I usually read, listen to music or play a no-brainer game (something like CoD).
Beats my old approach; worrying inscesantly didn't work...

Oh god, don't talk to me about overthinking. I'm afraid I can't really help with the loss of sleep, the only time it kept me awake was when I was really depressed for a few months and that's gone now, so while I still tend to think so much it hurts sometimes it doesn't keep me from sleeping. Like someone else said I'd suggest going for a run or something, doing exercise can both take your mind off stuff and tire you out.

Video games or the Esacpist with loud music in my headphones.
Nothing clears your head like completely cutting contact with the world around you (you know, except you folks on the internet).

Hey guys, this is something that's been bugging me,, how do you get something off your mind?
When something happens I have this thing where I look at it from every possible angle and dissect the hell out of it to fully understand.
Say someone hit their dog, I'd wonder why the did it, what makes them think it's okay, when they decided they were above another mammal, if it carries over to anything else, etc.

The only thing is, sometimes I can't stop thinking about the subject, and then it just gets to be too much.
The REAL sucky thing is, if my brain is actively thinking about something, I can't sleep, which leads me to rely on Valium or weed or something to knock me out after about 4 hours of staring at the ceiling.

Does this ever happen to anyone else? And if it does [hell, if it doesn't] is there any advice I can take away from this.
Go about life as normal. It eventually leaves. If I actively try and do something then it makes me think of it more.

Maybe I should take up Warcraft again (not WoW, just good ol' Warcraft). That year was a total blur,, I couldn't have been thinking much then lol.

I'd say this one pretty much sums it up, but I'm still in transition to the 'back to normal' status. It's not as bad as it was, but it's still bugging me.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Betcha they'll work :D

Whenever I want to forget about something, I start playing a game.

Normally a game that makes you think like Portal or Legend of Zelda.

I think you may have an anxiety disorder if this happens regularly.
Indeed. Also, I just play games. Whether it be an FPS or WoW or something. Takes your mind right off it I find.

Beat yourself with a hammer but you'll never really get rid of the voices in your head

Instead of staring at the ceiling, write it down. Create something easy to write, like a journal of your thoughts. You might be surprised at the amount of writing material you come up with.

Watch Ghost in The Shell. That'll give you something to think about...unless you're actively trying to get potential existential existance and political theory off your mind. Then it won't help much.

I use a visualisation technique. I focus on the thought associating it with an image then I let the image dissolve in my minds eye. This method properly wouldn't be good a removing emotional trauma, you'd just repress the feelings, but is good at putting thoughts aside until you want to concentrate on them.

I'm very good at blocking thought, it's fantastic for when I want to ignore everything around me.

I imagine over-the-top and exaggerated fight scenes, usually involving my current surroundings. You'd be surprised as to what kind of damage you could imagine in places like grocery stores, parks, or even parking lots.

I take a walk, have a drink or smoke. If all else fails I bang my knuckles against the wall or workout. Actually, I am really pissed right now so I think I'll go and do the latter.
