How often do you play old games?

I've been playing through the Castlevania trilogy on the DS; does that count?
There's "old" as in "not released within the last couple of years" (which seems to cover most of the games listed here, including by the OP), there's old as in "I've played them before". Then there's old as in "doesn't play on modern systems without emulation". I played the Atari 2600 Adventure not that long ago, and still occasionally enjoy playing the Commodore 64 Archon. I occasionally trot out Sierra On-Line's Jones in the Fast Lane, which holds up pretty well, being essentially a board game.

I don't think there's any ground in the OLD GAMES GOOD NEW GAMES BAD BAAAAAH line that's touted a lot, because it's easy to find pearls amongst the swine, especially if you have a PC (and not even a high-end one).

I am working on Star wars empire at war and Divine divinity and Skyrim, gotta watch those mods you have to install them in order and shit else things go bad fast. I am running Skyrim with over 15 mods 3 or 4 my own.Vandenberg1 said:

Well my original Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, Megadrive and N64 still get regular use. My 360 on the other hand barely gets touched. More or less every PC game I own came out before the last console generation bar a select few, though this is more because my PC is pretty damn old now and I currently can't afford a new one.
I play a fair few fighting games on 360/ps3 with mates and own a fair few newer DS games but that's about it. I struggle to get into most of the newer games I play, it's kind of annoying.

I mostly play old games Centipede is my favorite closely followed by Doom 95. I did just get Dead Space for free from Origin and it's not a bad spin off of Doom, though it doesn't scare me nearly as much as Doom 1 does. I also have on good authority that my older cousin is selling his Atari and duck hunt. In general I can be found playing the classics more often than starting a new game in Mass Effect, Dragon Age, or Morrowind.
Every so often I'll play older games, though I'll admit it's hard while trying to work through my backlog of new games.
At some point I'm going to replay FFVI, which I last played through around 15 years ago. Though now I see there's an "updated" FFIII for PC out on steam now and I've got a hankering to try it again.

Good design probably helps, but there's the fact that it also got a few ports afterwards, and they also bundled the game with BioShock: Infinite as well.The Enquirer said:
Well any game beyond 6+ years is considered old, but I did go back last year and beat FFVIII on my old PS1 so it's a crap shoot on age really. I can't stand FF X-2 and beyond so good luck with that. FF X at least has Rammstein in the last boss fight.DanielBrown said:
Thanks? I don't care for anything beyond FFX either. The only redeeming feature of X-2 is that it was the last Final Fantasy with a decent combat system. Bought the original on the release date, but I've never been able to beat it as the girls and dialogue(among a lot of other flaws) sickened me. If Fallout New Vegas constitutes old then I play old games almost exclusively. I haven't even gotten to New Vegas yet, I'm still on Fallout 3.
I just can't justify buying new games when the back catalogue of great old ones is so large. The only problem of course is that you tend to get left out of the conversation on sites like this when it comes to new releases. But I think it's worth it
Next time you plan on paying over 40$ for a new game, stop and think if there are any older games you've never gotten around to playing that might be better. Obviously if you're all about teh graffix (which I have nothing against) then you'll prefer newer games in general, but chances are there are a lot of great games you've missed out on too.

Most of the time I prefer older games... I recently started playing Fallout 3, then moved onto Fallout New Vegas. I'm looking back at games I could start playing to pass the time...

Rarely. I kind of like where gaming is now so I mostly play current releases('current' being anything between now and, say, 2009). I've been playing games since the Atari 2600 but the PS3 is probably my most played system of all time. I always hear many people claiming games used to be so much better in the 'good old days', but I don't see it. Yeah there are a few retro gems(mainly from the 16-bit era) but most of them just didn't really age that well or were crap to begin with. In general I'm having lot more fun with modern games.
I'm going on a binge with Sim City 4, Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Socom Combined Assault.

New games in general seem so lackluster to me anymore. It doesn't help that everything is being so hyped up in the past few years that I've become incredibly cynical of big budget franchises and new IPs created by the big publishers' design committees. Indy games have non of those problems, so I try some of those when I find something interesting on Steam. There's just so many of varying technical quality and charm I usually choose something that's already 2 years old.
In the past few years, I've wondered why I got all three 7th gen consoles. The exclusives on each were great. But even after buying a used copy of a new to 2 year old game or finding a Steam deal, I find myself instead either playing old PC games that stand the test of time, especial when mods breathe new life into them (hello Brutal Doom and Super Metroid Redesign), or playing console games from the 6th gen or earlier. The new console gen doesn't look exciting so if I did buy a new console it would be a Wii U on the simple ground that they got the only exclusives worth trying. Even then, many games I buy would be old to the publishers' sales departments' point of view.
