Apart from the Forum games? Never. It isn't that much effort anyway, and the refresh button is always there.
No doubt, I am already on probation and Jedamethis wants me to go argue with a mod. I am not the smartest guy in the world but I'm not that stupid.zombflux said:Never. It only takes a second.
However, I often decide not to post because I'm afraid I'll break one of this forum's silly rules, namely "Don't be a jerk."
Why wouldn't it? Are you unable to restrain yourself from insulting somebody ever couple seconds? Are you completely unwilling to listen to opposing viewpoints? Do you have uncontrollable spasms in the presence of authority? I do not want you to argue with a mod. I want you to go present your arguments and let them present theirs. Of course, I can't make you do anything, but I think this would help you.Crono1973 said:Seriously, the mods can post their arguments here for all the good it will do. I am not interested in going head to head with a mod as it wouldn't end well.Jedamethis said:Yes I do. But I think you should still contact the mods, as they are much better at arguing their case than I am, and might even convince you. If you don't want to give the opposite argument a chance to convince you then I suggest you consider why you are really arguing.Crono1973 said:So you do agree that the mods have already made up their minds and have no intention of dropping CAPTCHA. Why then should I go contact a mod rather than having a thread where people can discuss CAPTCHA? One person contacting a mod about CAPTCHA won't have any effect and you know it but I suppose you had to come in here and whine about me creating a thread because...well, I don't really know why.Jedamethis said:They must have just read the title and missed the convincing, thought-provoking points inside.Crono1973 said:Because no doubt the mods have already seen this thread (they did move it from Gaming Discussion to here), that is all I would accomplish by directly contacting a mod.Jedamethis said:Why do you think that?Crono1973 said:Contacting a mod directly would probably have zero impact, just like this thread but atleast with this thread there is more than one person "moaning".Jedamethis said:Or you could contact a mod directly, maybe even join the Moderation Team group made specifically for members to voice their opinions and suggest improvements. Or you could moan to us, I suppose...Crono1973 said:Talk about it here, hope the mods give a shit what posters think.Zachary Amaranth said:A little too often, but what can you do?
OT: Never.
Seriously, get over yourself, if this thread bothers you so much, why not skip it?
I'm not bothered. I'm just not the best at helping people I suppose.
I don't want to speak for the mods, so do go and talk to them, but this 'issue' was raised when CAPTCHA was implemented and I assume everything was sorted satisfactorily because this is the first thread I've seen since complaining about it. I recall their arguments were: "It stops spammers, as well as accounts which have been hijacked/converted to spambots. We don't want to segregate new and old users by letting the older ones skip it."
Opposing arguments were: "It's annoying and takes up our time."
I came in here out of curiosity, saw you implying that the mods didn't give a shit what users thought, and thought I'd try and correct this injustice. The mods do care what you think, but this has been done before, and your points are the same as last time.
I already gave the opposite argument a chance and I think it's ridiculous to make every poster (who doesn't pay them) prove every few posts that they aren't bots. Don't you think there is a better way? I (and other posters) have suggested a better way but the mods don't want to go that route because as you say "We don't want to segregate new and old users by letting the older ones skip it." Which begs the question, why do paying posters get to skip it? Is there some kind of extra hack protection on the accounts of paying posters or are they just as likely to get their account stolen?
I'd be a piss poor troll. You haven't insulted me at all, so I'm pretty sure you wouldn't insult a mod and get yourself banned.Crono1973 said:Seriously, you're trolling now.Jedamethis said:Why wouldn't it? A better way? 'Better' depends on who you are. To the Tech Team and mods who have to deal with spammers, this is the best way. I agree with them. What do you propose?
I haven't the slightest idea. Why not go ask? I would, but to be honest I can't bring myself to give a fuck. They get to save a couple seconds time on the occasional post, well good for them. I am content keeping my money to myself and submitting myself to the horrors of having to type a couple letters more than my post.
I have already proposed (so has another poster) a better way, try reading the thread that you are complaining about.
