First you feel like a badass for winning a mismatched fight, second the game gets easier because you've got a better gun. However in the original Splinter Cell I gave up on the first level because the guy in the house always spotted me. That game wasn't bugged and I don't know if it cheated but for me it was much too hard to be enjoyable.
I'm just plain terrible at stealth. If the game forces stealth upon me, where the enemies are giant mechs and I'm wearing cardboard, then yeah, I'll go stealth. But Splinter Cell...Splinter Cell Chaos Theory basically said, 'Right, you want the Tearoom Playset or the Chaingun-and-Rocket Awesome Set? The Awesome? Alrighty! Now, be very, very quiet...'

The idea of going stealthy when I have an advanced military assault rifle is just beyond me. This is why I'm so bad at Splinter Cell.

More on topic...Jak 2, for me, got a little too hard at times. There were some missions and levels that I would be playing for half an hour trying to get through. The last boss was nothing short of demonic.

The CoD4 epilogue on Veteran is probably the hardest thing I've done where it's been fair(ish). A lot of shooting games nowadays do have unfair AI (enemies that can track you and shoot you even when you're 'hidden' or unreasonable, laws of nature defying enemies).

I think a game is hard-but-fun if the events and AI in the game follow realistic or at least sensible rules, but as soon as people start seeing you through 15ft thick walls or hearing you breath from a mile away... in a storm... while they're on the phone, things get controller-throwing-hard and cease to be enjoyable.

The Subspace Emissary is actually really hard on Hard. It being the middle difficulty, I go in expecting a nice challenge, not my ass beaten thrice by the first boss. I went down to normal, and then easy for Tabuu.

Ive never been a big fan of twitch-type challenges in games. One that I can recall, the only time Ive physically thrown a controller across the room, was in Ocarina of Time with the boss where you have to swat his projectiles back at him. I guess I just suck at things like that.

The only two things with difficult that I absolutely hate are insta-kill "Oh, reload your quicksave and NOW you know its there!" traps, and weapons that no mere mortal can be skilled with. Like the first time I came across a knife whore in BF2142. *jump, jump, jump, slash, I die*

For me, an example of the "perfect" difficulty is the final bit in HL2 Episode 2, defending the valley. It does a nice job of ratcheting up the panic and difficulty as you go, without being overpowering. Thus when you finally kill the last strider, youre usually right on top of the base "just in time".

Man, Tabuu was a motherload of unfair to fight. Say hello to instant-killing triple waves of frame-perfect dodge necessity.
Say hello, as well, to giant-size eye beams that CANNOT be evaded unless you're pit, Kirby, Jigglypuff or metaknight.
Oh, and a bunch of other attacks that basically will hit you on pure chance as opposed to your dodging skills.

God, he was a pain to fight.

No such thing as too hard! Didn't think Deus Ex was particularly hard either, except when I got stuck nearer then end with no ammo and little health.
Actually, Halo 2 Legendary might have been too hard, sometimes I wonder if there's actually enough ammo to kill everything....
I'm told Halo 3's Legendary was meant to be harder than Halo 2's Legendary, but I found Halo 3 to be much easier overall. Don't get me wrong, Legendary on 3 is a challenge, but I don't think it ever had me frustrated or discouraged. Halo 2 did.

For me, depends on the type of game. If this is an RPG that I'm expected to spend 50+ hours to complete, I'm only playing it for the story, and having to play bosses over and over is just going to frustrate me to no end.

But on pick up and play, quick session games, hard is a good thing. Take Sega Rally Revo. That game gets as hard as nails, but the game is just so fun to play just for the racing, the turning , the views, the experiences, extra hardness and not being able to complete the first time round is great as an excuse to play again and again.

Too hard? If it isn't fun, purely because of the difficulty, then it's too hard. If it's a blip, then fair enough, but if the whole game (or most of it) is like that, then it's Too Hard City.

I honestly don't understand people who complain about difficulty, but refuse to drop the difficulty level. No offense to the earlier poster, but the idea that GOW2 is too hard, but you refuse to play it on easy, is just a bit daft.

