Which games have you played that did the best job in putting you in the game world?

I'd have to say that Republic Commando was the first game that completelly drew me in via a spectacular HUD. The entire screen looked convincingly like the interior of your helmet, especially the little energy wipes cleaning all the blood and guts from your viewscreen, and the way it cracked and repaired itself when damaged.

F.E.A.R. 2 also does a pretty good job via the same method of providing a spectacular helmet display.

Dead Space warrants an obvious nod due to the entire presentation of information via holograms, removing the HUD completelly.

Halo 3. Makes you feel like you're actually staring out of the Master Chief's visor.

Metroid Prime as well. The HUD's more dynamic.

I'm a fan of more classic HUDs. They don't need to look ultra-realistic IMO.

Amazingly, Heavy Rain

Sure, it's 3rd person, but it puts me into those roles so well that I'm as afraid as they are, as scared and worried and shocked and happy and sad as they are. I freaked out and shot someone because I freaked out during the scene. I also find myself looking for the QTEs and stuff to interact with in real life.

I agree with Metroid Prime, subtle things, like seeing the reflection of Samus' eyes make it immersive.

most realistic HUD: the helmet display in bioshock 2
most efficient HUD: the hud behind your car in split/second (i think, it isn't out yet :p)

I liked the HUD for Far Cry 2 but that's not to say that I am a chronic advocate of no HUD what-so-ever. I just felt that Far Cry 2 was very fitting with the rest of the experience.

I also liked the HUD in Bioshock 1+2 as well as Fallout 3.

My favorite HUD remains the one from Red Faction: Guerilla.

Ammo counter next to the targeting reticule. Health Bar centered, and slightly below the top.

Zoom-able in and out minimap (D-pad Up and Down). GPS arrows ON THE ACTUAL GROUND, so you don't look from map to road.

Dead Space. The experience was that more frightening, when you had to pan the camera back to reveal the cleverly placed health bar and stasis bars on his back. Also, the weapon counters are done very well. Technically, there are no traditional HUD's, which just makes it better.

Or the steam that builds up on the visor, or the rain drops that drip off, or the water that comes off after you get out of the water or stand under a waterfall, and i think the lava did the same thing.

Prime gets my vote

Dead Space has the most interesting and creative HUD, and imma let it finish, but Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising had one of the most realistic and scalable HUD's of all time, of all time, people. Thank you.

IMO those "helmet" huds are horrible.

When I play a game I want to see the world, not some cheap effect that 1) requires processing power 2) is nearly guaranteed to hide something vital behind a bright or dark line and 3) it's often barely visible, making the whole effect a waste of development time.

"Character HUDs" are even worse. I'm looking at the action, not my character. So whenever health/ammo information isn't in an easy to see place(a moving character is NOT one of those places) then it adds fake difficulty and for me the game becomes unplayable.

I wanna go with Twisted Metal Black.
How come? I haven't played it, so could you elaborate?
Well it's a car combat game...in which the HUD has a Inventory and Health status in on the lower left hand portion of the screen...and in the upper right there's a radar and Enemy health status as if you were driving in the car.

I really liked Metroid and Dead Space HUDs, but honestly I find I prefer no HUD at all. If I want an aiming reticle, I'll look down the sights. I thought Dead Space did a clever job with the HP bars, it's non intrusive and makes sense. BioShock, if you consider it, has the HP and Eve bars just sitting there... sort of doesn't make sense but obviously they're helpful to the player.

In MW2, I've become addicted to playing Hardcore Team Deathmatch and one of my favorite aspects of it is no HUD at all including no reticle and only a map if you have a UAV up. If the game gives you goggles or a helmet then I don't mind having the HP stuff showing so long as it's a part of it a-la Metroid. I can't recall exactly but FEAR 2 had a similarly well done HUD.

I like the one from uncharted 1 & 2. Very efficient, and your ammo total updated after every shot, which I love.

Problem is whenever you get wounded the screen turns white and it's impossible to aim.

Ninja!

Even though it was 3rd person I was definitely more drawn into it.

If it's still being developed I can't wait for Aliens: Colonial Marines - apparently it's going to be completely HUD-free, so players have to actually count their rounds / guesstimate their health level etc.
No HUD at all? Wow, that would be a very interesting experience. Either a very involving, deep mechanic, or a frustrating, lazy lack of a simple implementation, we shall see...

I think you will find that I am already part of aforementioned usergroup my friend.

But allright, I've only run with STALKER Complete 2009, perhaps I should do a rerun some time.
