I never understood why wearing hats in school is so taboo.I've heard that it was first introduced as a matter of courtesy, but that seems a little outdated. I'm not trying to say that courtesy is outdated of course, it's just that people don't wear their hats inside to be disrespectful, they just want to wear their damn hat.

My school claimed that hats were "distracting," yet allowed people to have literally green mohawks along with all sorts of other counter-culture/unusual hairstyles that were far more distracting than a simple cap.

We also allowed a huge variety of piercings, too, and shirts with distracting statements (as long as they weren't "obscene" of course >.>).

Full of hypocrisy, in my opinion.

I live in michigan too and when I asked a teacher that question he told me so people could avoid making gang sines with their hats and hoods. Apparently if my hat is at one angle it's fine, but if it's at a different angle shit be on.

As a person who loves hats, this is probably the biggest one for me.

They have to draw the line somewhere and society has put that line, in your society, at 18. Someone who is 17y, 364d is not yet 18y. The idea is that below the age of majority the teen/child isn't mature enough to really make a considered decision about a very adult issue. If you are 16-18 now, you will think I'm wrong but 5-10 years from now, I promise you will agree with this point.

In many societies breasts are considered erotic and signs of womanhood. Men's chests are not. There are many nations where breasts are not considered erotic and as such can be displayed without anyone blinking an eye.

Halooween is a once a year festival, or at least it used to be. Whatever it is now may be different from how it began but there is a purpose to it. Cosplay is only relevant to to the cosplayer and not society as a whole. And dressing up in weird costumes for day to day stuff is undeniably weird.

- I never understood why rats and mice are considered ugly, but hamsters are cute.

Traditionally they have been associated as vermin and plague carriers. They turned up in the dingiest places, bred uncontrollably and spread infections. Hamsters are cute, but gerbils are awesome.

My gf and I were kicked out of a bus transit station just for this, well that could be considered the cause of the interation between ourselves and transit security and I know that we were basically kicked out because cause I called the fat prick an envious nazi essentially, I suppose I didn't have as good a control on my temper when I 19, but still just the fact that the guy came up to us and told us "either don't do that, or take it somewhere else" all matter of factly. There is a polilte and adult way to deal with any situation.

OT: Talking to young kids about sex. They're gonna have to learn about it eventually, and at their age I doubt they'd do anything stupid. We usually give sexual education to those who are likely to be already having sex, it's probably a good idea for them to be familiar with it beforehand.

Why do people associate the color black with a dark brooding personality?

For modern society, I would guess it's because it's generally what Goths wear. Plus it's part of a fundamental human trait to do with the night(dark and black), where something might pounce on you and eat/mug you. Black just got seen as an "evil" colour,(shadows, the dark abysss, light vs dark, a black heart etc) which has just stuck there throughout history, I mean the Nazis wore all black, and they were pretty evil.

Not that I believe that people who wear all black fit any of that, just saying where it comes from, I wear all black myself, so y'know...

I do this without a single fuck given for how it looks. I've always loved climbing on things, and I genuinely don't care what people think about me when it comes to still doing it. I abide by lots of societal conventions, but not this one.

As for things I don't get, I have a real problem with Age of Consent laws, especially since the internet and expanding international society has made such a mockery of them.

I could get married to my first cousin and start banging her rotten from the age of 16 in Britain, but then if I went to some states in America suddenly it becomes all kinds of illegal statutory rape. They can't both be correct. I can't do one thing that's legal here, illegal there, and they are considered morally different. The same act can't be both, it's one or the other.

And it gets even more ridiculous within America. There I could marry my first cousin blah-di-blah from 14/15 in some states, then move to Washington and it's illegal. Effectively driving a car over an imaginary line in the dirt turns an act from totally acceptable to completely monstrous in the eyes of the law.

Age of Consent laws are one of the few laws that I think a convincing argument could be made for making them universal. But of course then America would get their way and it would be 18, despite the fact that more than half of the states of America don't follow that limit, we all just think they do because in California, it's 18, so in every movie/film/book ever made SoCalisation takes place.

Oh damn, I'm gonna hate when I turn that age and I suddenly have to stop playing games/watching kids shows like MLP and Adventure Time/building awesome shit with lego. If it makes a person happy, and it's not harming anyone then I reckon it's perfectly fine for the person to do it. But social taboos have made it so that that rule can't be enforced, because playing games is "immature" and you should go do taxes and file papers for the rest of your miserable, serious life.

I'm the former of course. I respect adults more if I learn they don't just do boring adults stuff, but find time to fit in a gaming session, or a lego session. Different people consider different things taboo. That's normal.

But society is strange sometimes. You walk down the street and notice random things.

For example, how the hell did public nudity become so taboo? Why did more "civilised" cultures come to disapprove of it? I can understand requiring clothes for specific things, but why the complete shift? Why are clothes now a requirement, rather than an option?

Any other examples?

When we became bipedal, the most prevalent female form, namely the ass, became not as prevalent anymore. Therefore females with big breasts became attractive because it reminded of an ass. But then, we put clothes on, and more clothes, and more clothes.

I believe the concept of certain words being vulgar in the English language occurred after the Norman invasion in the 11th century.

Before the Normans invaded, words like "shit", "fuck" and "****" were just the everyday, Germanic Anglo-Saxon words for those things, but when the Normans became the ruling class, proper people were expect to speak Norman French and the Germanic, Anglo-Saxon words were considered vulgar as it was the language of the commoners.

So in the case of the word shit, the vulgar commoners would refer to it as something like "scite" or "scitte", whereas the properly educated Norman speaking people would say something like "merde" (obviously not the Modern French word , but it's Norse-French equivalent).

I suppose as the language evolved into modern English, the old Germanic words stayed around, but retained their vulgar stigma and relegated into properly offensive swear words.

That's my understanding of it from what I was taught by my English teacher, many moons ago. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it makes sense.

I suspect that quite a few things that are considered taboo stem from class prejudices, with the actions of the poorer classes being shunned and made taboo by the ruling classes...

Things like excessive swearing, nudity, and displays of sexual affection in public are taboo for a good reason: Common courtesy.

That's not true. Sexuality being banished from the public sphere in any form is courtesy of Christianity, or perhaps better said, religion, and it's phobia towards anything sexual that results from the religious urge to want to control all women.

As for swearing, that's a psychological outlet for frustration. People who oppose swearing are ussually boring religious zealots, and people who are against excessive swearing just feel influenced negatively by all the frustration someone else is feeling, which isn't common courtesy either, but just something born out of perceiving something as a nuisance.

Yes, but it's still common courtesy as well as common sense not to heavily french or dry hump eachother in public, or to go around yelling a screaming in the nude. Atleast, it is to me.
