Let me put it this way...

The absolute worst stuff from the 80's is better than all of the rap and hip hop in the world combined.

Unless we are talking the stuff Wierd Al does. I like him.
Can we say NOSTALGIA FILTER. Keep an open mind. Music didn't peak at the precise moment you were most vulnerable to sappy love songs. I'm just here for the music.
I grew up in the 90's. The stuff that was popular at the time didn't appeal to me, so I listened to the oldies station. I learned to love the stuff from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, but was never fond of the music that was from my generation. Then I heard rap and hip hop, and my first thought was "What the hell is this?! I can't even understand what they're saying, and the music sounds terrible".

But then again, that is just my view on things. Which is kinda, you know, how opinions work. I don't look down on people due to the music they listen to, but I am just as valid in saying rap sucks as other people are saying that it's great.

I love Hip Hop, been listening to it since I was kid. There's a lot of ignorance shrouding it, people really should say "the majority of rappers I hear are autotuned morons rapping about money, bitches and bling", people seem to forget the very important "I hear" part though and assume everyone is like what they hear on the radio or on MTV. It's not just that either, I've noticed people need to state their distaste for rap all the time. I don't like metal, but I don't fucking proclaim it in every metal thread.

If you haven't heard of Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Aesop Rock, all of those big names in Underground Hip Hop then you don't really have much of an opinion on rap, you just have a biased viewpoint based entirely off your lack of research. I'm not saying people who haven't looked into rap don't know if they like it or not, some people prefer singing or whatever. I understand that, music is subjective, but don't say shit about all rap being the same. It's like me saying all metal sounds the same. I also dislike when people reference the Golden era of Hip Hop without knowing anything and then conclude that modern day Hip Hop is dead because a few opinions on Google said so, and it's cool to have opinions!

Ultimately I'm not that bothered though, I fucking love Hip Hop and it's actually quite funny to read some of the ignorant bullshit people spout out. Whilst everyone argues I'll be sat here, not giving a fuck, listening to this:

I want to hear the conversation Kanye West had with his producer about this album art.

"So what do you want, Kanye? A close up of you scowling with some guns all around?"

"Naw, man, put a mufuckin bear there."

"What?"

"Yeah, a bear. Or maybe just a fuckin dude in a bear outfit. Have him sittin his ass on some bench lookin all sad n shit. Maybe havin him wearin fuckin people clothes on top too."

"But why a bear?"

"Idunno man, maybe people'll think it's deep n shit."

In other news, that's probably the most meaningful song I've ever seen by Kanye West. He's just such a douche I like to keep as far away from him as possible.
Kanye has a lot of songs equally as good and/or better then this one. But for some reason a lot of people ignore that because he is an ass. In my opinion someone can be the biggest asshole ever but if they make good music then i'm going to listen to it.

The best quote i've heard someone say in reference to Kanye was that "He's almost as good as he thinks he is, and that's pretty damn good"

Well, I don't like the entire genre, so I'm probably a bit biased. Even so, I think every single mainstream rap/hip hop song and group sucks.

I'd rather listen to something else besides that pure auditory poison.
I tried to like it when I first found it, but in all good honesty I can't stand the stuff. If you like it, fine.
Just keep in mind that you're disturbing people around you when you put the bass up to full.

... Atmosphere is really good, as is K'naan...
I laugh because the argument in favour of rap is always the same one, Atmosphere and the entire Rhymesayers label at the forefront of it. There are no bad genres of music, only bad musicians. And I'm talking generally here because as soon as you start dividing every other music group into its own genre, we get into things that are too confusing for anyone but a jackass hipster to pretend to understand. The reason everyone thinks of rap as being shitty music is because there are no mainstream artists in the rap category. There are only stand-out simpletons talking about weed, guns, bitches, money, and fucking various things. Lil Wayne is nationally known because he is unorthodox with his actual rhymes, but his subject matter is still the same worthless garbage that we've seen time and time again.

The world forgets Tupac and we aren't getting another one, so this discussion is null. If you want a direct answer, it's because the mainstream is polluted.

Generally speaking I'm inclined to say there is a negative relation between the amount of half naked women shown in the clip, and the quality of the music.