I love it when games are stingy with ammo and good weapons, the desperation of being pinned down by an overwhelming force knowing you have to make your last few rounds count are usually some of the most memorable moments of games.
you know, im the absolute opposite, i like to have plenty of ammo + the right weapon for the right job. i still like a fairly hard game but when the game throws a tank at me and i have a pistol it annoys me, the way i see it is that if a game is good enough it should make each encounter a test no matter what weapon you have.

with the exception of things like an infiniy+1 sword

Am I the only person here who doesn't like hard games? Call me crazy but I just don't find being really fustrated and repeating the same bit over and over and over again fun. Sure, it's rewarding afterwards but it just isn't worth the effort that went into it.

That's like an athlete giving up on a 100 metre dash because he didn't win the first time.

I've survived the instant kill waves as Zero Suit Samus by standing near the middle when I got hit (was at 0 damage before getting hit). I haven't tried this, but I think you might be able to dodge it by switching Pokemon when playing as the Trainer.

As for the eye beams, you can dodge them by standing right in front of Tabuu's giant head. If he uses that attack when I fight him, he gets a face full of Falcon Punch. But if you're playing as someone big like Bowser, you'll still get hit. Hanging from the edge might work though. Haven't tried it.

F-Zero GX's story mode is pretty damn hard, but it doesn't quite reach the "too hard" point for me, despite the first mission taking me at least 20 tries on Normal (the easiest) difficulty.

The real "too hard" moments would be every second of I Wanna Be The Guy. It's pretty much impossible to avoid anything that can kill you unless you've already been killed by it before, because that's the only way you're going to see it coming. Got past those apples after dying 20 times? Now to jump across those platforms hovering over those trees. Oh and by the way, watch out for those apples that FALL UP.

Oh and this one Japanese arcade shoot-em-up where the boss pretty much fills the screen with enough flashing purple shit to induce seizures.

Deus Ex wasn't that hard, but I'm a sissy and played through it on easy, but I'll tell you what's hard. Spiderman games. I broke two controllers to Spiderman games. The first one to that stupid laser dodging level in Spiderman 2 (the one at the very beginning), and the stupid button pressing challenges in Ultimate Spiderman.

Halfway through Mortal Kombat: Armagedden. The AI all of a sudden thinks you need an ass whoppin.
You're joking, right? One of the easiest fighting game Story modes IMO. Try fighting the final boss in "Guilty Gear X: by your side" on the hardest difficulty *shrugs*

I like hard games under the condition that they're reasonably hard. As in "the AI is smart, and the law of physics and probability are the same as yours", not "You have less ammo, health; opponents have infinite ammo, regeneration, can take 4 headshots from a sniper rifle and have health 300 (and outnumber you 300 to 1)".

System Shock was hard; so was Warlords: Darklords Rising

Two games where the computer was merciless. Quite off-putting sometimes.

In brief response to the Stalker nod at the begining.
Lots of people bitched about how hard it was - and it is. Rightly so. It's a survival game. You're in the fallout zone of a nuclear explosion, a whole load of bandits and mutated creatures want your blood. Weapons, food and shelter are scarce. Other poeple are generally out for themselves. All things being even. You're gonna die.

Half the fun of those games is the initial stages where you have to be excpetionally careful and scrape through.

As for old school hard games. I enjoyed I wanna be the guy, because it's blatantly sadistic. But the old realm of having to replay exactly the same levels until you know them to a pixel so you can 'beat' the game, doesn't hold the same appeal as it used to. I don't have time to do that. I want to finish the game my first play through, even if that means quick saves.

I've finished morrowind, ninja gaiden, just about anything anyone thinks is too hard. any suggestions?
Have you tried Contra 4? It's hard. There is no Konami code for lives. The Konami code upgrades your weapons one time per stage. That's it. There are three difficulties. Easy has ten lives and five continues. Normal has five lives and four continues. Hard has three lives and three continues. It is a great challenge. I would recommend it if you like the old-school Contra games.
