From what I've seen, letting people decide on what they want is never the world's best option. A wiser option is to subtly suggest to the people that what they want is what you offer while distracting them with shiny and/or blood-splattered displays of power and prowess. As such, I would be more than happy to run the state-owned penal coliseums, public executions, and also organise any festivals and parades in the honour of the wise and noble ruler. All I ask in exchange for this is a position on the cabinet with the title of "Minister of Public Conformation Assistance", if it pleases.

I can't really tell what government would be best. But personally, I say we do as the Romans did. We're smart enough to know what they did wrong, and we'll improve on it accordingly.

Still, there might be the occasional... troublemaker. Give me a seat of power and I can take care of things. I'm very thorough with dealing with people. Just give me the justification, and I can solve problems.

mandatory service in the armed forces to promote natural deference to authority in the population as well as a commitment to duty and patriotism to quell corruption in government. said government would be run by a democratically elected executive and council with immense power save the ability to alter an entrenched constitution, which would exist solely to guarantee the continued democracy. running for government would require a set of skill and intelligence tests, the criteria of which would be made by an entirely separate wing of government that is paid very well to eliminate chances of bribery and corruption. For safety, this 'test wing' would have numerous oversight committees and joining it would only be possible with a history of good merit in the civil service.

regarding the idea of everyone voting on everything: that sounds great in theory, but it means politicians will play to populist platforms that results in government thinking strictly in the short-term and making decisions based on popularity rather than how good an idea it is. it'd certainly suck if that happened in real life. /cough.
