For one thing, its filmed in the US, where gun control laws are pretty loose. Next, they get money from sponsers and Discovery - the station that hosts them - that can be used to buy the weapons. Third, they have worked out deals with military branches and shooting ranges to use their toys if a myth calls for it.

Its not exactly rockey science here.

The same way I do: nip down the store, ask for a handgun (claim that you're only browsing), and do the quadruple-callsign dance (Iron and Copper/Chill out boy, A bright cold day in April/Ah, Mr. American, The sun is shining/But the Ice is Slippery/Are You who I think you are/Are you who I think you are), and have the shopkeep open up his special cabinet. Then I go to the shelf on the back wall and pick my favorite.

I think the more viable question would be: "How do they get their hands on high velocity explosives."

To which the answer (as well as the answer to your question) would be: Money, and deals.

They get their hands on High velocity explosives, Fully automatic weapons, and everything else crazy that they use in these ways:

None of them have any legal problems. Therefore they are able to obtain legally permits to use such equipment.

They are funded by the Discovery Channel. Therefore money is not an object.

They are on Television. Therefore any help they may need including outside experts is easily attainable.

those of you saying "because they're in the states." are fucking retarded and don't know a god damn thing about gun laws. they get to use the full auto stuff because police forces sometimes have full auto guns, and they're willing to work together.

Ah, there ya go.

I live in the states, and it's still illegal for civ's to own fully automatic weapons for the most part, hence the question.

They probably don't "get" fully automatic weapons, but have some kind of agreement with local police forces and/or military branches to let them try out these kinds of weapons under supervision of an expert.

They have the same thing with explosives where they often get that bomb expert from the FBI to help them out with their experiments.

Actually, they are based in California, so the minigun they used once was illegal, so they did that part of the show in Arizona or Nevada...

They just borrow machine guns from people who have them. Ex-military, police, citizens with the right permits and disposable income, etc. The only guns MythBusters actually owns are a couple of handguns, some shotguns, and an M1 Garand (last time I checked). They borrow the rest.

If yOu paid any damn attention you'd know.

They have professionals who aren't on air watching them.

Holy shit that's so complicated!

edit: And they're professionals themselves.

It isn't actually illegal to own full-auto weapons in the USA, certain states and counties may ban it but not Nevada that is a few hours drive away from San Fransisco where Mythbusters is filmed. Over there the gun laws are extremely lax, basically only Federal law is there which may be long and complex with lots of paperwork but it's possible.

Also the San Fransisco police department is always looking for good press, they have allowed them use of weapons at various times especially for firearms myths they may very well want to know the truth about themselves. Law enforcement can own and use anything the military uses as long as the chief of police signs off on it.
