I find keeping the finger still and rocking the controller back and forth with the other hand works for me.

Controller face buttons: thumb
Two controller face buttons: alternate index and middle
Controller shoulder buttons: opposite index button
Mouse: hold the mouse down with one hand and make my other vibrate. I've gotten speed records on some click-the-mouse-quickly games doing that.

Ever since I played my first import DBZ game on the SNES (oh, the good ol' days, when any crappy game could hold my attention for hours), I've used the following method:

Holding the controller in my right hand, I take my middle finger and put it over my pointer finger on my left hand and wail away on the button until I either win, or my arm seizes up.

I usually use my thumb, but if I really need to put the pedal to the metal, I'll put the controller down and use my right index finger.

I jackhammer the button with my finger rapidly by making my hand convulse... It gets the job done, but fuck does it hurt after a while.
I do this with both my middle fingers. I still suck at it though, but it's a retarded gaming gimmick anyway.

Yeah, I do it like that. It's that much faster than how other people do it.

With the mouse i basically "scratch" it, with a controller i just use my thumb.

Noone can beat one of my friends at button pressing though. Whether on PC or console he can make a pistol have the firing speed of a machine gun.

Hold the controller in my left hand and pound the button with my index finger - or if I have to alternate between two buttons, drum my index and middle finger.

I hate rapid press moments. I like treating my controllers (and mice) with respect so anytime I come across a minigame or moment where rapid button presses are required I usually skip them if possible or stop playing - The new price of persia had such a moment and I ended up using a Trainer because I didn't want to wreck my brand new mouse. :/

Down with button bashing!!!

as you're hammering, try not to let your finger get too far away from the button .. the closer it stays the more you'll hit

and never use your thumb .. keep it still and move the controller up and down instead

The mouse wheel.

Rocking it back and forth is easier then pressing again and again.

I just use my thumb. Though I do often grit my teeth like I'm having a difficult BM. If friends are nearby one will always comment on this making me laugh and then fuck up the rapid pressing.

Because they're bastards.

If it's a rapid button pressing scene, I reposition my controller so that I'm grabbing it fully with my right hand, then I start pressing the corresponding button with my left. Yes, I'm a lefty, and proud of it.

On the PC I rarely need to spam-click something. On consoles, I tend to let go of the controler with one hand, point my index finger at the button that needs spamming and hammer away.

I push them... rapidly? I don't know, I just hit them with whatever digit is nearest to the button.

I actually lift my right hand off the controller and hover my thumb over the button. Then instead of actually pushing with my thumb, I shake my hand back and forth in a turning motion, like turning a door knob really fast without grabbing it.
