I really want developers to snap out of the delusion that they have been in since they decided that the average gamer wants (weak) characters and a (lame) plot at the expense of limiting player freedom due to the necessity of story requiring linearity.
Ummm no one actually decided that... ever. The average gamer (who that actually is, I'm not sure) would prefer fully fleshed out characters and a good plot so that they have direction and meaning for their actions. I don't want to wander aimlessly around an area with no goal, nor do I want to kill endless hoardes of people for no real reason. I don't feel that I have been limited because of the story at all and a good game would make sure that you are never given that feeling. Granted, Alan Wake does feel linear, but the overall experience is so engaging I really couldn't care less.
Ok.

Name one game that has a strong, well-written, story with multiple narrative paths (i.e. non-linearity), supports different approaches to the in-game problems your character faces (increasing replayability) and culminates in one of several equally credible alternative endings; other than Deus Ex...

I purchased The Orange Box when there was a price drop for PC for 30 USD. Sadly, my old laptop didn't have it in her to play anything so I had to wait. Then, I purchased it for 360 while I had one for another 30 USD used. Upon getting my seventh 360 back from RRoD I sold everything and got a PS3. I then purchased TOB for a measly 8 USD. I'm probably going to purchase it again as my Game Crazy is going to be a liquidation hub for other Crazies. That will be the fourth time I've ever purchased any game ... which happens to be multiple games.

I'm sorry, but I just have to say... Knights of the Old Republic.

Ooooh, thanks for that. I'll check it out.

...but you have to admit that there aren't many and we could do with ALL story-based games being equally non-linear.

stop complaining people, here in venezuela a PS3 game cost upwards of 500Bs (thats 200 dollars if you are wondering) and the "good" ones can set you back 600Bs or even more, in a country where 90 percent of the people only earn 40Bs for a full day work (REAL work not those wimpy 9 to 5 "jobs" americans have, im talking 12 hours a day easy) so after paying that for GOD OF WAR 3 and beating in ONE sit how do you think i feel, ALAN WAKE at least took me three sits to beat and i enjoyed FAR more, just like HEAVY RAIN wich i also enyojed mayorly, and i have replayed a lot of the chapters several times to get different outcomes just for kicks, for some reason i also really like BORDERLANDS (multiplayer) and definetely the most bang for my buck has to be COD4 STILL play it to this day, (i played like 80 hours of FF13 also)

Halo.

By the time I got it the game had been out for a couple of years and I was absolutely sickened by all the praise being heaped upon it. So when my brother got an XBox I slapped down the $50 for the game and we played and won it in 2-player in one sitting (well less than 12 hours). GodDAMN that was worth it. FINALLY!
