For me, one of the great things about the escapist is that everbody has a very distinct "face" that anybody can instantly identify with. You can instantly tell, it's the hpynotoad guy that comments on every forum! The cat girl doing... something. Its that toon thing with the blue shirt and red hat that always is asking stupid questions! But why is it we have so few repeats? While 99% of the photos have been something from popular culture, they rarely overlap in use. I know like the Guru has been used at least twice, and somebody is using a back shot of that woman Suasan uses as her avatar, and many people use stuff from Zero Punctuation, but those cases are reletively rare. How can a site as big as the Escapist have so few doubles and so much distiction with everybody?

We all want to be known. Why would you choose an avatar similar to someone you recognize so easily?

I had the keywork in white first. THEMANWHOIS had it in black first. Pretty sure we're the only ones who have it, now that I take the time to think about it.

Its because the avatars are our digital faces that encourages us to be unique.
Also, this is a "gaming" forum, rather than just a "Halo" or "Dr. Who" oriented forum. Its very open to interpretation.

Well I assume that half of The Escapists lies dormant at any time. Or that the internet is far more massive and produces far more memes then any of us will ever be able to comprehend...

Because I use my Avatar Store magic : P

Its because we are all pretty creative like my host of avatars I've had, each unique and most well recieved.

Also everyone hates doubles and there are a ton of ZP avatars

i dont know if its like this for everyone else, but i think we all look for avatars that are "Us" without being to close to someone's avatar, like me, im sticking with Megaman EXE.s for a while, and im even had the E-Team make me a Banner for my reviews with the Megaman Proto Soul getup. Theres even a group out there that was made to help people find avatars that are just right for them. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Avatar-Hunters

We are a rather wide-spread group of individuals with so many different interests and likes that it's pretty much unlikely that repeats would be the norm.

Plus, when you have people who make their own, that just simplifies things even further.

Oh yes. This be true.

One day the internet will have its own language. We're getting dangerously close now... I can already talk to my friend Aaron without making a lick of sense to anyone else.

The day I see someone else with my fluffy scorpion.....

OT: It's because no one wants to be seen as "the guy who took _____'s avatar."

I love it that half the responses on this are "because we are all unique and individuals" :p I think it's a combination of that and luck/overwhelming amounts of awesome

Mine was made for me by Fanboy, so if someone else uses it, it's pretty obvious and I can PM them and ask them to change it.
And there is a place to go for custom avatars as well, so that may help some.

Yes there is such a place. Also on a sad note Fanboy will no longer make avatars, EVER.

Its exactly that reason, there is only one user using a repeat avy, but I'll let him get away with it

I can upload pretty much any picture I find as my avatar to the escapist and that's one thing that definitely kept me here. I hate forums that make you choose from a stock library of avatars.

Originally I used a dancing graphic of Gir, but then a month or so after I started using it people began to hi-jack it and it was popping up in posts all over the site, so being a reasonable fellow I went to my back up plan...the money you could be saving with Geico (or Kash as they seem to call him). I was rather fond of the little guy from the various commercials they did with him. Didn't really care two shits about it being the Geico mascot I just thought he was adorable and expressed the blank staring honesty I write most of my posts with very well.

-EDIT-
Oh my the topic at hand, got off on a tangent there.

I believe you don't see very many copies of avatars here because if people are given the choice to be unique the last thing they want to do is copy someone else. Having a unique avatar lets you carve out your own identity that no one can steal. (hopefully)

I've been here going on 14 hours now and I haven't seen a single duplicate, excluding ZP ones.
It's pretty amazing actually.

I'd have to put it down to people simply not liking being a duplicate, and there being a lot of people around, but more pictures around the internet.
