Vertical=Left and Right
Horizontal=Top and Bottom
I'm not sure but most games usually only have one or the other. The only game I remember where you can switch it up is Turok 2 for N64, some games to me need horiz, other vert.
I always get Vertical split screen in gears 2 when I want horizontal because its a wider field of view. When in Gears multiplayer do you need to look up and down a long ways? It makes huge blind spots left and right :/ Which would you prefer for shooting games, racing games, adventure what have you .Because different games need different layouts.
Another thing that bugs me is 3 player split screen, though its rare some games like Banjo Tooie gave player 1 a whole damn half while the other two guys get fourths :/ Player 1 was always the owner of the game when I used to play with friends.
