In the UK we have Game, I went to buy Resi 5 from them got home found the disc of my "brand new" game scratched to hell so I naturally went to return it they said I damaged it and for a small fee they could repair it if I left it with them for an hour so I did, when I returned a different member of staff said they'd had no copies of Resi handed in and that if I continued to cause a disturbance that they'd call security.

My friend bought a new PS3 from gamestop, when we got to the car it was very much the opposite of new, dusty with some scratches and it had rubber bands holding the bags on, after a small argument he got another one. It's because of this reason and another that I don't shop at gamestop anymore.

The other reason: they sell used games new. Those games that are gutted on the wall are not new in any respect, employees can take the games out and play them at their house for up to 4 days. Well if that's new I guess they wont mind me doing the same before I buy.

Holy crap, i buy from them all the time. Does sound like something they could do, but thats just pure stupidity if they thought a bloody CD-Key is in a readme file.

The game box was completely sealed when you bought it right? I'm guessing it was if it was a PC game seeing that they don't seel preowned games in Game. That said, I haven't bought a PC game in an age so am really a bit out of the loop when it comes to all this CD key and verification malarky...

This is why I play Xbox360 :]
They do the exact same thing for every system. It's not like people are more inclined to steal a PC game than a 360 game from the store.
