I second your hate on head bobbing, but not because it looks stupid. It gives me motion sickness. Just about every first person game where the view bobs or even the gun directly in front of me bobs turns me into a nausesous, head pain riddled mess withtin 10 to 15 minutes and it doesn't go away for at least a half hour. I've actually had to return or give up on games because of this. I have used motion sickness medicine and/or seabands and they seem to help but I'd rather not have to find a way around being violently ill because of a stupid looking feature.

Weird, the shotgun in Doom 3 was probably my mot used weapon. With how close quarters the game was I found it extremely efficient. It was loads better than the machine gun anyways.
Also am I the only one who actually enjoyed Doom 3?
I still use the Shotgun extensively in Doom 3 (I'd estimate about 40-50% of my total kills are with the Shotgun). It has power (and the most plentiful ammo, by far), it's just that compared to real-life shotguns, or even the shotguns from the previous Doom games, it's HILARIOUSLY inaccurate.
You have to get into point-blank range to get the most out of it. Good thing most of the game has imps and zombies jumping out of closets and maintenance shafts.

And don't knock the Machinegun too much. It's extremely effective against Lost Souls, Cherubs (the baby-bug things), Ticks and Cacodemons (pop the thunderballs they belch just as they leave their mouth).

I guess that explains why I have been licking my screen when playing those games. That seems like a huge waste of bacon.

Wow. That does sound terrible.

The way you wrote it makes it sound worse than even what you say in the comic.

I don't have a problem with motion blur in and of itself, but it needs to be a very subtle effect. If it's subtle enough that you don't notice it, it really can make the game look slightly better. The problem is that studios feel the need to go way overboard with everything, as if every little effect is top priority and needs the player's attention at all times.

P.S. Thanks

I assume you're talking about the Silent Hill HD collection with the Konami jab there, because the Metal Gear Solid HD collection is pretty objectively great.

Also I like motion blur. It's not necessary, but it's a cool visual technique and more accurate simulates the human eye. The main reason FEAR 2 looks so much better than FEAR 1 is the addition of motion blur. However the option should always be there to turn it off, because I hear it makes many people sick.

Though I had forgotten just how hilariously awful the shotgun in Doom 3 was.
So much of that game takes place in extreme close-quarters that they had to adjust its accuracy, just so that it wouldn't dominate everything.

Still, they have the tech to traverse between Earth and Mars, yet their shotgun is about as accurate as a blunderbuss.

I quite like Doom 3. I don't think it's a Doom game in the sense that it seems completely separate to Dooms 1, 2, 64 and Final Doom, but on its own it's pretty good I think. Besides, id have a habit of a franchise going in several separate directions at once (how many different universes are there in the Quake series?)

What was the point of releasing Painkiller with better graphics if they cut more than half of the content? Did they get tired halfway-through?

- How many levels do we have Charlie?
- 14.
- Still 20 more left? No way. Lets release this right now, I am bored of updating graphics...

Anyone thinking of buying this because you never tried it before, just don't.

As the article said, get the black edition for much cheaper. In my country I've seen it in bargain bins, for about 3 or 4 dollars. Get yourself a pizza and a drink with the money you save sit down and enjoy this kickass game.
You will not have problems with the slightly old graphics, while your having a blast through great levels, with great music while "murdering tons of dudes", I mean a great variety of demons hell has to offer.

Motion blur is terrible. It is interesting to see your reaction and compare it to Ben Kuchera who raved about the remake. I really liked the first Painkiller and still play it sometimes but I have no interest to play a better yet shittier version.

I never get why motion blur is a thing. Just... why? Why the hell does it exist? And why do they make the fov so low on the PC? It's fine when you're sitting far away from the tv on a console, but up close on the PC? Increase it for fuck's sake.

