I don't, typically. In my 2 years here, I've got one friend. It takes a long time before I make friends. Because when I make friends, I make sure they're worth having. Despite that, however, I'm the "everybody's friend" type of person. White, black, Asian, gothic, nerdy, geeky, emo, mentally retarded. All these kinds of people and more. Although this clashes with my general position as a people hater, but whatever.
As for friends here on the Escapist, uhh...I don't talk nearly enough to make friends with many people. My one and only friend came from both of us being avid Dark Souls players in the Dark Souls User Group. Although our topics of conversation are often more than just that game. Like games in general! I'll talk all day about games. But I'm typically silent otherwise(which would explain why you'll typically see me in the Gaming Discussion Forum).

I usually wait for people to friend me but sometimes I'll make the first move.
I generally won't friend people I haven't spoken to at some point. There're some people I talk to quite regularly on this that I'm not friends with, I'll make them come to me!
Might I inquire the kind of discussion that typically occurs in your User Group? I was considering joining it, but I would like to be sure that I'd actually participate. So that I
don't end up joining and making the group look bad for leaving soon after joining because it wasn't my thing.
Whoopsie. Forgive the typo.

does friending people actually do anything? like show their posts in a diff colour or ... ?
Not particularly. I'm no lawyer so don't take my word for it, but I
think all it does is allow you to find your friend's posts more easily. I'm not entirely sure, myself, other than having your profile say you're ______'s friend. However, showing your friend's posts in a different color idea is a neat idea, I must say.
