It's weird, because I was playing PC games long before I felt the industry of PC gaming, probably because I was playing on ancient hand-me-down systems like the Commodore 128. Had a library of games but it was an experience just like a console (and at the time, just as silly and glitchy).
When I was a teenager my buddies dragged me to an internet cafe, something I'd always thought was, well, where you went to get online. It was a small, dark, smoker-filled, Korean-owned place and just about everyone in the room was playing this FPS arena game called Counter Strike. That was a new worldly experience.

I'm not. I'll get into PC gaming when rigs that preform better than consoles cost less than $1000.
Omitting the monitor (console doesn't come with a TV screen), an intelligent custom build at $1000 can be considerably powerful. For reference, the backbone of my PC is from 2010, was average at the time and less than $1000; it will run Witcher 3, GTA V and Fallout 4. You don't need to spend a load of money, just very specifically when it comes to PC parts. Retail PCs will kill your bank account and are often configured (and designed) stupidly.
