Hey anime fans, is the Dragon Ball series actually revered as a good anime?

It was one of my favourite programmes when I was a kid, but I've tried watching it again recently, and I can't stand it anymore. It's just so damn boring. The characters don't so much fight as they stand around and talk about fighting.

EDIT: On the flipside, I used to think Gundam was really dull when I was a kid, but now I really enjoy it. Tastes change.

I'd say eva is worth it for the art and the battles. Everything else is pretty much meh. The characters are unlikeable, the story is nigh on impossible to follow unless you have a faq sheet on you, the main character is a whiny b**** and whenever the big robots aren't going at it the whole thing is a snore fest. You want good Mecha anime try gundam.

Indeed those who dislike Eva seem to be the vocal minority where I come from.
Are you kidding me? Do you know how many anime's try to copy Evangelion? It was groundbreaking aswell and has almost a cult like following. And as for Gundam, apart from Gundam 00, I found Gundam to be very boring.

It should be left to a matter of opinion really. I think Eva should be atleast be watched once instead of relying on what others think. Even if I personally would argue that it is good.
Tbh, I watched the entire series and read all the manga and this is my opinion on it as an old fan and follower of the series. The story borders on nonsensical until you see the big picture, which isn't in it's favor by any scope of the imagination, most of the time you're left hanging on just what the hell is going on, which is a real shame because in the end of it the story is good, but it's just not presented to you as well as it should.

Character development apart from Asuka (which still sort of follows the checklists) is pretty much left to be imagined, Shinji is one of the single most annoying protagonists in any anime to date, (I get his story arch is that he's depressed and yata yata, well... so was Rin from Immortal blade, and her depression and lust for revenge was made interesting, so it's all a matter of story telling capability). Rei is just there for fanservice, sure she's this big plot point and all but I can't help but feeling that they really got all the millage out of her, being constantly beat up, torn apart, groped, left butt naked to the audience for no reason other than to match an anime nude quota.

The animation quality is unmatched, if anything that's the single reason I tolerate the show, it's awesome, the battles are good, the character design is excellent, the mechs and enemies are insanely well put together by a master animator as well as a master artist, and the battles have real tension going for them, the mechs, though powerful, are not mary sues, they can't take a beating or they and their drivers are screwed, and that I love about the show.

I all, it's decent. The animation and battles alone are worth watching or reading the manga, but the characters are bland and cliché. Asuka is the tsundere fanservice tough girl, Shinji's the underdog that doesn't believe in his own skills and is depressed, Rei is the quite goth chick fanservice.

Sure the show has been copied to hell and back and the formula sort of stuck and it could be debated that this show is one that either reinforced or established the clichés I'm accusing it of, but still, it's all to drab, and boring, and just downright confusing storytelling keep it from being truly great.

If you want good anime watch Akira, or Chihiro, hell Paprika or Elfen Leid (which is fanservice central, but still pretty good), or just read Immortal Blade which has a far more intricate storyline with much more interesting characters and artwork with a nice blend of mythological grounded on real life scenarios.

It was dumb fun. Except for the long talky bits before each major fight, those were just dumb.

The reason it's iconic is because it was the first of it's kind.

Elfen Lied just didn't do anything for me... some parts were just plain awkward (like those including pee or when she acts like a toddler), I really viewed parts of it as pedo bait. Or like when people would lose limbs every 5 seconds...

I have nothing against fan service either...

But you guys are kinda being like hipsters, there are tons of newer and better anime out there. By suggesting such dated stuff you are really making it less accessible to new viewers.

While I would still recommend DBZ as a something to watch there are others I'd add in. Not to mention that you also have to account for individual taste. (note that if I suggest an anime over a few years old it also likely has new seasons out in the last year).

Like I'm more of an all rounder but here are some I loved and their respective traits.

Slice of life/love story - Bakuman

Mech - Difficult but I'd probably go Eureka Seven or Accel World

For fighting anime I'd still go with DBZ cuz it's pretty timeless but I'd add Naruto as well. (I don't necessarily think Naruto will age as well), Bleach starts out really well but has kinda fizzled out.

For your more fantasy shonen type stuff I'd like to recommend Full Metal Alchemist as I think it is an amazing series but I know the new series isn't as accessible to newer viewers, so I'd probably have to go The Blue Exorcist or Avatar The Last Airbender. Spirited Away (Chihiro) is pretty good.

I'd also like to give a honorable mention to Angel Beats, even though I couldn't really recommend it to newer viewers either, it has a lot of heart.

But do you get what I mean about not dwelling on what was the best when you were younger, there's a sense of romance about old anime you've watched, I get it too but I still see that anime is getting better all the time. DBZ however is an exception, because the art style it has hasn't changed it has allowed for it to still be accessible to newer audiences, my little cousin had been playing the new Dragon Quest on DS and was able to immediately recognize and associate with DBZ's style.

Where as take someone who has seen this seasons newer anime and show them EVA, they'll just be like what is this?

Okay, let's do this in high-speed.

Dragon Ball Z is not revered by the anime community. It's revered by everyone. And it sucks. Of course it does. Any complaints you might have about Naruto or Bleach, Dragon Ball did it first and worse.

And I don't give a crap. It's loads of fun, even with what may be the worst pacing in all of history - and I didn't watch any of it when I was a kid. If nothing else, it's worth watching because it's basically a cultural icon.

