Easily Brutal Legend for me, I got so deeply engrossed in the world that I nearly cried at the end.

And yes I am a metalhead

Metroid Prime as well. The HUD's more dynamic.
This, this, a thousand times, this. I also really liked Mirror's Edge's no-HUD setup, but I'd have sucked at it without the blue dot.

Dead Space has the most interesting and creative HUD, and imma let it finish, but Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising had one of the most realistic and scalable HUD's of all time, of all time, people. Thank you.
While, technically you have no HUD after Normal difficulty, but anyways......

Dead Space. The experience was that more frightening, when you had to pan the camera back to reveal the cleverly placed health bar and stasis bars on his back. Also, the weapon counters are done very well. Technically, there are no traditional HUD's, which just makes it better.
Ninja!

Even though it was 3rd person I was definitely more drawn into it.

If it's still being developed I can't wait for Aliens: Colonial Marines - apparently it's going to be completely HUD-free, so players have to actually count their rounds / guesstimate their health level etc.
No HUD at all? Wow, that would be a very interesting experience. Either a very involving, deep mechanic, or a frustrating, lazy lack of a simple implementation, we shall see...
I think they're really trying to encapsulate the feel of being there. Even in the Aliens film, the basic armed marines didn't have a nifty futursitic HUD (except for the IR eye-piece which helped no one in the hive fire-fight). They did have those lovely red LED ammo counters on the side of the M40 Pulse Rifle.

I'm hoping they might introduce a mechanic where you turn the weapon to the side slightly so you can see this read-out. You may even have to switch between holding your rifle and consulting the Motion-Tracker. Heaven help average FPS players if they introduce an obstruction/weapon-jam quick time event when you're being swarmed by Aliens!
I'd like that kind of mechanic. But I can definitely imagine how the jamming could really throw off players, especially considering how hostile most players are to them. However, I'm still fixated on the idea of physically taking the magazine out of a gun to see how many bullets are left in it.

Hmm nice never heard of that game, but I like the idea... kinda. I think if it took a bit from Dead Space as in an LED counter on the gun itself, maybe you have your extra mags on your belt so you can see just how many clips you've got left - that would be cool. If the only way to count my bullets was to pull out the mag, I'd probably just shoot till it clicks because regardless you'll be collecting whatever ammo you can. Also, if you reload you lose the ammo left in the clip... or maybe you have to reload your clips. Plus, some people with mad skills with guns can tell how much ammo is in the clip by it's weight. Anyway, no HUD sounds good to me! mostly... ;)

Not quite, on "Hardcore", some elements of the HUD are gone, but there is a skeleton radar. Only on the highest difficulty is the HUD 99% gone, even then, the command wheel displays certain HUD elements.

Which games have you played that did the best job in putting you in the game world?

I'd have to say that Republic Commando was the first game that completelly drew me in via a spectacular HUD. The entire screen looked convincingly like the interior of your helmet, especially the little energy wipes cleaning all the blood and guts from your viewscreen, and the way it cracked and repaired itself when damaged.

F.E.A.R. 2 also does a pretty good job via the same method of providing a spectacular helmet display.

Dead Space warrants an obvious nod due to the entire presentation of information via holograms, removing the HUD completelly.
I swear I just had a conversation with my friend about this, specifically mentioning this and Metroid Prime. It's these little things that remind you that the HUD is actually technology ingame, and not some magic visual superimposed over the screen.
