Mods are helpful, as are bucket brigades. Trying to be mature is a good way to stop them, which I would argue is the best way to deal with them.

If you disagree with someone, don't insult them. If they insult you, ignore it.
If they're simply denying what you say or cannot be convinced, then there's no point in arguing any longer. And of course, be prepared to admit you're wrong.

If you're a moderator or admin, locking/deleting the topic and banning those who need to be banned.

If you're not, then just don't go near it. Anyone who gets involved in the flame-war is merely adding fuel to the 'fire' (there's a few reasons it's called a flame-war, after all.), so just stay away from it and try and starve it. Don't get involved. Just alert the mods.
