Mods are helpful, as are bucket brigades. Trying to be mature is a good way to stop them, which I would argue is the best way to deal with them.

Ignoring them. There's a picture out there somewhere saying the best way to defeat a troll is not to feed them.

Humour, how can people continue to flame if they're laughing?

Or just stop posting. A flame war requires a minimum of two people!

Agree to disagree or just stop posting. If they aren't trolling, it's going to take a lot more than a stranger on the internet to convince them of your opinion.

Not getting into flame-wars in the first place?

If you disagree with someone, don't insult them. If they insult you, ignore it.
If they're simply denying what you say or cannot be convinced, then there's no point in arguing any longer. And of course, be prepared to admit you're wrong.
I agree.

Just keep things civil, and the flame war never starts up. Don't get mad, and voice your opinion logically.

But the last point of damage must be done by fire or acid or the beast starts to regenerate!!!

Seriously though, Poommanchu is right, "Don't feed em."

If you're a moderator or admin, locking/deleting the topic and banning those who need to be banned.

If you're not, then just don't go near it. Anyone who gets involved in the flame-war is merely adding fuel to the 'fire' (there's a few reasons it's called a flame-war, after all.), so just stay away from it and try and starve it. Don't get involved. Just alert the mods.

Go to thread: Step 1

Report: Step 2

Leave: Step 3

It's not that hard. You could of course go with the "an oil fire can be put out with a bigger explosion", but that's just an idiotic idea in this scenario.

Locking or deleting a forum if your a mod. Pretty much the only way to do it. Telling people to 'grow up' doesn't do it these days.

Compare both sides to Nazis.

Goodwin's Law: As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1. Once this happens, said discussion is then over.
