Don't get AIM. It's POS software.

I can't do anything to make my computer work right.
So I'll tell you how I made it usable.

Internet Explorer 7 wouldn't run if it had a gun to it's back, and for some reason I can't uninstall it. If you can, upgrade to firefox or Chrome or something and don't use it.

Any Apple product has no business on a windows machine. It slows down windows and confuses it. They never worked well for me, so I got rid of them. iTunes and Quicktime must go.

The other problems my computer has are just bizarre little quarks that make me want to throw it out a window into rush hour traffic.

Edit:

NO GOOGLE TOOLBAR. KILL IT WITH FIRE.

I keep my computer running using duct tape and bailing wire. Seriously though, don't run too much stuff on it all the time and you'll be fine. Constantly putting it to a lot of work generates a lot of heat and slowly kills your PC.

I use black magic, combined with the power of sacricifing virgins.
Seriously, never use any Apple product.
And the fact that I have to treat my computer like a classic car.

I run my computer with a Mr. Fusion home energy reactor. No more plutonium for me!

Obligatory jokes aside, I reiterate lots of stuff. Open msconfig and uncheck most everything that doesn't say Microsoft. I only have 4 icons next to my clock in XP, two of them are for sound, one antivirus/antispyware, and one I haven't used a while and could stand to remove. Sweep for viruses and spyware every once in a while, defragment after large installs (or just occasionally if you don't install big things), run checkdisk... whenever (I actually do maintain my computer, but on anywhere near the rigid schedule some of you do), uninstall things you aren't using, and you ought to running fine until your computer's horribly out of date.

I just have Steam, Fraps, Avast! AV, Nvidia Control Panel and Sound. I usually defrag after installing large files and sometimes when I haven't defragged in a bit.

Don't worry people, I just found out what was wrong with my laptop. It was the cable wired to my house for the cable and the internet. It was on the fritz! Phew, I'm so relieved. Its fixed now, thats how I'm able to do this =P

Mostly iron. And the odd dog. My computer loves those.

(Only thing I have that's nearly always open is WMP. I need to watch my Tv shows.)

I keep my computer running with prayer. Literately, my computer is six years old and I'm incapable of getting a new one, so basically every day I pray to the computer gods that nothing is broken.

Beatings.

I don't quite know WHY this works, but I have fixed an improbable number of busted electronics by hitting them just right. This list includes microwaves, computers (monitor and tower), stereos, dishwashers, televisions, amps and air conditioners. I once managed to resurrect a cell phone that had been run through the washing machine by karate chopping it. This, plus my ability to completely muck up any traditional, non-digital clock just by standing nearby, leads me to believe that I am a mutant and the X-Men will be along soon to collect and train me.
