I don't know much about anime, but Leipzig, Kursk and Vienna 1683 all pop to mind when I hear 'epic battle'.

In terms of games and films, watching the charge of the Rohirrim in the Return of the King was cool, and Total War lends itself to some good clashes.

Can't find a good video anywhere, but Avatar The Last Airbender final battle scene anyone?

That scene was Bad. Freaking. Ass.

The combination of all four elements, embodied in one person, going ape shit on one man? That, combined with the beautiful animation and scenery, led to the most stunning and epic fight scene to exist. Ever.

Erm... well if you define epic in terms of scale then... no I can't top the ridiculousness that is Gurren Lagan but in terms of an intricate battle full of characters you've grown to know and love/hate all written at a pace that does an amazing job of capturing the utter chaos involved then quite frankly nothing tops Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, in particular Toll the Hounds. That guy knows how to write epic climactic battle scenes. Sadly I can't just Youtube it for you all... but nobody minds reading a ten book series just to see if I'm right do they? Please?

In anime I would say any of the dragon ball z fights where is the "final" big baddie.

Other then that though, i would say spike vs vicious would get my vote.
Up anything Cowboy Bebop!
And Boondocks' few fight scenes are amazing too.
In terms of anime... Fist of the North Star? I mean there's fight then there's beat down.
Ga-Rei Zero is good and I guess more realistic in some sense if you consider the supernatural elements. Not a main part of the story but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRweD27QsHk Majority of the fighting are done with swords/tools.
Over the top silly fighting in terms of overall show (similar to Nichijou, ie just random. Just f---ing random)... I'd say Seto no Hanayome.
For DBZ-like men-screaming fighting there's Scyred ._.
There's also anything railgun, kenshin, etc.

And Durarara!! episode 26...although that's not a true fight scene I guess.

If we're talking about games, I like Dante vs Vergil/Nero/anything.

I really liked the ending for Gurren but I don't focus on the fight scenes too much (I mean they were in mechas as a side point...does that count as fighting?). I'd imagine that if you're looking for fight scenes...watch a boxing anime :p.

Got to say the fight that made my jaw hit the floor has to be Kurosaki Ichigo vs Cifer Ulquiorra, infinitely better than Aizen. When death doesn't stop you, and all it takes it the cry of Orihime to make you virtually undefeatable, there isn't much than can compete.

Best video I could find quickly:

What genre are these books? And are they complete or ongoing?

It's epic high fantasy but vastly different from any form of Tolkienesque world. I usually describe it containing world building of the Tolkien scale, the brutal realism and character depth of George R.R Martin and insane badassery of the anime genre. Add in a healthy dose of philosophy and you've got The Malazan Book of The Fallen. In a interview the author said his intention was for the readers to go on the heros' journey when reading the series, instead of the characters. This might sound like pretentious dribble to some, but for me it struck a real chord with how I feel about the series, even though I did not understand completely what he meant.

The main series is completed and clocked in at about 4 millions words. He has two trilogies coming out set in the same world and his co-creator is also writing books that work together with the main series and has 4 of them out by now.

Oh, and I came into this wanting to write exactly what Korenith said, so yeah. Nothing beats Malazan battles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5JHE27Q6U4&feature=related My favorite battle in any anime.

Nothing beats Malazan battles.
Third novel. That final battle scene in it.

Still wows me. Definitely awesome novels.

Do I like anime: Nope
Have I seen that one show?: I have no interest.

Most epic battle? Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. Nuff said.
OK, both of them were quite awesome, but if epicness includes scale, the end of The Peacekeeper Wars is hard to top:
YES, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that show.