I'd also like to take this moment to hate on head-bobbing. Because when I think immersive , I think of the screen bouncing up and down like you're walking in a fucking bouncy-castle.
I seriously don't know what to do when confronted with options for pc games nowadays. Motion Blur by definition is ruining an otherwise crystal clear vista. But it adds realism!(?) Head bobbing lets me feel like I'm really running. Weapon shaking, landing viewshake, mouse smoothing. And most of them are so minute it's imperciptible either way for me, so I don't know what they even mean.

The last frame of this comic is awesome. Just on its own it could be a meme or emote-pic.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, what's with all the hate for Doom 3? True, it's not like the previous Dooms, but it was still an awesome game. I believe it was in his Painkiller video that Yahtzee said Doom 3 "... turned off the lights, tripped over the coffee table, bonked its head, and forgot it wasn't System Shock." But I don't need the 3D gimmicks, like FOV (what's that stand for?) or motion blur; just let me shoot stuff!

Wait: 3D? D3? Spooky.

and if you choose not to include a FOV option as a "design choice", because people getting headaches and nausea is just so much more hilarious (yes Treyarch, I'm looking at you)
Funny - Treyarch ARE the guys, which give CoD the FoV-Slider. Only up to 80 in BO1 and BO2, but they give it one.
Now Infinity Wards on the other hands...

Field of View. Basically, the angle of your characters view. A FoV of 90 is considered a good standard for PC, 80 the bare minimum. Lower could cause headaches for some people, FAR lower WILL cause 'em.
Going higher than 90 should be still an option.
And yes, it's needed to allow to change it to a reasonable setting. Or, if you lock it, lock it at a reasonable high setting.

Is Erin Stout supposed to be British?

When I read dialogue, I have to give it a voice. So it bothers me that I don't know whether she has a British or Yankee accent.

I almost never used anything else BUT the shotgun when I played Doom 3 the first time, it's a good weapon for when something pops out unexpectedly and firing at it on reflex before it registers, and it kills almost every enemy in the game in 1 shot if you're point blank, and since most enemies rush you, that's easy enough.

I don't understand the hate for Doom 3 either. The previous Dooms were just mindless shooters, fun but it gets boring after a while. Doom 3 added a creepy and dark atmosphere, and an actual storyline and context for what you're doing, thus an actual point to playing the game, what's not to like?

I've never liked head bobbing either, I don't understand how they thought that it was in any way desirable to anyone not to mention realistic. I don't know about everybody else, but whether I'm walking or running my head doesn't bob all that much if at all most of the time. Besides, head bobbing makes aiming, firing, and so on accurately while moving impossible.

As for the other visual effects, I find most of them to be annoying and makes it more difficult to see the game more often than not. Luckily, they're usually able to be turned off.

When I made my Doom 3 Mod [http://www.gamefront.com/files/3839450/Doom__True_Survival__a_Doom3_Mod], the ridiculous spread of the shotgun was one of the first things I fixed. Seriously, that thing had more spread at 10 feet than real shotguns have at 100.

Quite honestly, I have yet to see motion blur handled well in any game; it seems to like to "overreact", which basically turns ALL motion into blur. And the ridiculously tight FOV angles games seem fond of these days make everything feel cramped (and the fact that half the screen is taken up by a ridiculously detailed weapon model helps none, either). My real field of view is 180 degrees; we accept 90 degrees in games due to technical limitations- why are we trying to make it worse?

Huh, y'know, I always really liked motion blur (or, the concept anyway). I actually, JUST found out it was one of those "infamous" features in modern video games quite recently. I mean, I remember Yahtzee shitting on it one time, I think, but he's Yahtzee; I didn't think the sentiment was this common. Huh, hearn something new every day.

I always find it interesting coming across pet-peeves that I never really gave a 2nd though t--

Like in minecraft on the 360, where as you move the screen lurches up and down in time with your movement. Its supposed to simulate how the vast majority of humans walk like chickens.
When I went to play that game at a friends house, it made me sick within about 2 minutes. (fortunately you can turn it off) FOV does too, on the PC I play with mine set at 'quake pro' cause any other makes me sick.
