Well, you couldn't even get me to pirate that piece of trash film.

I'm safe from the lawsuit.

I don't pirate anything. Not since I was like, 14, at least.

This very mediocre movie never diserved an Oscar...
Poor people who are now going to have to fork in a ton of cash because they figured it'd be good.
I actually thought it was quite good. Better than Avatar on at least a few levels. Not the best film, but hardly a disaster.

I wonder when people are going to stop complaining about piracy...?

Why it is against the law is beyond me... And what is even more confusing is that most people seem to think that these companies have valid points.
These people created something, they deserve to be paid for it. If you can't afford it, you can't have it. It's as simple as that, and its fully within their right to complain and/or take legal action when people essentially steal their work and don't give them any money. I'm not saying they'll be successful considering the scale of a lawsuit this big, but it is fully within their right.

As for why piracy is illegal, allow me to give you an example. You spend a year, maybe two, maybe three, on creating a work, let's say a film. You invest millions of dollars, pounds, whatever into creating it and are relying on it to make money. You deserve to be given money for that film for every person who sees it, same how restaurants or shops deserve to be given money for every person who eats their food. When someone pirates something, they are violating that right of yours to make money out of something you create. Wouldn't you like to see them punished if you make a very measly amount of money despite millions of people watching it?

I believe the term is ''They just pwned your ass''? Thats what you get for pirating stuff!
They just pwned their own asses with lawyers fees. ISP's detecting pirates are notoriously unreliable and turn up a massive amount of false positives(the last time BAM(BREIN's belgian sister company) tried something like this they ended up with 500 innocents and 2 pirates) and a lot of the actual pirates are just going to laugh at them, safely from our side of the atlantic where your corporate dictatorship doesn't apply. The few that are actually within sueing range will not make this operation worthwhile. Sueing people for billions doesn't work when they aren't ever going to make 0.5% of that in their lifetime.

You have a problem with how the Internet, Mr. Hurt Locker. You believe that you are special, that somehow the rules do not apply to you. Obviously you are mistaken. This series of tubes is one of the top entertainment in the world because every single user understands that people will always BitTorrent. Thus, if a film has a problem, the Internet has a problem. The time has come to make a choice, Mr. Hurt Locker. Either you choose to drop these unwinnable lawsuits, on time, from this day forth ? or you choose to hand back your Oscar for being nothing but a mediocre film. Do I make myself clear?

-Yeah, cookie for who knows where that long-assed monologue was ripped from.
The office scene in the first Matrix movie?

Changed for safety reasons. I think Hurt Locker is going to have a pretty harsh time.

Interesting when you factor in that the film only did a limited theater run, at it's highest it was only on 500 screens over the US.
Oh, so is that why my friend downloaded it so he could watch it? Where I live we never get special releases. If you want to see a movie in 3D, drive an hour; IMAX, it's in the next state.

While im not going to freely admit to downloading illegally. I will say my tv is not connected to anything other than my pc and my xbox. And im up to date with lost hehe.

Anyway that being said I have a dvd collection all originals that numbers around 1100 atm. Its not always financially viable to buy the dvds you want right away. And I more than do my dues when it comes to buying legit stuff.
Not to burst your bubble or anything, but ABC.com has every episode of Lost up for free (thats how I keep up, even though I'm behind.) So you're bragging about pirating something that doesn't need to be pirated, lol.

I don't agree with pirating but I think this is the wrong way to go about it. Really, in my mind the people providing should be the ones getting in trouble. Didn't Napster try this a while back?

I saw it in the theater.

Also as far as China goes, when I visited the town I was in had no movie theaters because no one would buy tickets. They just pirate them all, in the internet cafe's.

Little do they realize that by making a huge stunt like this go public, that they are asking people "Hey, over here! Pirate this movie for teh lulz plz!"

Well, I'd guess the big thing is that with a limited run they were relying on video sales to generate the serious profit from this movie (which seemed to meet with critical acclaim, but popular acclaim). I can see their issue.

On the other hand I think the assumption that all of these pirated copies actually cost them that number of sales is incorrect.

It will be interesting to see what happens, but really I think both sides of it are kind of ridiculous.

Good thing I just rented it then, a movie that mediocre isn't worth the space on my hard drive...

No, we watched the same movie you did. It just simply wasn't very good.

From the percentage they are talking about, only 1 in 333 people will be sued. I would say the danger zone for being sued is those who downloaded it right after the academy awards, since that's when these law firm begin to monitor.
Where did you see the date when they started to monitor the torrents? I hadn't seen that information anywhere, at least so far...

This is a bit like arresting drug addicts instead of the supplier.
Why don't they simply shut down the torrent sites? What noble purpose do they serve?
Exactly. This is what really gets me.

I think that they are failing to see the point here. Films, Television, Games, etc, all forms of media need to at the very least offer digital downloads of their product. It won't stop all the pirates, but let's face it, you got to give the people what they want. If 15 million people dl'd this game, even if only 10% of them would have paid money for a digital version, that's still money they weren't getting.
It's been said before, but not every pirated copy is a lost sale. Punishing people that might actually want to buy the product legitimately but don't have any other way of getting a digital copy is just dumb and counter productive.
If they want to stop piracy, or at least make it more difficult:

1) Offer the product digitally
2) Shut down the sites
3) ???
4) Profit!?
