How often do you decide not to post to avoid CAPTCHA?

Pub club so I don't have to worry about them. Plus they only come up like once a day from what I saw before I was a member.

Also, I have had CAPTCHAS 3 or 4 times in a row so there is no evidence that it only comes up every 10 or 20 posts.
Oh yeah, I believe this is due to forum lag.
It takes a few minutes sometimes for it to realise you've already entered one (and stop showing them for the meantime).
Hell, I've even had a captcha box disappear while I was in the middle of typing a post out. I had only just entered one a couple of minutes earlier (I guess it finally caught up).

..or the instability of the servers, the site seems to slow down alot too. Not just on Wednesdays either. I know Escapist is broke after that Extra Credits mess so maybe they could save money by dropping CAPTCHA. :)
Quite possible.

Another possible solution would be to remove captcha requirements when a user goes over 1000 posts (or some other arbitrary number), since spambots will never get post counts that high.
Yep, once a poster proves they are a real human being (or atleast a Golden Retriever) then they should not have to prove it again unless they start spamming.

Talk about it here, hope the mods give a shit what posters think.
Or you could contact a mod directly, maybe even join the Moderation Team group made specifically for members to voice their opinions and suggest improvements. Or you could moan to us, I suppose...

OT: Never.
Contacting a mod directly would probably have zero impact, just like this thread but atleast with this thread there is more than one person "moaning".

Seriously, get over yourself, if this thread bothers you so much, why not skip it?
Why do you think that?

I'm not bothered. I'm just not the best at helping people I suppose.

Depends on how much you post, for me it used to be about once a day.

Never. It's just a CAPTCHA. It takes 10 seconds per day on your second post of the day, and that's it.

Though honestly, it would be a whole lot smarter to put it on account signup instead.

Because no doubt the mods have already seen this thread (they did move it from Gaming Discussion to here), that is all I would accomplish by directly contacting a mod.

Meh. It's not that hard to refresh the captcha a few times to get a readable one. BTW, they're not case-sensitive, and you only have to type the word with the partially-inverted text.
Sure, it's not that hard to click a mouse a few times nor is it that hard to decipher and type it but it really is annoying and unnecessary.

Do you ever wonder why legitimate posters have to prove over and over again that they aren't bots? Is there no way they can program a flag in to only throw captchas at new posters until they prove they aren't bots? It's ridiculous and I guess I am curious how many posts were skipped because people didn't want to deal with CAPTCHAS.
I don't ever get a Captcha when I post here. Like...ever.

Hmm, an interesting topic. Well... wait what's that I just read?

This I gotta test.

OT: Well Captcha usually dissuades me from posting when it starts to appear too many times in a row. E.G. every thread I visit after making one post. It can be really annoying. Especially in an RP thread.

Captcha: dsVaPri leza ...

Let me clarify a couple of things.

- Yes, I am aware that you can refresh the CAPTCHA (this doesn't make it go away so it solves nothing)
- Deciphering CAPTCHAS isn't necessarily hard, it's fuckin' annoying.
- I am aware that you can cheat the CAPTCHA, that doesn't represent most people though and this is about people who don't cheat the CAPTCHA.

So please, no more helpful advice about how to properly use CAPTCHA.
They aren't giving you helpful advice on how to use a captcha.

They're demonstrating that captcha is a short-lived nuisance at its worst: a pittance compared to the desire to share any thoughts of relative importance or substance.

They're also implying that you're either lazy or lacking for worthwhile things to say, to be so easily deterred by a simple anti-spam measure.

They're also, also suggesting that those are exactly the kinds of people who contribute to spam, and that as a result there is no meaningful loss.

They must have just read the title and missed the convincing, thought-provoking points inside.
I don't want to speak for the mods, so do go and talk to them, but this 'issue' was raised when CAPTCHA was implemented and I assume everything was sorted satisfactorily because this is the first thread I've seen since complaining about it. I recall their arguments were: "It stops spammers, as well as accounts which have been hijacked/converted to spambots. We don't want to segregate new and old users by letting the older ones skip it."
Opposing arguments were: "It's annoying and takes up our time."

Never. I don't really understand what all the fuss is about, captchas really aren't very difficult most of the time, and if there's a proper crazy one (or one using a symbol I can't type) you can just refresh.

To avoid captcha? Never, not really. To avoid hurting people's feelings and starting a flame war? All the bloody time. :p

So you do agree that the mods have already made up their minds and have no intention of dropping CAPTCHA. Why then should I go contact a mod rather than having a thread where people can discuss CAPTCHA? One person contacting a mod about CAPTCHA won't have any effect and you know it but I suppose you had to come in here and whine about me creating a thread because...well, I don't really know why.

Yes I do. But I think you should still contact the mods, as they are much better at arguing their case than I am, and might even convince you. If you don't want to give the opposite argument a chance to convince you then I suggest you consider why you are really arguing.
I came in here out of curiosity, saw you implying that the mods didn't give a shit what users thought, and thought I'd try and correct this injustice. The mods do care what you think, but this has been done before, and your points are the same as last time.

The only time it bothers me is when I type my response and the CAPTCHA and hit "Post" and it goes to the page telling me I must've somehow posted something else between the time I typed it and when (half a second later) I hit "post".

I don't understand how that even happens, but it happened 4 times yesterday and it irked me.

For the record, I get CAPTCHAs pretty randomly. Sometimes I'll get 2-3 in a row and sometimes I won't get one for a day or two and it doesn't seem in any way connected to how much I post on any given day.

I am a bit miffed after reading this thread, though. I have never gotten a non-English CAPTCHA! The most exotic thing I've ever gotten is a comma or a dash at the beginning or end of a word. Hmph.

Never. It only takes a second.

However, I often decide not to post because I'm afraid I'll break one of this forum's silly rules, namely "Don't be a jerk."

Seriously, the mods can post their arguments here for all the good it will do. I am not interested in going head to head with a mod as it wouldn't end well.

I already gave the opposite argument a chance and I think it's ridiculous to make every poster (who doesn't pay them) prove every few posts that they aren't bots. Don't you think there is a better way? I (and other posters) have suggested a better way but the mods don't want to go that route because as you say "We don't want to segregate new and old users by letting the older ones skip it." Which begs the question, why do paying posters get to skip it? Is there some kind of extra hack protection on the accounts of paying posters or are they just as likely to get their account stolen?