Oh, and I guess I should comment on Evangelion while I'm here. Everyone has their own unique opinion on exactly how good or how horrible Evangelion is. I think within Japan it's still considered the greatest anime ever, whereas outside opinions are much more mixed. Here's the skinny:

Evangelion is overrated. Another overrated thing is Ocarina of Time. Ocarina of Time is a very good game. Evangelion is a very good show. This is a bad analogy because, unlike Ocarina, Evangelion is riddled with flaws on every level: technical problems, plot insanity, heavy-handed whatever, philosophical problems (yes, really), and everything sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. And the ending...well, the fact that there are people who like the ending is proof that indeed there is at least one person who will like anything.

But it's good it's good it's very very good and there's really no denying that. It's a completely different kind of cultural icon.

If I were to recommend anime: Death Note (possibly best gateway drug anime ever), Fullmetal Alchemist (I would say Brotherhood, most people would say the other, honestly who cares you'll watch both eventually), Gurren Lagann (I swear people who've never watched anime before like it even more than I do), Code Geass because it's my personal favorite, and for lulz, how about Trigun. There. Go watch those. Now.

P.S. Because somebody mentioned it and said it was good: there is nothing good about Elfen Lied. Not interesting to watch, no interesting plot, no stimulating thematic whatever, and if you thought the nudity would make it worth watching for...other...reasons, well, no luck to be found there, either.

I do agree that most of my recommendations are dated, but they are so for a reason. Call me hipster if you must but most anime nowadays are high school, slice of life, cute-fest, moeblobs with an over emphasis on lolicon. Hell the new Saint Seiya I had been looking forward to turned out to be this ridiculous high school drama with the saint powers reduced to pokemon abilities. The anime that aren't moeblob messes are just pure blatant fanservice, like high school of the dead, which is awesome but the excessive fanservice kinda gets in the way. There's a reason why Lara Croft was sexy, and it wasn't because I could see her bare ass every few minutes.

I know there's a thing with anime girls and boobs every now and then, but back in the day Bulma tits were few and far between in Dragon Ball episodes, nowadays it's almost guaranteed we'd have at least an upskirt, butt or boob shot, to say nothing of the endless stream of shower scenes. I've nothing against T&A, but holy balls, it's getting absolutely ridiculous. Kanokon pretty much survived on fanservice alone, on all freaking fields, so did Matumoto Mashimaro with the "KAWAI YURI LOLI" bs.

For me the golden age of anime has come and gone, and while I really do like the medium I can see it's grown stagnant. For every Nodame Cantabile, Deathnote, Trigun, Cowboy Beebop and Kite there's a wasteland filled to the bone with Naruto and naruto wanabees, unfunny high school slice of life comedies and pervy 10yo lolicon girls aching for dad/teacher/older brother.

Is Dragon Ball Z good? no.... no... no no no nonononononononNONONONONONONOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Fun to watch? Yes, quite.

Dragonball is a better Anime in regards of story telling but it also seems very by the numbers at times, like all Dragonball series. Dragonball GT is a horrible thing and I pity those who watch it.

Yes, its good, the fights are good, and the music is the most memorable ones i ever heard in an anime, and i mean, pretty much all of them are amazing, and each saga has its unique tones to them.

Of course is simplistic nowadays, bu Dragon Ball Z is over 25 years old. Everyting would be cliche as of now.

Dragon Ball Z is one of those shows you can jus watch. No matter where they are, No matter how many times you see it, watching buff dudes fight franically with planet sized power nevr gets old.

It pretty much set the formula for modern shounen manga. As said before, you can't deny it's success, only it's style.

Fights are action packed, story is basic, and it's silly moments are pretty entertaining. I recently rewatched all of DB and DBZ and some of it's gags still managed to make me laugh after the 7 years it's been since I cried like a child watching the ending of GT.

I personally recommend Kai to newcomers because it really fixes the pacing, removes filler, and uses a pretty awesome orchestral track that really worked well.

I love Goku's character in the Abridged series. He's so delightfully retarded. Well, there's a sentence I never thought I'd type.

omfg...this abridged version is so hilarious.

Scene where Krillin and Gohan are spying over the hill on Freiza, Zorbon, and other guy:

Krillin: Geez, these aliens are scary. Especially that one in the front[referring to Freiza]. Looks like a total FAG.

Gohan: Krillin!

Krillin: What? A Freaky Alien Genotype. What'd you think I meant?

Gohan: Oh, I thought you were calling him a derogatory term for a homosexual.

Krillin: THAT THING'S A GUY!?

Dragon Ball Z was fun when I was a child, but I couldn't watch it now. It hasn't aged at all well, and it stuffed with filler.

It's still a good story though, so I recommend reading the Dragon Ball manga.

I think it is revered ( along with Pokemon) as being responsible for getting my generation of westerners into anime in the first place..... As far as quality goes.... um no, not really I mean when stacked against ( insert Miyazaki film here) it is about the size of an amoeba.

Side note, I misspelled Miyazaki when initially writing this and auto-correct suggested Yakima (a city in Washington State)

Not really it's just one of the ones that stuck in peoples heads.
It was successful with children that's why it made it so far.
It was part of my childhood and while i may not enjoy the show anymore i can still remember the story.
Personally my only interest with it is the abridged series.

Also what's Dragon Ball GT? I've never heard of this before <_<
GT is the "Milk the Cash Cow, not-quite Franchise Killer" that turned Goku into a kid again, and Akira Toriyama was not involved in it.
