Is anyone else sick of playing as humans or the similar humans (Elf's smarter and more agile, or Dwarfs tougher and stronger). in RPG's with vast bask stories, or other games. why not allow more choices for humanoids or other creatures, this is my pet hate and has re surfaced after playing Mass Effect (for the first time) and seeing mass effect 2, as well as my first D and D character, a Bone Controling Minotaur.

So my question is are you sick of playing as humans where there is lore that has other creatures, and what would you really enjoy a playing as in a game.

I'm a bit confused on what you mean, but I like playing as Dwarfs, they are awesome.

The key here is relatability. Playing as a monster is cool and all, but in RPGs there's a lot of character development going on. Most people have a hard time relating to non-human characters. Particularly in RPGs, where-in other races tend to have vastly different cultures. Take Mass Effect for example, with Krogan's having an incredibly unstable and violent society, or Turians having a heavily militaristic side. I'm not saying you can't make amazing characters out of those races, but many people need to relate to a character to like them, and sometimes that means they need to be human.

Yes, it just boils down to me being sick of humans. I see them enough in my life.
At the heart of the issue lies this point. What you're essentially asking for is a purely cosmetic change. That they can do, but I think that it would feel shallow if they did that. These are shumans, they look like aliens but speak English in American accents and have culture that is almost identical to North American culture.

I mostly play as a magic user, often of the human variety. Though I don't give the whole thing much thought.

I select my class, gender, appearance and then get on with playing the game.

It would be nice to play as something other than a human, pointy eared human or short hairy human in RPGs not part of the Elder Scrolls series or an MMORPG, but for some reason or other, game makers seem to think that we all need someone to identify with in Fantasy or Sci-Fi RPGs...as if we don't get that in nearly every other videogame from every genre ever made.

I'd actually like to play the Giant rather than the giant slayer, a tiny squirrel-like critter who hunts men or a dragon driving away the heavily armed and armored band of heroes trying to swipe it's treasure horde. Something...anything other than the same old perspective every time.

Pretty sure you could reskin yourself as a rabbit quite easily.

Relatibility is one thing (as Fightgarr so eloquently put it), but one another is that humans tend to be the best race possible on the long run. Sure, many races have inherent bonuses to stats or skills, but they usually pay for these in one manner or another. And rarely, in sufficiently long game, does that tradeoff actually benefit the character. This applies to both D&D, nWOD (as mages could be classified as humans), RuneQuest as well as Mass Effect.

Humans are just that kickass.

I actually prefer playing as human in most games. I don't even like playing as an elf or dwarf to often. Couldn't you play as a lizard man in Morrowind, that's about as far away from humans I've seen it.

Nah, I've always preferred humans from D&D to Warhammer to Dragon Age. As far as I see it, humans have the highest highs and the lowest lows in fantasy. Plus I'd rather be a dogged human soldier against all the exotic beasts rather than the other way round.

I always play Human anyway...

Although I can see why others would want the variation to be greater - but by then you're having to do the classic humans/dwarves/elves and fit in another brand new race.

With massive games like Dragon Age, that might be a bit too much for the devlopers (given the amount of lore they created).

They put humans in because they're familiar and comfortably boring.
And so you can see them bang aliens
