There's a word you don't hear every day. Anyways low-content post or not this story must be told.

Today I met a couple of students. Their majors were in biology, just like me. Yet when I heard them talk it was the most astonishing thing I'd ever heard. And I listened to Kent Hovind. The guy thinks we should keep drugs illegal because the dirty (Mostly counterfeit) money it brings in is, in his exact words, "helping the economy". The other one was complaining about the "Hard" curriculum, and grueling hours. This coming from the person who hadn't shown up for FYIS in almost a month. She kept whining about how they wouldn't hold her hand throughout the entire lecture.

It seemed like they were forced to sit through a week of FOX news and doomsday preachers because they kept going on about how this is the worst generation , and how the world has gone to shit. World war III was thrown in there somewhere. But the real kicker is when I asked them a question so simple, there should have been no need to ask it. "Creation or Evolution"? The one that skipped constantly gave an answer you'd expect, the other one (Mind you biology major) said "Creation of course". Asking me the same tired question you hear from the less creative creationist crowd. "Where did you come from? And what about your mom? And her mom? Who made them?" I was at a loss for words. I had no choice but to get up and leave the room (Professor was 30 minutes late. Rules said I could go at that point). If this is even part of the next generation of biologists I pity the world.

EDIT: We are all in our first year. None of us have taken a biology course yet. It doesn't come up till the second year.

TL,DR....

Kidding. Personally believe in both creation and evolution. Anyhow yes our generation is getting worse, but not completely. I think we just have more distractions than previous generations and more publicly known ways to spoon feed the masses their daily bowls of stupid.

I agree. And, I gotta say, "Spoon feed the masses their daily bowls of stupid"? That, my friend, is pure gold. I gotta remember that one.

Direct them towards Aristotle and Epicurus.

THE DUMBNESS. IT BUUUUUURNS.

Edit: I say what I said because I recently had to write a paper on refuting a few of the arguments put forward in Summa Theologica and Aristotle had many helpful things to say on the subject of God. Epicurus just had the 'Problem of Evil'. Which is still helpful! Get them to consider that.

Science for educational institutions, creationism for church. Do not mix them. It ends in tears.

How does a biologist study biology and not believe in evolution. Isn't that like me (a physics graduate) believing that the world is 6000 years old and orbited by the sun?

We're both first year students so I doubt he has any idea how biology works at this point. We don't get that class till second year (Weird I know).

That is why I only associate with computer scientists and chemists. They may be batshit insane, but at least they're not dumb. (Exept for the idiots, of course, but you'll find those anywhere.)

No, you should be mixing ethics relevent to science. Everything else belongs in studies specific to philosophy. Or on certain forums. Or anywhere but a bloody science lecture.

I propose a compromise to creation vs evolution, stated using the (heavily paraphrased) words of the founder of the idea of Evolution, Charles Darwin, which he wrote at the end of "On the Origin of Species." "What a wonder it is that God had the foresight to create creatures capable of adapting to their ever changing surroundings" Again, very heavily paraphrased, but the gist of the matter is that God couldn't just create a world and hope it worked out, he would have had to create it in a way so that everything could work and survive according to the scientific laws

He won't get far. I've heard this sort of story before, and the first professor he talks to about this will tell him he has no business being in a science class if he 's just going to reject what it teaches.

... so what would(n't) a chemistry graduate believe?? -_-

OT: ...?!?! You sure they were biology majors and not a couple of... other... students who just walked in the wrong lecture theatre??

...!! Thank you, I'll take that for the compliment that it is...! (Chemistry graduate)

Also, there's no need for the word 'but'... and you know it, probably! =P

Personally I get flabbergasted when I see this.
See - the thing is, I usually complain about how overly politically correct we always are, but this worry's me quite a bit. See - the fact a future scientist isn't allowed to believe in a theory (which it is - YES I KNOW IT HAS A TON OF PROOF BUT really it's the entire principle the matters!) is kind of why there are so many annoying things, because just a few people cannot be asked to take an opinion.

I mean hell - a LOT of people have a mixed between evolution and creationism - myself included and you may find this for a lot of the people here *cough second comment*, i.e - the fact evolution makes sense - of course! - but sometimes it leaves holes and there's still a hell of a lot of other things to consider.

Still, the rest of what you said makes sense - with all of the fox news on TV, people do tend to get their mind blown, I mean hell you can only take so much stupidity before your mind explodes, but hell - it's political correctness and the right to strange views that makes us as a society today... or you lot at least, I'm British and would probably rather go under a police state than have to listen to fox news here! XD

Research supposedly shows that each generation is fundamentally more intelligent than the last, crime is at an all-time low (U.S.) and the Internet has increased the flow of information drastically. As an unfortunate side effect, the Internet has also allowed us to pool all of our horrifying stories of rampant stupidity and generally disgusting/inhumane behavior in one place for all to read. The end result is that the world seems to be worse than it ever was before.

News flash: it's not. We just hear about a lot more of the shit than we used to. It can be a lot to stomach.

It's not what he believes that bothered me. It's how little thought actually went into it. If that is the best series of questions he can come up with he obviously has no clue how it works. To me it really doesn't matter what anyone believes as long as they've thought it through really well.

I think this is more a example of great stupidity and ponciness not some great revelation on the earths current generation and if your taking it as the former, your also, a ponce.
