Hi Escapists,

something is bugging me.

Why is the internet ignoring Devil's Third? (And more specifically perhaps why is the Escapist community not talking about it as it seems to be running its mouth about Nintendo all day long :))

Are we all really such sheep that a blistering bad review by IGN or Gamespot (not sure which came first) can completely suffocate any interest in a game? Even if said game is by Tomonobu Itagaki. The creator of Ninja Gaiden Black? Do folks really believe a pimple faced reviewer over Itagakis word that all his know how went into this game?

Now don't get me wrong I am not saying he did get it right, but why is there no intelligent discourse about it?

Have people played it? Have you seen any footage and if yes, what about it tells you that the game is not worth looking into. Me? I think the footage looks fine.

I actually think the game plays fine too. There isn't the technical finesse I expected, but the combat is competent. For my taste he should have focused more on single player AI and combat engine than the multiplayer but it works fine. And for those who want to get into it, there is the multiplayer which I understand is a lot of fun. (I only looked into it briefly and it was all about guns. I like to use my Katana and I was bacon, so it aint for me, but it looked fine)

See, I didn't even get the hate for DNF. I thought it was an OK B-Movie like experience. But I understood the criticism of some aspects of it like the misogynism, the weapon limit, lackluster online... I thought none of them were game breaking, but at least people were making an informed decision not to like it.

This game? Is 10x better than that. It has style, innovative and comepetent (if too simplistic, espcially coming from Itagaki) combat, decent bosses, apparently fun online, ...

Folks were raving about no more Heroes. Me too. Guess what, DT has some of the style. All of the attitude. And arguably better combat.

Or take somthing like Uncharted. With clunky ass combat. Braindead story. Your mom's sense of humor. How come people are all over games like that? To me, running out from cover and stabbing enemies in the face sounds like quite the step up from John Wayne style fisticuffs.

I get it, DT is a mature title with bad reviews on the Wii U. Of course a run of the mill gamer will not run out and get it. But as a gaming community we are failing hard if we don't challenge the big site's reviews even for a game that comes from a creator with a proven pedigree.

What am I missing. Am I overestimating Ninja Gaiden's reputation and fan base? Am I looking in the wrong places for balanced discussion of the game? Are we all waiting for the US release?

Sorry 'bout the rant :)

Devil's what now?

Huh. Looks like Generic Action Game: The Game.

Oh, and it's a WiiU exclusive. Hah.

Well, I'm done discussing it. That was fun.

Good contribution!

If you have one more post in you could you PLEASE help me with names of some of the implied other similar generic action games. Because I would probably enjoy them.

p.s. the multiplayer is far from a Wii U exclusive but will be coming out as f2p on PC later on.

Pretty much this I should think. Not a huge amount of people have WiiUs. Couple that with the fact that the game has apparently been reviewed fairly poorly and you end up with the current situation. I'd very vaguely heard the name of this game months ago. Wasn't aware it was a WiiU game or anything. By all accounts is been poorly received by critics and only very averagely received by player reviews.

As for this:

In my case, yes. Because I've never played a Ninja Gaiden game and was never particularly interested in them so saying its from the same guy who made that means literally nothing to me. Couldn't say what it means for anyone else of course.

Okay.

It looks like that Deadpool game. Except without Deadpool.
It looks like WH40k Space Marine except with more mobility and less space marines.
It looks like a bit like Saint's Row 3 without any of the stuff that people like about Saint's Row games.
It looks like Vanquish but ugly and with more melee.
It looks like 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand but with melee.
It looks a lot like Shadow Warrior but in third person.

I mean we've got Tats McToughguy shooting guns in a throughly generic manner and swinging swords in an even more generic manner. The level design looks cramped and linear. I don't demand every game be open world, but a bit wriggle room is nice. It looks graphically shit, especially for a current gen game. Looks more like a Xbox360 launch title. Those blood effects look especially bad. It's hard to tell from a video, but the controls look floaty as fuck.

It just doesn't surprise me at all to see this game drift right under the collective radar.

I nearly did a spit take thinking it was out and I didn't know. But after a quick look at Amazon. Nope, just like Yoshi, Canada aint getting that for a while. So far it says Dec 21'st which is Amazon for "We don't fucking know"

Christ dude, do you ever like anything...do you also take issue with certain colors too? Like Green for being too mainstream and everywhere meanwhile magenta is a much more sophisticated color but damn it for not getting itself out there? I rarely ever just see you go "Yep it was okay" "I had a tone of fun with this" You always have to be cynical and dismiss something as shit or deconstruct it.

Well, this is the first I've heard of it. Since I don't own a Wii U, it may not be very relevant, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to look into it, considering I'm in the middle of replaying Ninja Gaiden Sigma right now.

