4chan can be amazing 5% of the time but it's not worth digging through a mountain of fluff.

And seeing how negative and cynical this place can get, I was just curious to see if there was a relation. Not drawing any conclusions yet, but I just get the feeling that a good deal of gaming Internet forums seems to have embraced this attitude of basically spending an inordinate amount of time bashing stuff. If a stranger ever came across a random gaming forum, I feel like he / she would think that the people there don't actually like games.

So yeah, if this sort of thing goes on for maybe a few more weeks, I'm just gonna play the games instead of visiting any forum. The potential for good discussion is often ruined by vitriol and hatred, and I simply don't have the patience for it anymore. May sound a bit dramatic, but I just seem to find this behavior everywhere I go.
I hate to break it to you but I doubt these forums are ever going to become any less cynical. If anything, they constantly get worse. I stay because every now and then there are genuinely good discussions. There are just certain topics that you should stay away from at all cost. These include, but are not limited to:
Mass Effect 3
Sexism/Feminism
Why such in such game/system isn't very good
Valve is amazing
Valve is overrated
Mass Effect 3
Half Life games are amazing
Half Life games are overrated
Who would you save?
Almost anything in Religion and Politics -I try to simply avoid this section altogether
Mass Effect 3
What do you think the most overrated game is
Dark Souls has bad design
Dark Souls is Number 1
Mass Effect 3 -Seriously, this hate train, while slightly less common than a year ago, is still going full steam ahead

I'm not saying don't visit these threads because you may hold certain views that disagree with some of the topics, I'm just saying that you may begin to feel depressed about video games and possibly life in general if you visit them too often.

Nah, I was referring to an old quote likening the Escapist to the Internet's lighthouse of Alexandria and more generally the arrogance that was endemic on the forums for quite a while.

Yeah, the PC may seem a little stuck up by comparison, and yeah it probably is a tad self-righteous, but I prefer overmodding to undermodding or in the case of 4chan, no mods at all (except to block child porn).
4chan actually does have active mods, they just don't moderate for hurt feelings and boo-boos. Most blue boards will have moderation promoted from users of that board, it's why if you try and post naked women in /g/ or /tg/ they'll disappear in about five minutes. Basically they only moderate to keep a board on topic, not to keep it nice.

Yup, you're right - seems like it'll only get worse. Especially considering the inevitable influx of "PC master race"-ers in response to the new consoles. I really don't think I can stand being around any forum when that happens.

So yeah, gaming for me is just gonna be playing the games from now on. It's a shame, really. There does exist the occasional rare topic where most people are decent and can actually have a good discussion. Although I just can't go through the piles of cynicism to get to the good parts.

I'll agree, there's some truth to this.

I often feel that people here with massive post counts get more attention and get quoted a lot, while people with smaller post counts (like myself) often get skipped over and ignored.
Back in 2009 I worked with Furburt and we tested that to where we made a thread where I posted a copy pasted opinion, It was first, then Furburt posted the same opinion, nearly word for word. He was quoted more than twenty times, not once for me.

Occasionally lurk there. Though I do love 4chan's views of the Escapist....spot on there are.
What are their opinions of this place, if you don't mind sharing?
Liberal majority, high post ammount sets tone for whole thread (example if some one has 10000 posts their opinion is the threads opinion). Progressive to a fault. Edgy, that sort of thing.
I'm a religious conservative nut with >20,000 posts.

Now what?
You've broke the rules............

My thoughts on /v/ and 4chan in general

I don't go there but I do love me some 4chan thread highlights in the form of screen shots. I did browse an archived /vg/ thread sometime ago because I wanted more in depth info about a game and it was actually pretty good discussion/circle jerk when all the posters liked the thing they were talking about

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the transparency of the average 4chan user. Its both hilarious and depressing the way some people can see through and summarize an entire online community in less than a sentence. I do find it funny how people paint the escapist as stuck up just because most here people appreciate amount of moderation. Its nice when I can go through a thread and browse a bunch of different opinions and comments without name calling and people quoting huge walls of text just to say "^this". If I wanted a more "free" forum, I would just go to 4chan (though I do wish people here would stop being 2edgy4me)

Third...ed? After some googling I did manage to find the site, though I was expecting something more. I've never felt so out of the loop than when I first clicked on this thread. I had no idea what you people were talking about.

I'm getting old and out of touch.
To anyone else having trouble, here's an article about 4chan in general [http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sites/4chan] and one about /v/ [http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sites/v] courtesy of know your meme.

I much rather vg to be honest as v is far too negative for me and I get enough of that here. Also I doubt The Escapist and 4chan have massive crossover of active user base given that every site seems to hate every other site while the site they are on is the best thing since sliced fucking bread.
More than you'd think, the internet is full of this type of "hate", posting about how much they hate the community of another website, all the while they have an account there, and a post count in the 3 digit range at least.

If nothing else, anonymity tends to turn people into massive hypocrites who will condemn something in one second, and then gleefully partake in that very same thing the next second.

For me, this is only one of a few sites, I regularly visit. Apart from the escapist, I've also been on or am on the forums or comments of: Kotaku, Destructoid, 4chan, SomethingAwful, Spacebattles, Stardestroyer.net, and rpg.net. I've also lurked on many more.
I suppose you're right I should have probably stated there isn't much a cross of people who identify openly as some one who frequents both not that there would be any reason to normally.

What's /v/?
Seconded, could somebody explain what we're talking about here? And yes I tried Googling it to no avail.
It's 4chan's video game board. It's content is rather self explanatory.

I've only visited /v/ once or twice, but I didn't care much for it.
I visit /tg/ about every day now, but I rarely post. I don't play 40k or DnD; I just participate in the fun threads.
Oh, and just to add icing to the cake, I was given a low-content warning for asking my question.

Seriously, mods?

I don't go to /v/ for much the same reason that many people have already posted, aka the whole
>you opinion a shit
>u mad bro
>/v/ doesn't actually like videogames
stuff. Funnily enough, I love /a/, and they act much the same way about anime. I guess the difference is that for all its inherent faults, /a/'s "self-moderated board culture" (as silly as that sounds) generally keeps most of the sperglords somewhat in line, even if it gets seriously elitist at times.

I also go to /tg/, but that's mainly for quest threads and reminiscing about when I played 40k
