Try not following the main quest line. Just explore n' stuff.
And if you couldn't get into this, or Oblivion, or Bioshock, then what games do you normally play? Solitaire? Mario Cart?
I play half-life, L4D, TF2, Psychonauts, Overlord, GTA and others....

IMO, I enjoyed the game, however your not the first person to not like it. I didn't find it that great in the beginning, but then it grew on me later. Also the main storyline part isn't really that great.

Have you tried the mission the "The Power of the Atom". Speak to Mister Burke in Megaton, hes the quest giver. That mission is the best one.
Oops...When he killed the sheriff I shot him in the head 5 times....Don't think he'll be giving me a quest any time soon....
There's the problem... the game is more immersive if you DON'T run around killing everyone. Try again, and don't antagonize the towns (immediately).

I disagree. Burke is a bastard and needs to be shot ASAP.
Yeah but make sure you get the key to either your Megaton House or Tennpenny Tower suite first.

Wow, I would suggest bashing your head against the wall until you find the game enjoyable, because everyone in their right mind loves Fallout 3.

Seriously though, it took me a while to get into the game as well. I think it's when I actually realized how massive the game really was. The northern parts of the Wasteland are nothing like downtown, which is nothing like the suburbs or swamp areas, etc. There's a shit ton of missions and places and things to do in the game, and it only got "immersive" when that finally hit me.

If you don't like it, spend more time on games you do like.

Actually, since I have finished the game, my opinion had changed a lot. The story quests suck. Lots of hand holding, no real challenge. Explore. Walk most places. Talk to everyone you can. Open every door you can. Some of my favorite things in the game was bringing "the package" to Girdershade and seeing how that fit into what was going on there, and also the Republic of Dave.

And then, if you still don't like it, stop playing.
Oh, and steer clear of the Dunwich building, unless you like shitting your pants.

I really don't have any solid complaints outside of little logical things, like if I put on a specific clothes set, the people who wear them should think I am one of them and I should be able to walk by them without them shooting at me.
It works in oblivion, I don't see why it isn't implemented.

The world isn't very immersive, you can't let go when everything seems so artificial as it does in a Bethesda game.

Most chalk it up to unsettling facial animations, but animations all around and the placement of buildings and other such objects, makes the world feel like a game, like the point of fighting is levelling up, the point of entering a building is to either shoot or talk and that for a sandbox, everything has a rather linear path.

I'm going to enter a building, I will now either shoot or talk to someone.
True, you do this in most RPGs, but in Fallout 3, it just seems to stand out more, like you couldn't think of this place and these people living outside of being designed for your character to interact with.

Sometimes a game just isn't your style. If a company would release a game everyone liked, I'd be shocked.

It was fun... for a while... Then the shitty shooter controls got in the way... Now I can't get back into it, and don't particularly want to.

The beauty of Bethesda games is that your experience can differ greatly from the next person. That's also the pitfall, though. If you're not very good at defining the gameplay for yourself, you're probably headed for a bland and impersonal experience.

Start by thinking long and hard about your character. What do you want him/her to be? What type of person, morally? What kind of fighter? How do you want to approach the world? Once you decide on traits that interest you, invest in them - and stick to them. Don't try to build the perfect killing machine. You want to have limitations and weaknesses, otherwise there's no character or challenge.

TLDR version: go melee. It's hilarious.

I bought Fallout 3 last night and have been trying to play it all day...kinda. I just talked to Three Dog and he told me to go put something on the washington monument to find out where my dad is. The game seems good, the fighting is fun, even though a little unbalanced against me(like most FPS's), the characters are alright and I really don't have any solid complaints outside of little logical things, like if I put on a specific clothes set, the people who wear them should think I am one of them and I should be able to walk by them without them shooting at me.

But even though the game seems good, I just can't seem to get into it, the same thing happened with Bioshock and Oblivion, two very good games.

Anyway what I'm wondering is, why do you think I might not be able to, does anyone else suffer from this and does the game get more....Immersive I guess the word would be, later on?
I had the same problem with Oblivion and Fallout 3. This is basically how it happened for me with both of those games. I start playing it, I can't seem to get into it, I quit for a long period of time, I try to get into it again, I get totally absorbed and can't stop playing it for awhile.

So I dunno, maybe you just have to get past the apparent tediousness and complexity you face at first, 'cause once you get the hang of it it's really fun and addicting. That's how it was for me, anyway, and I'm basically just speculating at this point.

EDIT: Also, what the person above me just said, that's very true. If you aren't interested in defining your character and actually roleplaying as him/her, then it's probably not going to be much fun for you. But honestly, that's what I really loved about Fallout 3. In most games, even the RPGs, I just feel like I'm using my character as a tool to slaughter other characters and/or do fetch quests and junk. In Fallout 3 as well as Oblivion I actually was roleplaying. It got to the point where I didn't want to use the far better armor I had because I wanted to use what my character would use.

Mister Burke isn't the sheriff. Your thinking of Lucas Simm's. Mister Burke is in Moriarty's place
yeah I know, I told the Sheriff that he wanted me to blow up the town, so the sheriff went to arrest Burke and Burke shot him in the back, so I exacted justice into his face
You can still do the quest - Simms should have given it to you when you first got to Megaton and you can still disarm the bomb - check your quests tab in the pip-boy to see if it's there.

Yeah, it takes a while to get into. For what it's worth, the main quest is probably the least interesting part of the game, at least until you get to rivet city.
Exploring the wasteland, searching town to town for a new quest, killing radroaches with a baseball bat and running like hell from deathclaws... That's what it's all about my friend.

RPG's are indeed about finding a build that suits you best, or you enjoy most.

I just started playing Fallout 3 myself (God bless Steam sales). I tend to try out a few different character builds before settling on my favourite (one I die least with). Currently on a sneaky character. With my first character, when I was doing Moira's handiwork looking for food and medicine in the supermarket, I noticed I was hiding from most of the Raiders and trying to pick them off one by one, so sneaky seemed the next logical character to try out (looking forward to being able to plant live grenades in peoples pockets).

In terms of the roleplaying aspect, I can't help but be the good guy, which with Fallout 3 I imagine keeps the NPC's alive long enough to give you quests.

See in the beginning when I got the BB Gun I shot my dad in the stomach and he told me to "Quit screwing around!" so I figured that was probably the whole tone of the game and just did the story missions thus far

I couldn't get into it.
Dad died
then I started roaming one time cause I thought it was a good idea, but I just couldn't get past one point because I kept dying. Then I ran out of ammo. Then I was clueless to where exactly you get ammo. I haven't picked it up since.

i couldn't get the whole appeal of Fallout either. VATS is fun for a while, but you have to use it all the time cause the shooting mechanics aren't very good. The story is alright, the sidequests are few, and of those only a few are interesting. The wasteland is not as fun to explore as they might lead you to believe. And it isn't that funny either, like others say. Nor is the culture like the 50s more than an aside, making it a generic post apocalypse.

Oblivion on the other hand seems to have to plenty of side quests, the environment is much more fun to explore, and the combat is more fun.

Personal opinion however, I understand that most people like the game (which admittedly is the only reason I'm giving my side, normally someone else has done it for me and I can lurk more). I'm not saying it's a bad game, I had fun playing through it. I just don't think it's an amazing game, and I think Oblivion is better.
