Think maybe you need to realise that certain games are important to you but not necessarily to others.

To this point in my life I can tell you that if its a console only game then I've probably never played it possibly even ever heard of it.
Most of my friends aren't gamers so them not knowing the joys of Doom/Deus Ex and such isn't really a shock.
You say "I've never heard of Ocarina of Time", I say "Son I am disappoint".
Whether you like or dislike nintendo games, OoT is one of the greatest games ever made.
Hell, its my counter-argument against people who say "FINAL FANTASY VII IS THE BEST GAME EBER!", and they usually stfu when I bring it up.

Doom and Deus Ex don't hold a candle to OoT.
Having never played Ocarina or Final Fantasy I'll take your word that you enjoyed them immensely.
I just don't get why you would assume that everyone else should have played them.

I met a dude who never played Super Mario Bros.

Oddly enough he's a Sony fanboy who has almost a fetish for technical specs. No suspension of disbelief in this one.

"Why do the Miis not have arms?"-Wii Sports
"Why can't you look down the sights."-Half Life 2
"Why is it Mushrooms? Where's the nitro?"-Mario Kart

You and me both.

Also, I have never played any Half-Life game, let the hatred commence!
You're not missing out in terms of Half-Life, but Goddammit you should see the Matrix!

I consider all of those games to be extremely well known games, and meeting someone who has not played them is unheard of.
I have not played Ocarina of Time, or any Zelda game for that matter.

No you haven't. You can't have.

Unless he was an Amish 3-year old.

EDIT: Didn't see the rest of the thread. Will now read that.

OT: I met someone on this very site who'd never heard of the Metroid series. At all.

...

In all fairness, though, he apparently lived in a country where it is extremely difficult to get hold of games, period.

Because I don't understand how someone can say "I play games. The games I play are good.", yet not playing a game that is revered as being one of the greatest games ever.

Haven't played Ocarina of Time. Didn't have the console when it was new. Don't care enough about it to get it now.
it's really stupid that you got put on probation for your post in the other thread

OT: when people haven't played KOTOR my mind breaks a little

also games like tetris. and if you have a PC, you probably should own TF2, or at least played it at some point

Yes I have, during my gap year I went and visited a number of third world countries and some of the children had never heard of or seen television.

Oh I see. Third world countries, you should have said so.

Poor fellers.

One of my friends is, like me, very fond of JRPG's.

And he has never played Final Fantasy X.

My mind was blown.

I had a GF who never saw The Wizard of Oz. Because, I shit you not, "It had a positive depiction of a witch". I dumped her crazy zealot ass right there. The movie was released in 1939.

I dont think I ever really met someone, but I do remember someone met me, asked me if I played Halo and I said no, then asked if I played Mass Effect, and I said no, then asked me if I played Bioshock or Assassin's creed and I said no.

He looked like his mind was gonna melt and explode at the same time.

I'm not into the FPS genre, so it's easier to name the ones I have played.

-Star Wars: Dark Forces (had it as a 12 year old kid)
-Goldeneye 64
-The World is Not Enough (also 64, and I remember liking it better than Goldeneye)
-Turok 2
-about one hour of BioShock
-Team Fortress 2
-Some war games, but I can't remember which ones. A friend of mine always had them on his PS2. I think at least one was a call of Duty.

So that means I haven't played...
-a Doom, Quake, or Wolfenstein
-A Halo
-a call of Duty past 3 (though I'm not sure which ones of the first three I played)
-a Battlefield
-Deus Ex
-a Killzone
-a Half-Life
-and the list goes on...

The only Final Fantasy I've played is the latest one (13). I am just now trying to get into JRPGs though.

I can finally say I've played a God of War game and an Uncharted game (I'm going through the first one now) because I got my first Playstation console in December

Oooh, this is going to be a long list.
Never watched:
- Any Star Wars
- Matrix
- Alien/Predator/AvP or whatever
- Avatar
- Kill Bill
- Borat or Bruno
- Nightmare on Elm Street
- The Usual Suspects
- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
- I watched E.T. but I was a kid and I don't remember anything
- Toy Story
There are a lot more but I can't remember.

Never played:
- any Zelda game that isn't Link to the Past
- any Mario that isn't the first one
- Halo (any)
- Deus Ex
- KOTOR
- MMOs
- Half-Life
- Final Fantasy
- Actually the only consoles I have/had are the NES and the PC so that narrows it down and I admit emulating LttP but only because there was no SNES in my country ever and there are certainly no Wii's. And I played like 5% of the game before I deleted it.

My gentlemen I present you with a task to top this: 98% of the people that surround me have never heard of an XBOX (360), also haven't watched Star Wars, think there's only a Nintendo game console (no Wiis, Gamecubes, SNESes, 64s) just Nintendo, gamers only play Counter-Strike 1.6 and play PES (there are two guys I know of that have played an RPG, one is my brother, second is his friend)...

This is getting too long.

I found a major flaw in your statement. You dont seem to understand how common sense works. The person plays games and the games that he plays are good. Now just because they dont care or havnt played something that a very vocal community can stop sucking off is meaningless.

Here is one that will blow your mind, I thought ff7 sucked and wasnt really a fan of ocarina of time, infact both bored me enough that I never bothered to finish either. Not everybody shares the same taste in games as you, I thought that would be extremely obvious on a forum like this.

Here is another one, I have never played KOTOR or any other star wars game. This is because they dont interest me in the slightest bit.
Video games are very context sensative. Play Space Invaders in the late 70s and it's the most amazing thing ever. Experience it for the first time a decade later and you probably won't have the same experience. I'm old enough to have experienced Pac-Mania first hand and count Pac-Man Fever as the first album I ever bought with my own money. I can't imagine trying to explain this to some even a decade younger.

As for OoT, my eyes glaze over the second I heard fantasy RPG. Not the standard fantasy setting of D&D fame, but close enough to run into my anti-fantasy bias. Checking it out on Wikipedia, it's one of the most influential RPGs of all time and I have no doubt it's a quality game... but I have no interest in playing it. I hadn't even heard of it until about six months ago, as it was outside my interests.

I have no idea what the fuck is Dr.Who. I suppose its some brit with timetravelling telephonebooth, fighting against low budget sockpuppets with jolly old spitty remarks.

Oh right, games... I cant finish Mass Effects nor Dragon Age.

Honestly, I've never had that "how can you not have played/read/watched that" thought. With the exception of Star Wars, I don't hold it against people if they haven't played/read/watched something I like.
