Its that time again Australia, time to vote for the best song of 09.

For those not in the know, youth radio station JJJ hold a hottest 100 countdown every year.
Yes, and it's garbage.

There's no excuse for listening to JJJ in Australia. Every single major city has a kick-ass independent radio station that leaves the horrible, worthless "get a song you love and play it until you despise it" JJJ for dead. PBS in Melbourne, ZZZ in Brisbane, 3D-Radio in Adelaide, etc etc...

...and all these stations have their own Top 100 countdowns too, which always turn up far more interesting and worthwhile music than JJJ.

I haven't listened to a whole lot that's come out this year, but I know both the Decemberists and Neko Case have released new albums this year, and they are always good, and I really need to track those down.

Oh, and I took a listen to some of the tracks off of They Might Be Giants' new album Here Comes Science, and "Roy G. Biv" put a big smile on my face (yes, it's a children's album, so what?).

Almost every single song on the radio is garbage, especially the radio stations where I live where they play the same terrible rap song at least twice an hour. That's why Pandora is my friend.

My top 5 list for this year is:
5: Obfuscation by Between the Buried and Me
4: Resurrection Blvd. by Devildriver
3: Hurt Feelings by Flight of the Conchords
2: Bloodlines by Dethklok
1: A Nightmare to Remember by Dream Theater

And you won't hear a single one of those on the radio.

You need to get a better radio station. All of those artist and a few of those songs were played on JJJ this year.

Not to praise JJJ as a god too much, I'm just saying that there is good radio out there.

"Hey 4ZZZ, can you play my song" "Lolkay!"

4ZZZ irks me, perhaps I have been unlucky but the only times I've listened to that station there has been horrible, poor quality punk or hardcore music.

Are you kidding me? All the radio stations in my area just play the same terrible rap songs over and over. Either that or the same country song over and over.

Actually, in my opinion, this was a great year for music. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Dream Theater, and Megadeth all reminded us why they are great. Some great efforts from Muse, ADTR, NOFX not to mention the emergance of 2 great new supergroups. here's my list:

1. Black Gives Way to Blue -Alice in Chains

1a. Amongst the Waves -Pearl Jam

3. Wither -Dream Theater

4. Uprising -Muse

5. Dialectic Chaos/This Day We Fight! -Megadeth

6. Downfall of us All -A Day to Remember

7. My Lucky Day -Bruce Springsteen

8. Soap on a Rope -Chickenfoot

9. Blasphemy (The Victimless Crime) -NOFX

10. New Fang -Them Crooked Vultures

The only two albums I have really listened to from this year are life starts now by three days grace and dear agony by breaking benjamin. So just get 10 songs from those two albums and that will be my top 10.

I agree that 4ZZZ does favour crappy hardcore these days, a shame. Probably the best community radio in Australia is Adelaide's 3D-Radio, the DJs vary in quality and professionalism but the sheer musical variety on that station is jaw-droppingly phenomenal and the repetition factor is quite low as they don't have playlists. Apart from classical music, I can't think of a single genre that isn't substantially covered by them somewhere in their weekly schedule. They stream from their own website too (www.threedradio.com) so you can listen to it anywhere in the world. I know I sound like a fucking ad but it really is that good, people I know who are musicians who have have toured all over the western world have not found a better radio station. It's what JJJ should be but isn't, never was, and never will be.

It's between 'Ain't No Rest for the Wicked' by Cage the Elephant or 'The Czar' by Mastodon. Also, 'Hordes of Chaos' by Kreator.

There were very few good-great songs that came out this year, especially with pop music. It all sounds pretty much the same to me.

I think kreator released an album this year, so my choice is whatever the single off of hordes of chaos was. Oh, and lamb of god did as well, so maybe something of theirs.

...I rarely listen to the radio >>

State Radio's 3rd LP called Let it Go came out this year. I really like the album, though Year of the Crow and Us Against the Crown were, I felt, stronger albums. I think, though, the album just needs some time to grow on my. Off the album my top 3 were:
3. Calling all Crows
2. Still & Silent
1. Knights of Bostonia

P.O.S. of Doomtree also came out with a new album this year. I haven't heard too much of it, but I've very much enjoyed what I have. Though, from what I've heard Ipecac Neat remains his strongest.

Octahedron by the Mars Volta remained about as disappointing as Amputecture and Bedlam and Goliath were for me as well. It's a sad that the band has slowly lost their touch since they quit heroine. Not that I'm not happy for them, but, to me, Cedric and Omar were at their strongest right around Relationship of Command and Deloused in the Comatorium.

I haven't been aware of the releases of my other favorite artists, in 2009. This is a good reminder for me to go do that.