Sorry, but that's just the way that particular genre is meant to be enjoyed (when done right). Same rules apply to listening to Metal with the volume on full. You miss out on an important piece of the music by doing away with the bass.

The problem with hip hop and rap isn't that they're bad genres of music (they're not), but rather that the most visible examples of the genres suck. Look at modern popular rap--many of the lyrics are chauvinistic, demeaning, mindless, generally unsavory, etc. However, beneath that crust of shit, there are plenty of artists who legitimately have something to say and can do so with skill and musicality. Like the OP points out, Atmosphere is a particularly good example (check out Yesterday or Guarantees if you want some proof that rap can be intelligent), and I would throw Sage Francis out there as another damn good example of someone who can handle a mic and can use it for something intelligent (see Gunz Yo, Slow Down Gandhi, The Best Of Times, or Conspiracy To Riot)--but be warned that he can be VERY political. So generally speaking, I think that hip hop (and more specifically rap) is a medium with a lot of potential that's getting wasted on Lil' Wayne and the like. There's some really, really cool stuff that nobody notices underneath the piles of drivel.

Finally, my advice to those that don't like rap: please stop just shitting on it without a second thought. Hip hop is a genre as diverse as rock, so it's difficult to definitively say "This is bad" unless you put in a lot of listening time. Besides, even if it's not for you, that doesn't make it all automatically bad--I'm not a particular fan of metal (much of it strikes me as pointlessly, boringly aggressive), but that does not mean that all metal is bad just because I don't like it. Please, extend the same sort of courtesy to hip hop.

I like you. You talk about things you understand fully instead of throwing in worthless two cents. I'm an advocate of underground rap, been into Rhymesayers and their affiliations for some time now, and I've been enjoying Common Market, Busdriver, and Cubbiebear lately. You have any recommendations on artists you think deserve more spread than they get?

That doesn't justify the fact that the ENTIRE CAR is resonating headache inducing sound waves that can be heard/felt over three blocks away.
Sacrificing the "full" experience is alright if you spare everyone around you the pains of having to listen to: BOOM BOOM BOOOOM BOOOM!!!! for the duration of the drive.

I like Eminem, and that's about it. This thread also reminds me of something I read once: "RAP = Retards Attempting Poetry". Not that I believe that, but it cracked me up and stil kinda does.

Undeniably so, but forcing everyone in a 40m radius to listen to your choice of music still makes you a dick.

Oh white people. You and your ignorance to rap!
Just kidding, but seriously, people here need to broaden their horizons!
I suggest De La Soul and Beastie Boys first, then delve into the superior music that is the hip-hop/rap genre.

Only recently I've given Rap and Hip-Hop a second chance. Mostly because of Adam Warrock, rap about nerdy things and comic books? Hell yes...I also may like the satisfaction of knowing most people in any given room with me haven't heard of it...

Ugh... this thread makes me upset.

Recently, I've been listening to very little other than hip-hop and various electronic stuff. I love everything from the mainstream stuff like Lil Wayne and Drake to stuff like... well, this:

You can find all kinds of different music within hip-hop, just like you can find different subgenres in metal and electronic. Whether it be the poppy sounds of Nicki Minaj or the deep raspy flow of Kendrick Lamar, rap and hip-hop can be fantastic.

hip and rap: oh look some people using crap around them to rhyme... oh look a song about bitches and hos. oh this ones about drugs. another about bitches and hos. THIS ones about some stupid thing where they repeat the same lines over and over... i could write better lyrics in my sleep. one about losing your man...girl...(insert person here)... one about a man BEATING a girl... oh hey an abusive girl. drugs. bitches and hos. getting drunk. getting drunk. getting drunk. getting drunk. getting CRUNK. bad english, bad english, bad english, bad english... gang sign gang sign gang sign.

so no, i dont hate rap and hip hop. i DESPISE it. the whole culture it sparked is SO asinine and testosterone driven it makes me sick.
Mind if I ask what genres of music you listen to? And you're sitting here calling the kettle black about the bad English.

Here's my contribution:

Adult Swim also has a CD that you can download for free which I recommend.

By the way, fans of the hip-hop genre, you have no reason to not own at least half of Atmosphere's discography.
How have I never heard of Atmosphere until now? I am about to spend so much money to remedy the lack of Atmosphere in my iTunes situation.
