How are they being greedy? they are stopping something that most people with half a brainstem know is bad.

If everyone downloaded illegally, the music/movie and even game industry would crumble.
Yes piracy is bad keep helping the developers and god speed
Don't worry, i will :)

I would rather see more effort put on those who make malware websites and files instead. This is the government still dragging their asses on electronic law. Big surprise.

What I want to know about this law is how it defines infringment. Will it just affect those peddling pirated material, or will it also affect things such as fanart or fanfiction? Companies generally don't sue fans for making fanstuff because going hulk on your fans for what amounts to making an homage to your work creates insanely bad PR.

But what would this law mean for the websites which host fanstuff?

So can they block this site because the users use images in their avatars that are copyrighted?

At first they'll claim they're trying to stop piracy, then they'll start shutting down sites critical of the government.
And then they'll be held to account to Congress or the Supreme Court. Checks a and Balances are the one saving grace of your political structure, in my opinion. Be glad you have them.

Well yeah. The internet moves fast, and is an incredibly complex thing to legislate for, as shown by the brouhaha around these actions. It's not really surprising they're struggling to handle it well- I doubt anyone could.

You know, unless they are independent developers, piracy doesn't really hurt them a great deal. It's sort of like how piracy doesn't really hurt musicians. It does hurt publishers and distributors, which have been fucking over customers for decades.

And truth be told most indie games don't seem to be pirated badly at all thanks to the likes of Steam. As for independent music and movies, the exposure probably helps them more than it hurts; I remember a buddy of mine who lives off being a musician was pumped because so many people had pirated his work.

Don't these guys have better things to do? Like stopping illegal aliens from entering the country and taking horrifically needed American jobs from American citizens? Or something? ... anyone?

Yet games with big advertising sale great while games with little advertising barely sales. Have you heard of Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs. DarkDeath EvilMan for the psp (if you have and played it your just awesome), now compare that to the new Call of Duty or Halo games. I'm not saying piracy is good cause a lot of people just use lame excuses to why they do it, while others do have a reason and it's legit.

ACTA. If you haven't heard of it, look it up because it is rather frightening.

Also OH NOES! THEY SHUT DOWN DOZENS OF PIRATING WEBSITES?! THAT ONLY LEAVES 34 MILLION MORE.

Really though, fighting piracy is a worthless venture, it will continue to thrive as long as the internet exists, and even if you get rid of the current internet and force us all to use heavily monitored, privately controlled, wired connections people will still create underground wireless ones.

They would be better off figuring out some way to use piracy to their benefit. Just like they'd be better off selling weed rather then wasting billions of dollars and ruining lives fighting a substance that is less dangerous then beer.

Because those actually hurt the corporations....

Yikes! I sound like a hippie, but it's true: it's all about the money. Just look at the American prison system, except for the federal prisons, most state institutions are run by private companies....

Problem is fire in this instance would be killing the entire Internet and frankly the US government, nor any government around the world really, really doesn't want that to happen, it would make the GFC look like a boom time.
Never under estimate the stupidity of a politician with an agenda to push and an enforcement agency to back him up.

You'd think no-one would have been dumb enough to try and ban alcohol entirely in the US, but, well...

Pirate Bay is still running, so I fail to see what this accomplished.
Pirate bay has survived so many attempts to take it down that it's just getting silly.
But the idea that ISP's would have to block it for everyone... that may work.

Do these groups honestly think before they do these things? Pirates will just adapt and move, as usual. Unless you impose draconian laws onto the internet, there's no way to deal with it. You can't stop the signal.

I'm more confused that Homeland Security is doing this, when they could be, I don't know, doing important things.

But hey...it's not like I have to live in this country of yours so...keep up with your cool stories, bros.
This is true for now (hooray for the UK) but if this appears successful in America, expect it to be rolled out globally.

If the only thing this accomplishes is that people who pirate are more inconvenieced and have to go elsewhere, GOOD! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Piracy is illegal and anybody who supports is breaking the law, no matter how good they think their logic is.