Why would I want to go argue with a mod when I already know what they are going to say? There is no benefit to doing that. Their case is that CAPTCHA stops spammers (isn't that what the mods are for) and I am saying that making everyone prove they aren't bots every 20 posts isn't the best way to go about it. They say they don't want to separate the old posters from the new and so we are ALL stuck with proving we aren't bots every 20 posts. That's ridiculous and I could tell that to a mod directly or all the mods could read it right here. I don't see the difference except that directly arguing with a mod is more likely to end with me banned.
Wait, so you're arguing that it would be detrimental to new users joining if they had to fuck with CAPTCHA, well they do have to fuck with CAPTCHA and I would say that if they knew that CAPTCHA would go away after X number of posts they would be more likely to stay.Jedamethis said:I'd be a piss poor troll. Only make new users do it - You and others are unwilling to fill in CAPTCHAs, so surely you can see that rather than join, new users could just not bother, and leave. Considering regular viewers are the sites only source of revenue, this would not be a good idea.
Just have one on account sign-up - This would be so easy to circumvent that we may as well not have it. If you wish to spam the shit out of the forums, just sign in and then hand over to a spambot.
That is indeed what the mods are for. But would a clever Engineer run out and shoot people alone or build a turret to help? The CAPTCHA is one of the mod's ways of doing their job.
You read the rules right? The only way you will get banned by arguing with a mod is if you insult them. Now as I said before, unless you are unable to restrain yourself from insulting somebody ever couple seconds, you have nothing to fear.
I don't believe that would happen. People are lazy, and if it seems like you have to pass a trial to get into a place, well, you didn't really want to that much anyway. May as well not bother, seeing as you likely don't know anyone and are not invested in the community.Crono1973 said:Wait, so you're arguing that it would be detrimental to new users joining if they had to fuck with CAPTCHA, well they do have to fuck with CAPTCHA and I would say that if they knew that CAPTCHA would go away after X number of posts they would be more likely to stay.Jedamethis said:I'd be a piss poor troll. And on another point, think of all the spam it would encourage. Short posts which exist solely to raise the users post count. That's why we have the low content post rule, and why people are told not to place importance on post count.

The rules on this site are pretty ridiculous. You can't get warnings for nothing, I see it happen to people all the time and I am on probation at the moment for being a jerk (I think that's the rule I broke). My first two warnings were for low content posts. Don't tell me that the only way to get in trouble is to insult a mod, that's BS.
And on another point, think of all the spam it would encourage. Short posts which exist solely to raise the users post count. That's why we have the low content post rule, and why people are told not to place importance on post count.
"You read the rules right? The only way you will get banned by arguing with a mod is if you insult them."
Why bother to write a response on an internet forum and decide near the end it isn't worth doing because you need to decipher a captcha?Crono1973 said:Simple question, how often do you decide that you aren't interested in deciphering another captcha and just decide not to post?
I type out alot of posts and decide not to post them. Sometimes typing something out makes you feel better even if no one else sees it. Typing a post and then deciding not to post because of CAPTCHA isn't that different really. Mostly though, I notice the CAPTCHA before I type anything.GigaHz said:Why bother to write a response on an internet forum and decide near the end it isn't worth doing because you need to decipher a captcha?Crono1973 said:Simple question, how often do you decide that you aren't interested in deciphering another captcha and just decide not to post?
That's the weirdest form of laziness I've ever read. It would be like writing a song in sheet music and then scrapping it after discovering you need to put a cap on your pen.
This sums things up rather well.GigaHz said:Why bother to write a response on an internet forum and decide near the end it isn't worth doing because you need to decipher a captcha?Crono1973 said:Simple question, how often do you decide that you aren't interested in deciphering another captcha and just decide not to post?

That reasoning is not related to deciphering a captcha though, that's you venting and deciding that other people don't need to see your response. Not wanting to respond because of a captcha seems weirdly phobic.Crono1973 said:I type out alot of posts and decide not to post them.
