How picky are you when reporting?

I report whenever I feel it is appropriate. Better safe than sorry, and besides; the final decision lies with the mods. Therefore, not reporting can only cause naughty folk to slip under the radar, over-reporting can only waste a moderator's time. Which isn't that big a deal, since its their job to make sure that sort of thing doesn't fly.

Depends on the forum. On the Escapist, I know we have a higher amount of sane posters than other forums, and anything that deserves to be reported will be reported before I need to step up. I also try to be more loose. I see people getting suspended and banned for very innocent things. I just sit back, relax, and let other people take the trash out.

On the WWE forums, it's a different story. While I do not report much, it is full of noobs, trolls, pointless threads, duplicate threads, and is overall a lower quality of forum. The phrase "Use the search bar" doesn't even exist there, and believe me, we need it badly!

I report anything that is against the rules immediately. I'm not exactly stingy with the thing either, I report anyone and everyone who violates on of the forum rules.

I never report, EVER. I think everyone has the right to say what they want, but I also think everyone has the right to report what they want.

I'm not that picky. One word posts, trolls, flaming and porn all get reported, while sometimes I'll report people with bad spelling/grammar, but it has to be well and truly indecipherable before that happens.

So really, I report when I feel it's appropriate to help maintain a decent forum.

When it comes to reporting the basic deal is do it, and we'll sort our way through. We don't see nearly as much of the forums as people thing and that's where you guys come in. If you don't report something it's pretty fair to think that we won't spot it.

Reporting is anonymous. Entirely.
Reporting does not mean something automatically gets the person banned. We exercise discretion when it comes to swinging the banhammer.
Reporting is your way of being involved in the moderation process. If you think it's inappropriate, and lots of other people think it's inappropriate then we pay attention to that. We function for the community rather than as overlords.

So guys please do. If you feel something is getting attention fast enough you can PM one of our mod team, contact us through IRC or an instant messenger.

I report things that are obvious spam, offensive to anyone or are just unwarranted attacks on good people. (like a person who viciously attacked bungie the other day. It was offensive and uncalled for. )

So it depends.

Don't usually report, as most times by the time I'm reading a topic the posts have already been dealt with.

Though this week I've been overly button-happy, but I think that's more that I've come across some flame-filled arguments or plain offensive posts. I don't report posts with bad grammar, unless it's leet-speak for something insulting and/or racist and/or simply trolling.

I take the view that if I report something that I view as distasteful (which means it's downright insulting to normal people) then at least I've done something about it, instead of just moaning or getting involved in a flame-war - and it's up to the mods to decide whether it was worth the report or not. If not then maybe they'll say something to me, who knows - but I think it's better than sitting back saying "eh, someone else'll report it" (because if everyone does that then nothing does get done about the post).

If I think something is in violation of the forum rules, I will report it. I like the high level these forums are maintained at, and do my best to try to maintain it. Besides, no matter what you report, it's up to the moderator to decide whether it's probation/ban worthy or not.

I don't report at all, no matter what people post.

Why report? If you disagree with a comment/statement, or are a grammar and spelling nazi....then don't read the fucking post. Report buttons in forums always bug me because they serve no purpose to anyone with half a brain, and can easily be abused to sick mods on someone who doesn't really deserve it.

Listen, if you get offended by a bigoted term or some outlandish posting.....ignore it. Don't read it, leave the thread or something other than be a tattler. Exercise personal responsibility, something that is sorely lacking in this world.

Nothing is offensive till someone thinks it so.
I'm not going to argue with your not reporting. That is your right, and I even sort of understand where you are coming from. The one thing that is sticking with me is the "Don't read it" part. How am I going to know if any one particular post is going to be offensive until after I've read it? At that point it's too late to unread it, and sometimes these posts just come out of left field in an otherwise reasonable thread. Obviously if the opening post is something I find distasteful or offensive, I wouldn't read the thread, but random posts take you by surprise.

I´m pretty trigger happy when it comes to reporting. If I find the post offensive, distasteful, utterly pointless, or otherwise against the guidelines, I´ll shoot without asking. It harms no one, even if I am being too strict, since it takes 2-3 reports to get the mods attention.

Just helping the mods to keep this place nice and clean for us good people.

Fairly often, after all if they didn't do anything wrong then the mods won't punish them, if they are in breach of the guidelines then I'm aiding the mods.

It's win-not lose! Not quite Win-Win but still helpful.

Yeah this place should sink into a quagmire the likes of /b! Then all the smart people who care about the site can just leave if they don't like the place.

One point however, how can I not read something yet know it is in breach of the rules? I won't know a post is bad untill I read it, so "Don't fucking read it" isn't going to work. I don't want this site to become bad, why be lazy and ignore the problem when I can work to make it better? After all, no mod on this site has ever abused their powers, this is a good froum, and unlike you I wish it to remain so.

I report quite often. I'll report one-word posts and the like, or things which seem offensive.

I report things that I even have a question about. If it oughtn't be banned or acted upon, then it's up to the mods to decide. If I KNOW that something is a breach of the rules, I PM it directly to a mod. Those things that I have no questions about.

I report because i feel all manly when i do so, infact i reported you just to feel the rush!

Hmm Trolls, not grammer trolls since they are untouchable it seems, i have never seen anyone report a grammar nazi, the reason escapes me since they all report trolling.

Just the basic shit thats blatantly there to antagonise people.
Grammar allows people to understand your point, and prevents the Escapist from becoming youtube-esque.

When in doubt, report.
Im all for Grammar, but correcting someone for their capitals and one single spelling mistake like i have seen is just a form of trolling, yes there is a form of spell checking, but we are human it is okay if we make mistakes or forget a certain aspect of the toolbar can be used to spell check, a perfectly legible sentence is fine, Adding Fullstops in and capital letters, or one spelling mistake, and then criticizing them or using a snark remark is just trolling.

I generally find this happens to Early Posters by those who have a large amount of posts, the saying "Correlation does not imply causation" springs to mind, but it is an interesting thing i have noticed.

By all means correct "I LIEK CHOCOCOPOPS WID SPON,WACH MA 1337 HAXZOR SKILLZ!!1!111!"
That is a sin against the english language.

If there is a clear forum rules violation or someone is just plain being a dick, I'll report them. One of my top peaves that I will always report someone for is "tl;dr". To me, that's just rude.
