Why would I want to go argue with a mod when I already know what they are going to say? There is no benefit to doing that. Their case is that CAPTCHA stops spammers (isn't that what the mods are for) and I am saying that making everyone prove they aren't bots every 20 posts isn't the best way to go about it. They say they don't want to separate the old posters from the new and so we are ALL stuck with proving we aren't bots every 20 posts. You can get warnings for nothing, I see it happen to people all the time and I am on probation at the moment for being a jerk (I think that's the rule I broke). I don't believe that would happen. People are lazy, and if it seems like you have to pass a trial to get into a place, well, you didn't really want to that much anyway. May as well not bother, seeing as you likely don't know anyone and are not invested in the community.
And on another point, think of all the spam it would encourage. Short posts which exist solely to raise the users post count. That's why we have the low content post rule, and why people are told not to place importance on post count.

I don't want to speak for the mods, so do go and talk to them, but this 'issue' was raised when CAPTCHA was implemented and I assume everything was sorted satisfactorily because this is the first thread I've seen since complaining about it. I recall their arguments were: "It stops spammers, as well as accounts which have been hijacked/converted to spambots. We don't want to segregate new and old users by letting the older ones skip it."
Opposing arguments were: "It's annoying and takes up our time."

So you do agree that the mods have already made up their minds and have no intention of dropping CAPTCHA. Why then should I go contact a mod rather than having a thread where people can discuss CAPTCHA? One person contacting a mod about CAPTCHA won't have any effect and you know it but I suppose you had to come in here and whine about me creating a thread because...well, I don't really know why.

Yes I do. But I think you should still contact the mods, as they are much better at arguing their case than I am, and might even convince you. If you don't want to give the opposite argument a chance to convince you then I suggest you consider why you are really arguing.
I came in here out of curiosity, saw you implying that the mods didn't give a shit what users thought, and thought I'd try and correct this injustice. The mods do care what you think, but this has been done before, and your points are the same as last time.

Which begs the question, why do paying posters get to skip it? Is there some kind of extra hack protection on the accounts of paying posters or are they just as likely to get their account stolen?

Why wouldn't it? Are you unable to restrain yourself from insulting somebody ever couple seconds? Are you completely unwilling to listen to opposing viewpoints? Do you have uncontrollable spasms in the presence of authority?

A better way? 'Better' depends on who you are. To the Tech Team and mods who have to deal with spammers, this is the best way. I agree with them. What do you propose?

I haven't the slightest idea. Why not go ask? I would, but to be honest I can't bring myself to give a fuck. They get to save a couple seconds time on the occasional post, well good for them. I am content keeping my money to myself and submitting myself to the horrors of having to type a couple letters more than my post.

Why would I want to go argue with a mod when I already know what they are going to say? There is no benefit to doing that. Their case is that CAPTCHA stops spammers (isn't that what the mods are for) and I am saying that making everyone prove they aren't bots every 20 posts isn't the best way to go about it. They say they don't want to separate the old posters from the new and so we are ALL stuck with proving we aren't bots every 20 posts. That's ridiculous and I could tell that to a mod directly or all the mods could read it right here. I don't see the difference except that directly arguing with a mod is more likely to end with me banned.

Only make new users do it - You and others are unwilling to fill in CAPTCHAs, so surely you can see that rather than join, new users could just not bother, and leave. Considering regular viewers are the sites only source of revenue, this would not be a good idea.

Just have one on account sign-up - This would be so easy to circumvent that we may as well not have it. If you wish to spam the shit out of the forums, just sign in and then hand over to a spambot.

That is indeed what the mods are for. But would a clever Engineer run out and shoot people alone or build a turret to help? The CAPTCHA is one of the mod's ways of doing their job.

Wait, so you're arguing that it would be detrimental to new users joining if they had to fuck with CAPTCHA, well they do have to fuck with CAPTCHA and I would say that if they knew that CAPTCHA would go away after X number of posts they would be more likely to stay.

The rules on this site are pretty ridiculous. You can't get warnings for nothing, I see it happen to people all the time and I am on probation at the moment for being a jerk (I think that's the rule I broke). My first two warnings were for low content posts. Don't tell me that the only way to get in trouble is to insult a mod, that's BS.

I don't believe that would happen. People are lazy, and if it seems like you have to pass a trial to get into a place, well, you didn't really want to that much anyway. May as well not bother, seeing as you likely don't know anyone and are not invested in the community.
And on another point, think of all the spam it would encourage. Short posts which exist solely to raise the users post count. That's why we have the low content post rule, and why people are told not to place importance on post count.

That reasoning is not related to deciphering a captcha though, that's you venting and deciding that other people don't need to see your response. Not wanting to respond because of a captcha seems weirdly phobic.
