This is a topic all about what you think would be good for a horror game.

Some of mine:
If you are going to do a co-op game, to reduce the whole 'at least I got my buddies' kind of thing give each player (or only one unlucky player) hallucinations which vary from moving shadows all the way to when he looks back at one of his friends he sees that they are scary monsters as well. (Or just use sanity points, an extremely good concept that should be used more often IMO)

When you die and go back to a checkpoint, change up a few things. Maybe move some things around, even if it just makes the player say "I don't remember this being here before"

So have some fun thinking up of good horror ideas.

The ability to take ANY of your surroundings and use it as a weapon
And by that I mean (DAMN YOU HUBILUB your avatar is distracting me and probably going to give me a seizure) you can bloody well cut down a tree and carve a shiv if you want.
The twist would be, your opponents can too. Oh, and your shadow wants to kill you. Avoid seeing it at all costs. Also, sanity meters FTW!

Horror Tip #1: DO NOT GIVE THE PLAYER A GUN
Just compare any Resident Evil to, say, Fatal Frame, Clock Tower, Trilby's Notes...they're all scarier.

You actually start the game gravely injured and have to complete it while your character slowly bleeds out from a sucking chest wound. The baddies in the game are attracted to the scent of your blood, so most of the game is attempting to stop the bleeding, cleaning up your own blood, masking its scent, laying false trails, and trying to hide...
Unfortunately moving too fast and exerting yourself reopens and enlarges your wound, but you continue to try to escape fast enough in order to get proper medical attention before it is too late.

Anyone bleeding continuously of any moderate wound would probably die within an hour...

Conversely, this does give rise to another thought. There are a lot of much more realistic enemies that would hit home to us than the 6-limbed faceless abominations we see in horror games. Example might simply be a hitman out to kill the player, who has just had his leg mangled by nearby machinery, and is screaming expletives at you as he looks for you, while holding a very loud gun.

I kinda like this idea, apart from the masking ur scent/covering your tracks/laying false trails. I dont think a horror should be a run and gun, but i'd like it to move a little quicker than how i imagine that playing. other than that sounds good ^_^

True, but short but sweet works sometimes if the game carries the plot and intensity behind it. Portal for example wasn't particularly long. :)

how about this for a horror game idea
Your in an underground church and your character says, "Somethings not right here" then theres a creaking noise from the cross at the top of the church. Then the "Christ nailed on the cross slowly turns his head to look at you. He then rips his limbs of the cross, leaving one bloody hand pinned to the cross. All of a sudden the light turn off. You scramble to turn on your flashlight. You turn it on only to find ur friend has been eaten by the unholy christ. You pull out your revolver to get revenge on the thing that killed your friend. You shoot the foul beast four times. It falls on the floor moaning. All of a sudden the floor starts to rock under your feet. you lose your balance and fall to the ground. As you heave yourself onto your feet you discover the injured demon has vanished, to be replaced by your friend, blood oozing out of four gunshot wounds. you start to sob as you realise you have shot your only living friend.
so what do you think?

happy now?

Morose as hell. But the light thing seems like a pretty badass idea, and the twist. Zombies are a tad overused though, ya' know. Maybe if the thing you shot was the jesus.

A few neat story hooks and flashy game mechanics don't really make a great game anyway. It would be nice to see a new horror game with a detailed engrossing plot that is less centered on gunning down massive amounts of enemies and instead actually just surviving, figuring out what is happening, and getting the heck out of there.

Dont know about anyone else, but I get freaked out by anything as much as a dark corridor with flickering lights and something making that sound that the regenerators in Resident Evil 4 make. I had nightmeres the first time i experienced that, but hey, i'm scared of bugs the size of an M&M.

Randoms, that could probably work in conjuction with a sanity meter. It's amazing, if game companies tried, actually tried, they could makea game that would make you crap yourself in fear every few seconds. But no, they're not going to.
I also have another idea. but its twisted. you play as someeone who has contracted a virus that makes their skin decay making them look like "Zombies." Your appearance makes humans put your city under quarantine. and you have to run from the military trying to find a way past the quartine. its like the reverse of a normal horror game
oh and thanks for the compliment robbins

oh yeah and my first idea would have a sanity meter. In my opinion one of the best horror games would have to be "Dark Corners Of The Earth" cause it had a sanity meter and it worked it was by Bethesda which might explain its awesomeness.

Above all things a horror game needs a good atmosphere and a sense of dread. The player must always feel venerable, even when they are in a place they are familiar with (like their home for example). They must always be unsure of what might unfold and the less they know, the scarier the situation becomes.

You reveal your worst fears to the game, and it creates it personnaly for your fears.

The whole game is your worst nightmare. And doesn't help you overcome it.

Much.

You're a zombie with newly attained consciousness, striving for survival against mindless zombies and armed humans. You are completely alone. Fighting battles causes fatigue; your mind wanders and you lose control from time to time. Each step you take you have to carefully balance your physical and mental energies.
