For reference:
Vertical=Left and Right
Horizontal=Top and Bottom

I'm not sure but most games usually only have one or the other. The only game I remember where you can switch it up is Turok 2 for N64, some games to me need horiz, other vert.

I always get Vertical split screen in gears 2 when I want horizontal because its a wider field of view. When in Gears multiplayer do you need to look up and down a long ways? It makes huge blind spots left and right :/ Which would you prefer for shooting games, racing games, adventure what have you .Because different games need different layouts.

Another thing that bugs me is 3 player split screen, though its rare some games like Banjo Tooie gave player 1 a whole damn half while the other two guys get fourths :/ Player 1 was always the owner of the game when I used to play with friends.

Nice thread even though it's not had much attention, I prefer horizontal split screen and I agree that 3 player splitscreen is a pain in the arse, although I did play a game that had it split into thirds cant remember the game though, also have you seen the splitscreen on the next lego indy game?

Depends on the game.

If it's a racer game, i'd take vertical since up/down rarely matters.
Dunno about FPS, prolly horizontal, since i havea wide-screen tv, so i think you'd still have enough "side-vision" on each screen.

Preferably the option to choose.

Yeah I guess its just a slow day. And no I haven't, I tend to stay away from lego games just because I don't enjoy them.

Always horizontal. Vertical makes massive blind spots, no matter the game.

I remember some old PS2 sims game had diagonal split-screen. God that was awful.

Horizontal, especially on FPS
I'm fine with any division on any other style

I gotta say definitly Horizontal for most of the stuff I play. its just better having a wider field of view. How about those 3 person splits? How many varieties do those suckers come in?

I remember those!

OT: Always horizontal for me no matter the game. Vertical totally throws me off. Dunno why, but it does.

I prefer horizontal, because vertical peripheral vision isn't that important in most games (Flight sims notwithstanding).

Horizontal FTW! Vertical doesn't give a good enough field of vision. Plus most things that attack tend to be on the same level as you so having the extra height of screen is not as important as having the width.

I like using horizontal. I think it may be because vertical seems more narrow-visioned while horizontal is more wide-visioned. And it pays to see to the left and right, however mental it may be.

Horizontal. I suppose some racing games might be OK vertical, but other than that, Horizontal all the way.

Side note, the hell is wrong with the COD5 splitscreen? (possibly cod4 too, haven't played it, can't be sure.) It just gives you tiny little boxes and leaves the rest of the screen unused. I mean COME ON!!!

actually horizontal is more like the proportions of widescreen wich is more like natural vision so i guess horizontal is even better than not split, except for the size.

Horizontal because in most games all most everything is allready at eye level so having more vision up and down is not really nessicary.

Horizontal, COD WaW has a crappy split screen with one on the top right and one on the bottom left. AGGG
