I can now play gamecube games on my PC. What old underrated game should I play first?

And a Gamecube essential. That makes at least three of us recommending Tales of Symphonia.
Make that four. I recommended it in my previous post on page 1. :D

I just wanted to show up and add Baten Kaitos and Custom Robo to the recommendations list because they are awesome games that slipped my mind earlier.

Windwaker, Mario Sunshine, and Resident Evil 4 are underrated? News to me.

What I would really suggest is one of my favourite games of all time, yet one that isn't all that known about. It's Peter Jackson's King Kong, the video game. When it first came out I played it and automatically loved it. Going on a 1950's adventure to a lost, unknown, forsaken island frozen in time where everything around you is trying to kill you. AND THE V-REXS. Too many games now a days make the player some uber-badass that nothing can stop. What I like about King Kong is that it has the guts to throw in an enemy that the player is helpless against. An enemy which chases the player around every corner, yet the player can never overcome.

Off the top of my head:

Luigi's Mansion
Super Monkey Ball (1 and/or 2)
The ports of Sonic Adventure 1 and/or 2
Sonic Heroes(this one's a bit of a hit or miss)
Simpsons Hit & Run
Crazy Taxi
Burnout 2: Point of Impact

Just needed to second Timesplitters, Metal Arms, and Tales of Symphonia. Not all exclusives, but all really good.

I can't believe I forgot Custom Robo! I loved that game so much! It was amazing! It was a blast to play and legitimately funny! It's definitely one of my favorites of all time!

I really wish they would make a sequel. I know they had that DS Custom Robo, but it wasn't set in the same universe and I don't feel that the characters were as solid, and it certainly wasn't as funny. The gameplay was somewhat improved though.

That would be a good game for the Wii U now that I think of it.

Cubivore: Survival of the Fittest

It's one of those 'odd ball' games.
While it's not ground breaking, it's just FUN.

I played Custom Robo for hours on end. xD I never did bother with the DS game, though. I liken it to Okamiden. Not a very good follow-up.

I played it and I thought the DS version was okay. It certainly wasn't as good as the Gamecube version, but it wasn't too bad on it's own merits.

I spent so much time playing the Gamecube version too. I loved that game so much. I still do in fact. I really need to play it again one of these days.

Custom Robo was great, you should definitely give it a try. Also Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, because those were awesome.

I like Custom Robo Arena quite a bit; it was what got me interested in Custom Robo. Though I agree that CR was better in story, graphics, and characters, I prefer CRA's gameplay and aesthetics. Really wish they'd remake one of them for the 3DS, or make a sequel.

Don't play Tales of Symphonia. If I can't play it, you can't either! Seriously, I had planned to geek that game for the entire duration of last summer. Then one of my friends begs and pleads to borrow it, so I let him have it. Yes, I am that benevolent.

He said that he hated it and I still haven't gotten it back. All the rage!

Anyways, aside from the usual Nintendo titles, I'd recommend the Viewtiful Joe games. I had a lot of fun with them.

I would love to see Custom Robo remade for the 3DS. You know what I'd really love to see on the 3DS? Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. I would be a happy man.

I can't recommend Viewtiful Joe enough. I love that game to death. If you grew up around Power Rangers, like side scrolling beat-em-ups with decent challenge and clever powers, or just plain like the idea of a nerd jumping into his old favorite movie and putting his own super stylish twist on everything he encounters...

I may like this game too much.

Emulation isn't illegal. 100% truth. Any unofficial distribution and download of a game (that isn't freeware) is... even if it's an emulator-ready image of that game.
I'm glad that you feel that way. That was the exact point of my post.

I've just seen some threads on the escapist where people who talked about emulation were blamed of being pirates.

Edit: I don't know how I got blamed of "admitting to piracy" for that post. But that definitely, definitely didn't happen. Honestly I don't see how that was seen by anyone as "admitting to piracy". Saying why a form of piracy is common is not the same as admitting to that or even condoning it.
I wouldn't be a PC gamer if it weren't for emulation.
This equals admitting to piracy? I certainly hope not. Nobody else here has been warned for admitting to emulation. So I'm just hoping this is a misunderstanding that Escapist mods don't think that admitting to emulation is equal to admitting to piracy.

I probably shouldn't be talking about getting warns in a thread. But something about this worries me. I'd recommend being careful about this subject even if you aren't saying anything against the rules. It sounds like some moderators may be very sensitive about this topic.

