Hi I was wondering how people here overcome fears they might have.
I'm doing this because reading world war z before sleeping while your dog moans is never a good idea I have found out.

So post away!

I accidentally watched all of the death scene from Heart Of Darkness once before bed. It look a LOT of happy thoughts to get that out of my mind...

Afraid I can't help with that type of fear. You'll probably eventually drift off through the boredom of not being able to get to sleep, or tiredness anyway.

that is essentially the same problem I have right now.
I envy you that you have gotten through it

Really, the best you can do is try to force your mind into think about something else for a long enough time that you fall asleep.

I find that if I watch the start of a scary movie, and get too scared to watch it all the way through, my mind fills in the gaps of what happens after, making it 100 times worse cause my mind is a very twisted thing.

I used to be scared of Chucky from the movie Child's Play. Even a picture would freak me out. So one day I said, hell, stuff this so I stared at a pic of him until it wasn't scary anymore.

Soon I will be facing my fear of driving and my dad is going to teach me.

I have Keindranophobia as well as Aichmophobia. I am trying to work up the courage to give blood and I hold my keys when I am walking over storm drains.

Yeah that kinda fear is all in your mind. Arachnophobia I can help with, just let me gather about 20 of the giant house spiders around here together. Have you stick your hand in a bucket of them. 15 min either you get over it, or you piss your pants and pass out. I am guaranteed a good time either way.

Edit: Yeah I know, all fear is in your mind, but this is not directed at an object but rather a product of your mind fixating on something and well... yeah whatever I didn't choose the best words in the fist place and want to pretend it wasn't a mistake.

How do I overcome my fears? I face them. I realize that this doesn't work for you(what-with your fear being a book and all) but maybe you can overcome your fear by trying to think about something else. Fear is a powerful emotion but there are other emotions that can push it out of your mind. Fear tends to be a short term emotion... It will wear off quickly, so not much to worry about after today at least.

For me though I have a problem with fears.

At universal studios theres a ride that on it shows this clip of the mummy movie while spinning and shit. I didn't get over it thinking the mummy would get me for 3 freaking weeks!

when I have a fear it usually sticks and I hear stuff in my house as if somethings there. I get scared as hell and can't sleep trying to distract myself.

my problem is usually the fear comes back while sleeping and I can't distract myself while trying to sleep.

Another thing is logic never applies to my fears I can't be reasoned with. Now I keep thinking I hear moans and slowly walking....things. My fear is increased since I am in a small enclosed room with no means of escape keeping me awake thinking if anything comes I NEED TO BE READY or else.

All I can say is get a fan. It will distract you, and as white noise it will calm you. Plus you will stop hearing random shit like that. Or you could do what i do and set up an elaborate system of mirrors and lasers so you can see any point in your house from your bed.

I had a huge phobia of roller-coasters for years, I would always be the one to sit on the sidelines and while my friends had fun. Then one day I had enough, fists clenched and heart pounding I mustered the courage to get on the batman at six flags. I can't describe to you how much every fiber of my being was screaming "HOLY SHIT!! HOLY SHIT!! DON'T DO IT MAN!!" My heart was beating so fast I thought for a moment I was going to have a heart attack and could even see the headline in the paper the next day "Teen Dies of Fear on Ride".

As the cars climbed the hill of the coaster I was really starting to lose my cool, I was short of breath and pretty sure hyperventilation was not far off. But once I was zooming down that first drop and into the first cork-screw It was bliss. The rush was like nothing I'd felt before and when it was over and I was walking away, I was still in disbelief I had done it.

Fear is all in the mind, and if you can gain control over your own irrationalities of the mind you'll be all stronger for it.

Shameless advertising for Nike aside, just do it. That's honestly all you can do. I'm deathly afraid of heights and the darkness, but I've gone free climbing (rock climbing without harnesses) and spent nights alone in the wilderness. After that, you sort of confront your fears. It's not a logical process, or at least not one you're aware of; it just happens.

The only way I get myself out of fearing something is constantly facing it, thus rendering it merely boring and annoying.

I have few fears left.

By screaming and running in an opposite direction...

...srsly? Not thinking about it. If you dwell on it, you will realise how scary it is.
