesome, for it's time it was groundbreaking and opened the path for anime like Naruto and Bleach.

Personally I like Naruto just a little bit more, but I get why people still love DBZ to death. It's fun ^_^

Agreed. I like Goku both normal and abridged. Normal Goku is just one of the most laid-back guys I've ever seen, but when shit goes down, he knows it, and acknowledges it.

I'd say eva is worth it for the art and the battles. Everything else is pretty much meh. The characters are unlikeable, the story is nigh on impossible to follow unless you have a faq sheet on you, the main character is a whiny b**** and whenever the big robots aren't going at it the whole thing is a snore fest. You want good Mecha anime try gundam.

Original Dragon Ball was a much better show then DBZ. It wasn't dragged out so much and the villains/obstacles were less cliche.

I agree with the poster above me on Evagelion on unlikable characters and slow pacing especially during the middle of the series.

No... No, it's not really all that good when you just sit down and analyze it.

The art style is typical Akira Toriyama. It's all a matter of personal taste, but I don't like it. The hair, the foreheads, the lips... Not a fan. But that's all opinion. I you look at the facts, then you'll notice that the animation itself is quite sloppy, with the typical "repetition" syndrome a lot of anime shows have. The pacing is some of the worst I've ever seen. The story itself has its rare moments here and there, but is pretty nonsensical overall.

Let me put it like this, if Michael Bay had been born in Japan, he probably would have been the guy to make Dragonball Z. Shallow story, tons of hectic action scenes and way longer than it should be. However, it is accessible, so a lot of people like it.

Then again... I'm not a huge fan of anime series, I'm more of a movies guy. The only ones I liked AND actually watched all the way till the end, are FLCL and Paranoia Agent.

Are you kidding me? Do you know how many anime's try to copy Evangelion? It was groundbreaking aswell and has almost a cult like following. And as for Gundam, apart from Gundam 00, I found Gundam to be very boring.

It should be left to a matter of opinion really. I think Eva should be atleast be watched once instead of relying on what others think. Even if I personally would argue that it is good.

It's a dumb, over the top action show. And there's nothing wrong with that.

If you want something more High Brow... well, can i recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena? I'm not much on an anime fan but even i enjoyed that show. It's a surrealist meditation on traditional gender roles, the objectification of women and the act of growing up and becoming an adult. Really interesting stuff. You should watch the movie first, though... afterwards you will want to watch the show, just to understand what the movie was all about.

Because fans do not like change and you can't get the right DBZ experience without sitting through hours of powering up, grunting, and filler. I honestly don't know how serious I was being with that last part.

Also, if you don;t know what GT is, I sort of envy you. But do know it's where pink shirt vegeta came from(...i think)

I did enjoy the show growing up. My sister was an utter fanatic and bought the box-sets so I did end up watching along. Each set took a God damn day to finish in one sitting.

But would I consider it a GOOD anime or even admit to LIKING it? Nah, probably not.I was gonna type out a long rant but I think it'd be too long plus I'd just be repeating what other people would be saying