Whew! Talk about lopsided reviews. I was just in Metacritic. The user reivews are like a mirror image of the critic reviews. I'll have to look into the reviews themselves later.

combat is bland and generic
bosses are just bullet sponge versions of the regular enemies
Ivan is a horrible main character and annoys me to no end
environments are basically empty rooms with some cover/obstacles scattered around but feel dull
damage is all over the place. The same attack can sometimes take a huge portion of your HP while other times it barely takes any damage at all
I haven't tried multiplayer and honestly, I don't want to, the combat is just boring, I rather play Bayonetta 2 or Razor's Edge again

I find the bosses really good and challenging. But then I haven't used many bullets on them.

There are spikes in the difficulty, yes.
Environments are no worse than in NG3. I actually really enjoyed some of the japanese inspired environments. Of course no match for Bayonetta 2. But what game is?

And in terms of rather replaying a Ninja Gaiden or Bayonetta game, maybe it's just me, but if that's the measuring stick then pretty much every game that comes out comes up short. I'd rather replay those games than play most other games...

Maybe I am misunderstanding you. I know nothing about the space marine game but all of the other games you mention I have either played or find interesting. Mentioning Vanquish is practically a knighting of any action game mentioned within 6 degrees of forum posts of it. I was asking about the generic and boring games in the genre this one looked like.

Well, I watched some gameplay. All I have to say is, why play this when you can play Vanquish? Vanquish is faster, has some interesting weapons, has smooth responsive controls (Honestly, that's supposed to be a staple of this guy's work), and it had the awesome slo mo feature that pretty much gave me a reason to play cover based shooters again. My experience with Devil's Third is pretty limited, so I'm curious, aside from blood and boobs, what does this game have that Vanquish doesn't?

Well for one thing there is blood and boobs :) It's not a sterile scifi shooter, it's very much got the Itagaki touch that way. Which people can complain about but Ninja Gaiden and DOA seem to do just fine with it to this day.

And I will not argue it's better than Vanquish. No game does Vanquish better than Vanquish. There are differences though. It is a lot slower and less twitchy. I wish he had amped up the AI intelligence to match that style but maybe I need to try playing it on hard. And it that helps, it has Ninja Gaiden 2 type oblitarions. i.e. bloody finishing moves. When you use his charged attacks you can even kind of chain them together like in NG3.

But no, I will not claim it's better than those games. It is still a lot of fun though and breaks up my umpteeth replay of Sigma 2. And you are all absolutely right to challenge its merits and to be sceptical. It was just the complete silence that got to me.

Okay, so you like those games and you like Devil's Third. Cool. You're allowed to. I shall permit it.

I'm not here to convince you that they're bad games. That would be a waste of my time and yours. And you're sure as shit not going to convince me that they're good.

Your original post was asking why this particular game has not received the attention you seem to think it deserves. My answer to that is that I think it looks generic, dull, not particularly well made and it's on a console I do not and in all likelihood will not ever own. These are my reasons for not discussing it. Other people who do not discuss it may share my reasons or they may well have their own. You'll have to ask them.

Umm... yes, I do indeed like things.

Coffee liqueur flavoured ice cream is delicious, Mad Max: Fury Road was a fun movie, well proportioned breasts are a marvelous thing, I love The Last of Us and kittens are practically proof of a benevolent God.

I have no idea what you're getting at with the colours stuff.

I never said that YOU should play other games or that Ryu was a better character or that my experience and thoughts on the game are absolute for everyone else. I was stating my opinion on the game, I find the combat dull and boring when compared to DMC, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, etc. BUT that is my opinion and should in no way shape or form dictate your own nor should you question my opinion of the game. It's not a Me vs You cenario... or at least I don't think that's what you intended right? You just want to hear some opinions on the game regardless if they are in accordance or against your own

Here's a reason why; Nobody cares.

The game looks like crumbs, and nobody's talking about it because the general opinion is likely that it is crumbs.

Or are you genuinely going sulk like that because people like the games they like, but not the one you like? 'Those stupid idiots liking stupid games that aren't my awesome super game that nobody appreciates. *hmpf*'

I didn't have to watch a review of this to see it was shit, I just had to look at 5 seconds of footage.

But atleast it was good for one thing...

Because why would I take a chance on a game that has been panned (or if we're being very generous and adding in user reviews - mixed) when the Wii U already has top-tier stuff like Bayonetta available?

And yes, I've seen footage of it, it looks shite.

The point of my post was that I was astonished nobody is discussing the game. Not that I believe it is good. Your initial post came across like the game was a lost cause. You didnt even really respond. You just stated your opinion. Which is fair. Your opinion that is. The fact that you state it in list form uncommented is debatable. I merely responded in kind. But no hard feelings, just trying to get a read on why this thing is falling through the cracks so hard.