The OP was making the point that those aren't underrated, but wants suggestions for games to play besides ones that come so obviously recommended. And speaking of which, I love you forever for bringing up King Kong, which is my favorite movie tie-in game of all time (including even Spider-Man 2) for its overall presentation and tense, immersive survival-action gameplay. Be on the lookout for a thread by me concerning it within the next day or two, thanks to you helpfully jump-starting my memory.

As for my own suggestions, Ultimate Spider-Man provides a similar experience to Spider-Man 2 (which is also on the Gamecube, if it counts as underrated) and a very comic book-like visual style, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee probably does a better job of putting the player into the shoes of a giant monster than any other game and is an enjoyable fighting game in its own right, the first two Lego Star Wars games are always good for anything from relaxation to comedy to involved secret-hunting, I've spent more time messing around in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland than I can count, the Resident Evil remake breeds a wonderful sense of constant apprehension and is easily one of the best-presented games on the system, the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King adaption is an extremely good hack-and-slasher with a whole lot of replayability thanks to its varied characters and surprisingly rewarding progression system, and The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, despite thoroughly squandering the story opportunities offered by its premise (especially after the first three or four levels), is immensely satisfying thanks to its Final Fantasy X-esque combat system and so-fun-it-needs-to-be-its-own-campaign Evil Mode.

Man, this thread really reminds me of how much I miss the Gamecube...

Also, how does one even manage to play Gamecube games on their PC? do they modify the disk drive or get a particular one? And how does one make the controller usb compatible? Are there ones that just already have a USB port? Is there a USB converter?

And I'm aware that for games you can download many of them, but I'm looking to see if there is a way to do it that is much less questionably legal.
Its a dolphin emulator. You make ISOs of your gamecube discs. You cannot use a gamecube pad, but you can blue tooth a Wii controller and plug in the Classic Controller I think.

I just use the 360 controller. I have the wireless adapter.
Well that seems simple enough. What program did you use to make the ISOs?
You can use whatever program will allow you to create images of discs. I don't remember what I used because that was years ago and I have reformatted computers since then. I think Nero would work, Alcohol will work I think, if that is still around. I think there are certain disc drives that will not work with gamecube discs though, so you may want to start googling the subject...
Can you read the disks in standard hardware? Making an ISO is pretty trivial, but you gotta read the data somehow.

Is Tales of Symphonia a sequel to tales of Phantasia? I've always put that on a pretty short list of JRPGs that still stand up to my less patient adult self...

And how well does it handle the whole save point thing, the last time I tried dragging out a JRPG I kept getting screwed because no save points were around.

I nominate Tales of Symphonia. As long as you like/don't mind the JRPG genre, it's a must-play - it's fun, with a strong plot and fun characters, and it doesn't devolve into the major cliches of the genre (it even subverts a lot of them!). And, the cherry on top, it even has real time combat rather than turn-based.
I throw my backing into this. The first couple of hours are deceptive. And the combat system is fun all the way through and good tweakable AI.

Oh to the above, Symphonia is an IMPLIED PREQUEL to Phantasia, the universes share elements but... you'll see or I'll end up spoiling it for you.

It's a great game, wildly hailed as a gamecube classic, just scarcely around anymore.

As for saves, errr should be easy to save often on the world map and in the towns/dungeons. There are save points a plenty and on the world map you can save anywhere.

Argh I hate you I wanna play it now but I can't :|

I cleared an entire save file 100% once... yes even that bloody Uncle Title. I was addicted.

It's actually a prequel to Tales of Phantasia, although the stories are set so far apart (Symphonia takes place at least several thousand years before Phantasia) and the world is so different it's hard to tell most of the time. There are definite connections though in both the story and in certain plot elements that you'll be able to spot if you were a fan of Phantasia though.

Save points are dealt with okay. You can save any time in the overworld, each city has a save point at the inn, and most dungeons have save points at least right before the boss. I suppose if you got caught right in the middle of one of the longer late game dungeons right as you needed to quit you might be pretty screwed, although they usually have a few save points in the middle of the dungeon for convenience.

How the hell did you get it to run at a consistent 30fps?! Some games are even unplayable (Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime) on my rig and I've got a brand new 13" MacBookPro. Any tips?
