Does anyone know why Pluto became a dwarf planet?

Apparently there was another object that was bigger than Pluto but was not called a planet, therefore, instead of adding another planet to the solar system, they decided to reclassify Pluto.

Basically, everyone used the term "planet" as a long-lasting historical term, being just a large lump of whatever orbiting a sun.

However, there was no strict scientific definition of what a planet was. The discovery of other large objects that didn't really fit what was thought of by "planets", "asteroids" and so on made it necessary to fix a definition of planet. So they made a strict definition of planet, and Pluto was on the wrong side of the line.

With a bit of reading up, it seems a "planet" must have cleared it's orbit of small lumps of rock, ice and whatever else, by having sufficient gravity to attract them all in so they collide and become part of the planet. If the celestial body lacks sufficient size and mass, it can't or hasn't yet cleared its orbit of these particles, and so it's called a dwarf planet.

A good one my chemistry teacher taught us (when we were taking general science) was as follows:

(this is from before they ditched pluto as a planet)

I've never really had to come up with a devise to memorise them... I guess it's just cause I like astronomy. I can name their moons too and various constellations and even a few galaxies and nebular... it's The Galaxy Catalogue that makes it difficult, who's gonna remember things like NGC 3982?

LEAVE PLUTO ALONE! LEAVE IT ALOOONE!!!

Seriously though, when I grew up I always learned Pluto was a planet too. If anything I thought we'd one day have 10 planets in the solar system (as soon as they found 'Planet X'), not 8. Ah well.

you should add Pluto because if it was a planet 10 years ago when i learned them it sure as hell is now
exactly... Honestly what are people thinking? Its no wonder that adults know different things to us and different facts, methods etc... They keep telling us different things all the damn time.

PLUTO IS A PLANET! It might be small, but its still a main planet!

I just... know all the names of the planets, 8 names are just as easy to remember as 8 random words that start with the same letter.

My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets

Because it really does. And Pluto is and will always be a planet, no matter what science tells me!

I still go with;

My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets.

Because when I learned, Pluto was still a planet, and I be damned changing my method because science decided that it's a little too small.

Pluto is Freakin' Tiny. Approximately a fifth the mass of the Earth's Moon and a third its volume. Also, the names are easy to remember. Even the order is. I never needed a naming method.
