plus the early ones play Gamecube games (and take the peripherals) which is a cool lil bonus :)
Wait, it's only the earlier models? Not all of them?
Redesigned "Family Edition" Wiis and the Wii Mini are not backwards compatible
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii#Backward_compatibility

basically if it's got a flap on the side with hidden Gamecube controller ports its backwards compatible...but later ones don't.

that said as the OP has a Gamecube its just an added potentially handy plus...and he should keep his Gamecube cause in my opinion the Game Boy Player attachment for that console (which doesn't work with the Wii) is one of its own rather big pluses.
Thanks for that, as I was going to get a Wii to play my Gamecube games (and Wii games with GC controller), and I probably would have bought a non BC version.

Just to give you a little more info, the Wii Mini was only released in Canada, and the Wii Family was released in Europe with a Black version released later in the US, but they're usually clearly marked on the box as "Family". However if you're buying used, make sure you check for the flap.

EDIT: Mini was released in Europe and the US but they clearly don't match up with the original design and are easy to pick out. Smaller and red/black color scheme.

Ask yourself this, are you happy playing the games you are now on the systems you are now? If yes then no.

Thanks for that, more information is always a good thing. In case I have to buy new, is the flap mentioned/visible anywhere on the box? Like backwards compatibility as a feature, maybe?

I've been around since the early days of the NES but the PS3 is probably my favorite(and most played) console so far. I never would have thought it until like 4 years ago when games started coming out I could only dream about in the early days of videogames. If you're content with what you have it's all good ofcourse but I'd be lying if I said you wouldn't be missing out on some of the greatest games ever made if you skipped this gen. Espescially now next-gen consoles have been released you can probably get a PS3 and the best games on the system for dirt cheap.

Another thing is that many games are near unplayable without their patches, or games that have been significantly improved since release. So you probably want to play them before the servers are shut down.

Maybe you should get a Wii U. If you are fine with those systems, a Wii U might be your best choice. It can play Wii games too.

Never too late to get an "old system". My brother got a PS3 literally yesterday. But like I said, if you're happy with those systems, a Wii U might be your best choice.

Those are good consoles with big libraries of games, so it's understandable that you didn't bother with the newer ones yet. If you want to play games from the last and current generation, I'd recommend getting a PC - one platform for all your games and the games are cheap and easy to get (Steam).

I didn't own anything but the first couple of PlayStations (plus a very very old GameBoy) until a few months ago. I'm only now enjoying some of the earlier 6th gen games. To each their own I guess.
