My record so far is 78 words per minute.
It's been a while and my skills have atrophied somewhat, but at my best I tested at 93 words per minute with 3 mistakes during a 5-minute test.

Obviously I am biased, but speed is incredibly useful. You're implying that when someone types fast, he isn't coherent. That's just silly. If you have a story in your head and you're a fast typer, it's on screen in no time.
I've highlighted this because as it happens, I'm an aspiring screenwriter studying this very course at university and I'd much rather take my time to mull on what I'm writing, to make itterations to even the most minute details to make sure it is the most engaging and cohesive piece that it can be. Basically, given the time I spend on my work anyway, being able to type an extra 30 words a minute isn't particularly a concern for me, I often type slowly when writing a story, not because I'm a slow typist, but because I'm cautious and like to ruminate on the best way in which to present things to the viewer. Though if you are working in an office or something, sure, speed is a bit more imperative.
Heh, I'm afraid I have to agree with you there. Usually, a story forms while you're writing it and you go back and edit all the time. I have to say that while my typing speed is typically quite high, I hardly ever use it unless I'm copying something from paper or when someone's dictating what I have to type.

On that note, this typing test actually gives a pretty positive view of your typing speed. Going from memory involves thinking. Just reading from screen and typing that involves.. well.. Reading.

A bit embarrassed to say - considering I spend so much time on the computer, I hoped that even though I used 4 - 6 fingers I might have got better than I did.

I lost time on the astronaut test trying to work out where the hell you strange Americans hide your apostrophe on the keyboard.

Seriously, why do that? What good is it down there next to the shift key?

43 words per minute apparently, but I could swore I typed faster than that, I think it's because I had to copy words from the screen as opposed to my head...

Sack of Cheese's Test: 103 words per minute. 576 characters per minute; 103 correct words, 4 wrong words. Position 555 of 57128 ranked people.

It's a pretty simple and nice test, but it's not perfect. Also, my stupid nails are too long right now; feel like they're definitely slowing me down.

Typing Program back in Jr. High (about ~7 years ago): ~120 wpm. Just comparing. That one used actual speeches/poems/essays at random. I recall the most common one that came up was the Gettysburg Address by Lincoln. "Four score..."

Goober's Typingtest.com thing: I chose 1 minute, English, astronaut test.
Results: 102 WPM with 511 chars in 1:00. 2 words error: corrected WPM of 100.

Still, I can type faster if I'm making shit up; and slower if I'm actually coming up with a paper or an essay. So this is not really a very useful number average aside from copying notes and such.

I got 96 words per minute. Before you think that this is impressive, I only got that good at typing because my handwriting is so dreadful that I have to type everything up. I have actually had teachers demand that I type assignments because they couldn't make heads or tails of my writing.
