Hi Escapists,
something is bugging me.
Why is the internet ignoring Devil's Third? (And more specifically perhaps why is the Escapist community not talking about it as it seems to be running its mouth about Nintendo all day long
)
Are we all really such sheep that a blistering bad review by IGN or Gamespot (not sure which came first) can completely suffocate any interest in a game? Even if said game is by Tomonobu Itagaki. The creator of Ninja Gaiden Black? Do folks really believe a pimple faced reviewer over Itagakis word that all his know how went into this game?
Now don't get me wrong I am not saying he did get it right, but why is there no intelligent discourse about it?
Have people played it? Have you seen any footage and if yes, what about it tells you that the game is not worth looking into. Me? I think the footage looks fine.
I actually think the game plays fine too. There isn't the technical finesse I expected, but the combat is competent. For my taste he should have focused more on single player AI and combat engine than the multiplayer but it works fine. And for those who want to get into it, there is the multiplayer which I understand is a lot of fun. (I only looked into it briefly and it was all about guns. I like to use my Katana and I was bacon, so it aint for me, but it looked fine)
See, I didn't even get the hate for DNF. I thought it was an OK B-Movie like experience. But I understood the criticism of some aspects of it like the misogynism, the weapon limit, lackluster online... I thought none of them were game breaking, but at least people were making an informed decision not to like it.
This game? Is 10x better than that. It has style, innovative and comepetent (if too simplistic, espcially coming from Itagaki) combat, decent bosses, apparently fun online, ...
Folks were raving about no more Heroes. Me too. Guess what, DT has some of the style. All of the attitude. And arguably better combat.
Or take somthing like Uncharted. With clunky ass combat. Braindead story. Your mom's sense of humor. How come people are all over games like that? To me, running out from cover and stabbing enemies in the face sounds like quite the step up from John Wayne style fisticuffs.
I get it, DT is a mature title with bad reviews on the Wii U. Of course a run of the mill gamer will not run out and get it. But as a gaming community we are failing hard if we don't challenge the big site's reviews even for a game that comes from a creator with a proven pedigree.
What am I missing. Am I overestimating Ninja Gaiden's reputation and fan base? Am I looking in the wrong places for balanced discussion of the game? Are we all waiting for the US release?
Sorry 'bout the rant
